MP’s Scrounging Is Out Of Control: Cap Esther McVey’s Housing Benefit

generation-rentMPs are being handed huge subsidies to rent second homes in London whilst thousands of the capital’s poorest residents are being socially cleansed due to slashed benefits and soaring rents.

Unemployment Minister Esther McVey claimed a whopping £17,227 last year to rent a swanky central London pad whilst invisible Housing Minster Kris Hopkins trousered £18,045.

The total bill for MPs languishing in luxury properties at our expense came to over £5 million says pressure group Generation Rent who compiled the figures.

The maximum Housing Benefit available in London is just over £250 a week for a single person, around £100 a week less than McVey scrounges.  This benefit goes to people in and out of work alike and was capped shortly after the current government weren’t elected.  Soaring rents in London have meant that many new housing benefit claimants are working full time but still cannot afford the eye-watering cost of living in the capital.

Previously ministers, including Iain Duncan Smith, have claimed that there are plenty of properties still available in London to those affected by the cap.  So why can’t McVey live in one of those instead of living on hand outs?

McVey earns far too much already to be eligible for housing benefit and in any case it is not payable for second homes, even if you claim you need them for work.  She can easily afford to pay her own rent and if not then any state support she receives should be capped at the same level she expects everyone else to survive on.  It’s about making the system fair after all, and it might even incentivise McVey to get a real job for once in her miserable life.

She lives in her tax-payer funded London pad with Philip Davies MP, so in theory at least her expenses should be quite low.

  2. I hope you have twitted this to McVey

It’s all about the rich, more they get more they want just plain greed.
Before this lot got in, we back on to a private school. £12.000 a term, they have spent millions on laying sport grounds, they already own every field about us, before this government got in, it was just a normal amount of pupils, it has expanded, takes a lot more pupils, infact this school seems to think they own the whole area, so this government has made the greed of the rich a fantastic life, while the normal folk, either working or on benefits a life of misery, the greed and cruelty on the normal people is no more than a lot of leaches, why do the normal people have to suffer at the hands of these greedy MP’s and the already rich

  4. Sounds like a petition is due to shame scrounger McVey. Some folk just don’t get paid that much. Does her MP boyfriend claim the same?

  5. Landless Peasant

We must end this something-for-nothing culture that allows parasitic MPs to leech off the rest of Society. Hard-Seeking Jobless British Workers are being taken for a ride by these thieving scumbags.

they have absolutely ringfenced themselves against soaring inflation…their policies are intended to keep money pouring into their coffers, and sucked out of ours….this has left millions alone, isolated, fearful in the now, fearful of their future’s, depleted, and desperate, in a struggle to keep/maintain vitals of life…more and more people are fighting a losing battle against soaring inflation….

  7. They're all at it.

Esther McVey is a dirty scrounging little cunt.

This isn’t a surprise to most of us but we do need to get it into the press and while we are at it lets email this to everybody and everyone who might be interested.. or even not interested!

    • Alistair Darling and his doomed “Better Together lol ” “campaign” sinks to a new low. The result of the Scottish Independence referendum WILL NOT be decided on the state of Nicola Sturgeon’s teeth.

Note to viewers south of the border: Nicola Sturgeon is a victim of the crap Scottish dental system which attacks children teeth with a drill as soon as they can open their mouth. It’s called ‘prophylactic treatment’ whereby perfectly healthy teeth are drilled ‘because the may decay at some time in the future’. Children at primary school are having root canal treatment. It is all to do with £money£ and it is destroying dental health. Of course Nicola Sturgeon has bad teeth but it is hardly her fault.

      • These guys are fucking brilliant when they are out on the streets playing live 🙂 but you will always get some bawbag shouting about the ‘fucking noise’ and threatening to ‘phone the polis’ lol 🙂

      • I tend to agree. I have had bare minimum of dental treatment and have pretty good teeth. They do look for problems where they don’t exist. I never go for check ups as they use that to make work for themselves.

  13. If you look carefully at the data from IPSA you will see that Ester Mcvey and her partner, Philip Davies, claim (and are paid) £1625.00 per month EACH – Total £3250.00 per month – for their London flat. Whats the maximum housing benefit for a couple?

    • Another Fine Mess

Searching for both names at the same time I can only see 1 month where they’ve both claimed Accommodation Rent, the site’s too confusing.

