Bin British Gas: Put Power in Public Hands! Take Action On May 12th

british-gas-protestA mass demonstration outside the annual AGM of British Gas has been called by Fuel Poverty Action Group on May 12th. Whilst many people are unable to properly heat their homes, British Gas made £571m in profit  last year.

Just staying alive in the UK is becoming ever more expensive as rents, fuel and food prices soar.  A low paid job now barely covers even the most basics needed for survival, whilst the safety net of the benefits system is being ripped away.  None of this is necessary or unavoidable.  Tesco workers get shit wages, whilst we pay extortionate prices for food, so that share holders and directors can make huge profits.  Pensioners are freezing in their homes so that energy company bosses can enjoy lavish lifestyles.

Virtually every last scrap of cash that passes through our hands ends up lining the pockets of the same rich who smear us as scroungers if we need benefits to survive, even if we manage to find a job.  Most of the time we spend working is not to earn ourselves what we need but to increase the huge profits made by those at the top – money we never see.  And they use that money to buy houses and flats that they rent back to us at eye-watering prices.  Then the greedy cunts complain if they have to pay some tax on the money they’ve fleeced.  Yet every single penny spent by the government is to maintain the system that keeps them rich, and us poor.

It’s time to make them feel uncomfortable for a change by confronting them wherever they gather.  The British Gas AGM is as good a place as any to start.  Join Fuel Poverty Action Group and others from 1pm on May 12th outside the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Broad Sanctuary, London, SW1P 3EE.

  1. Disturbing fact-based thriller which explores the extreme things people will do under the control of an authority figure. With scenes of humiliation and coercion that may offend.

  2. I’ve always felt that if Nu Labour actually committed themselves to re-nationalisation as a genuine manifesto promise it would prove to be a considerable vote winner. They won’t of course, it would countermand the dictats of their corporate overlords, but it’s nice to dream all the same.

21st century politics is little more than an elaborate system of bribes. Corporate lobbyists shower our so-called ‘representatives’ with power, wealth and lucrative private sector commissions in return for implementation of laws, policies and economic decisions that directly benefit these corporations; the considerations. The needs of the general public (who are regarded simply as slaves) are of little relevance. Renationalisation would not be of benefit to the corporate forces who control our planet, and thus will never be considered (unless of course, we force the issue.)

The thing is, the general public are not quite as right wing as the bottom feeders of the media like to pretend. The likes of The Sun would love to paint the average British citizen as a rancid foaming, racist bigot, jacked up with national pride and brimming with right wing rhetoric. The truth is more accurately reflected in actual survey data, which consistantly reveals a very different position on the likes of drug legalisation, re-nationalisation of industry, police surveillance etc. etc. etc.

In short, we’re not quite as stupid as they’d like to believe.

  4. For the record, I work for Tesco but I don’t consider my wages “shit”. I think of them as “piss-poor and meagre”. I also think I am managed by a rancid shower of fucking cunts.

    Thank you.

    • You’re welcome. Sounds a bit like the managers in my last job, though I would have called them a shower of rancid fucking cunts. Still, each to her/his own.

Cameron Speaks of Christian Faith as Day Ends With Hymn
By Robert Hutton Apr 10, 2014 9:15 AM GMT (Bloomberg)
Prime Minister David Cameron has held an annual Easter reception in Downing Street since taking office.
Prime Minister David Cameron, whose day began with the resignation of Culture Secretary Maria Miller, finished it with his eyes shut, leaning against a pillar in his London residence as a soprano sang for his Easter reception. He had no comment on her choice of hymn: “Ave Maria.”
“The Bible tells us to bear one another’s burdens,” Cameron told his audience of Christian leaders and politicians at 10 Downing Street when she’d finished. “After the day I’ve had, I’m definitely looking for volunteers.”
Miller’s resignation over an expenses claim, after nearly a week of pressure from the media, the opposition and members of Cameron’s own Conservative Party, dominated the political day and the premier’s weekly question-and-answer session in Parliament. The affair has been an unwelcome distraction as the Tories campaign for local and European Parliament elections next month.
In his remarks at the reception, the prime minister made no reference to the issue that’s hurt his relationship with the Church of England over the past two years, the introduction of gay marriage — a policy overseen by Miller.
Instead, he thanked churches for their work in society, including the growth of food banks to help the poor, and urged them to speak up for persecuted Christians around the world.
Referring at one point to Jesus Christ as “our savior,” he also went further than any recent prime minister in talking about his Christian faith publicly.
    Thursday Morning
Cameron said his “moments of greatest peace” come “perhaps every other Thursday morning” when he slips into the sung Eucharist at St. Mary Abbots, the church in Kensington, west London, linked