      EstherMcVey Accommodation Rent 01/04/2013 £1,540.00
Philip Davies Accommodation Rent 24/04/2013 £1,625.00

      • Agree the ipsa site is fiddly! But it definately shows them both claiming – Mcveys claim detail states her claim is for half the rent. Also interesting to look at her train travel claims – shes not keen on mixing with the plebs!

  14. Sid, £3250.00 per month claimed by Esther McVey and her partner Philip Davies sharing a property in London? Surely, that is not allowed? Is the rent that much money per month?

    • I think it must be that much – Mcveys claim states that it is for half the rent. I have no idea of London rents (thats why I was asking what the max housing benefit was). Where I live you can get somewhere very nice for a couple for 400 a month.

      • It is about time mc vey and the rest of them were only allowed the same amount for housing as those on benefits, infact they earn enough to pay their own housing as the working class have to do if they work away.

  17. DWP lied to the Scottish Parliament and the UK Parliament – the DWP and jobcentre plus are totally discredited.

    15. This is why there can never be a target for sanctions, and why the Coalition Government abandoned the practice of benchmarking in 2011. That there are targets is a commonly levelled charge, which was investigated and published in a report Conditionality and sanctions a report to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. And the recent Select Committee enquiry into Jobcentre Plus concluded targets did not exist. – DWP evidence to the Scottish Welfare Committee.

  18. A review of the benefits sanctions regime has been called for by a group of MSPs in another critical report of the welfare system.

Sanctions brought in by the UK government mean benefits can be withdrawn for reasons such as leaving a job or not attending an interview.

The Welfare Reform Committee at Holyrood has recommended a number of changes to how the regime operates.

Convenor Michael McMahon described the current welfare system as “broken”.

He said: “When Neil Couling from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) came to committee and said people welcomed the jolt of being sanctioned, the committee was shocked.

“Our evidence says quite the opposite; being sanctioned leaves people with not enough money to make ends meet, certainly not enough to go out job hunting.

“The system is so broken that many people do not know why they have been sanctioned, which totally undermines the DWP assertion that sanctions ‘teach’ people a lesson.”

He added: “How many of us could manage if we did not get paid one week, without any notice or, often, explanation? This demonstrates once again the enormous gulf between reality and DWP thinking.”

The committee said sanctions should only be used as a last resort for those who have consistently and deliberately refused to engage with job seeking requirements without good reason.

It suggested people should receive a written warning at the first breach before it is escalated to a sanction, to act as a deterrent and not a punishment.

People should also have at least 10 working days’ notice prior to a sanction being applied and be told of the reason for the sanction, while sanctions should be applied appropriately and consistently and with greater levels of discretion and support, the committee recommended.

Conservative committee member Alex Johnstone dissented from the report’s findings.

    ‘Safety net’

A spokeswoman for the DWP said: “Sanctions are only used as a last resort, but it’s only right that people claiming benefits should do everything they can to find work, if they are able.

“We make it clear to people at the start of their claim what the rules are and that they risk losing their benefits if they don’t play by them.

She added: “People who are in genuine need can apply for hardship payments. If someone disagrees with a decision made on their claim, they can appeal.”

Scotland’s Welfare Minister Margaret Burgess said: “Our analysis, published last December, also found that the regime is hitting the most disadvantaged groups in society, such as disabled people and lone parents, the hardest.

“This report clearly shows that the current sanctions regime isn’t working. We need to start again with a more positive and proportionate approach designed to support people, not cut off their incomes.”

Welfare sanctions system ‘broken’ says MSP report

    • Benefit Sanctions are State Terrorism

“The committee said sanctions should only be used as a last resort for those who have consistently and deliberately refused to engage with job seeking requirements without good reason.” – this is not too dissimilar to the Citizens’ Advice Bureau’s position. Perhaps the the Committee should try and “engage” with the ever-changing, increasingly impossible to meet Dystopian “job-seeking requirements” that jobseekers face. We must also remember that when sanctions were first introduced by the Blair government they were to be used only as a “last resort”; look where we are now!

Benefit Sanctions are State Terrorism and Must be Stopped WITHOUT EXCEPTION

    • “Sanctions are only used as a first resort”.
Incredible that this can be & is what’s happening.

The first time an ‘adviser’ asked whether I would like a sanction or that I might prefer to give any reaons in mitigation, they very simply said a stoppage “could” be applied. Their introducing this possibility was studiously matter-of-fact and carefully neutral tone – it was said almost as an aside. As if they presumed that – as a newish signer-on, i should be a) aware of and fully expecting the possibility or the likelihood of all income being withdrawn at a moment’s (or no) notice, for an unspecified time, and also, b) they were completely relaxed about the procedure/process being as a routine/regular part of their JCP (sanctioneer’s) role.

The obvious questions seemed to be – exactly – how was someone – anyone – under a sanction expected/thought to be going to survive/manage not being paid the full amount of JSA – for an indeterminate period of time – when at the same time not knowing until the money was due whether or not it would not arrive? Given that a person is signing on in the first place, by definition they are unlikely to have recourse to ‘independent means’. It seems worth knowing how much of the total 2weekly amount “may not be” expected to arrive (innocent times); for how long a period of time “might” JSA not be paid (adviser not having attempted to explain such trivial details – and having instead given only the vaguest, but still extremely disturbing & surreal, hints that, “this may – or then again, may not, be going to happen”).

Questions about a potential sanction don’t not merit a straight answer; nothing within JCP- walls is a foregone conclusion or is part of a logical or predictable/consistent pattern – other than that a sanction is likely to be applied, or attempts made, at some point(s) – or the adviser will die trying. Likely reactions to requests for more detailed explanations are mildly surprised looks implying, “why are you questioning this? What is your probem?” alongside raised eyebrows and a swift, unarguable-with stepping-aside from the process (“A decision maker will decide – not me – I just process the information. I have no choice …”). Any attempt to say that this would never happen anywhere else – eg. in paid employment where wages wouldn’t be unpaid without notice for minor (real or imagined) infringements of the rules only meets with almost-amused seeming looks (of course, they are amused) – it’s so ‘hilarious’.

Two years on from that first rude introduction to the concept of starving innocent people and potentially making them lose their home/sanity, the effects of the sanction threat being levelled haven’t & probably never will go away. Describe the system as “broken” seems to understate the case. Maybe “repellant”; “inhuman”; “barbaric” – but certainly it’s up and running & seemingly working full speed ahead.

      • Not starving “innocent” people – starving people in general (it’s ridiculous to make a distinction) – supposed to refer to the inherent injustice that it’s been deemed ok to do this to people for no good reason – as there can be no good reason … @pre-watercannon.

Have we allowed this to be done to anyone who not able to sustain regular signing-on or able to provide an address for some time now, meanwhile? (those people living in the town/city centres who clearly do not have access to enough food). We already accept this without going into individual people’s circumstances so if there’s an (exponential) increase in the numbers, is that the perfect cover for the JCP/DWP/IDS …

    • No sanctions are ever acceptable. Most of the time that people ‘refuse’ to go along with the system is becasue the system is trying it’s level best to force them into unsuitable work that pays abysmally – no one should be forced into a situation like that. Work should pay, and pay enough to cover a person’s living requirements, and also enough to pay for some of the nicer things in life, such as a decent social life, and the odd holiday. Our society is a wealthy society that could easily afford all that, and a lot more besides, if it were not for the fat cat capitalists and the hangers on of the aristiocracy and royal family.
Much of this perceived problem would just go away if a basic Citizen’s Income were introduced that entitled everyone to enough for a basic lifestyle that wasn’t taken away upon gaining employment – it could happen, but unless we insist it’s likely to be argued down, not becuase it’s ‘unaffordable’ (though intuitively that is the first reaction) but becuase it would empower people too much and force employers to pay a decent wage if they wanted to get workers.

        Dear R S Van Spall,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received on 29 April 2014.
        You asked:

Can you please supply data relating to ‘Hardship payments’ following JCP sanctions,
since the introduction of ‘Hardship payments’

Please include amount of applications, cost of payments and any other relevant data.

We are writing to advise you that the time limit for responding to your request for information
which was received on 29 April 2014 needs to be extended.

It is occasionally necessary to extend the 20 working day time limit for issuing a response. In
the case of your request, we need to extend the time limit because the information requested
must be considered under one of the exemptions to which the public interest test applies. This
extra time is needed in order to make a determination as to the public interest.

Accordingly, we hope to let you have a response by 26 June 2014.

If you have any queries about this letter please contact us quoting the reference number
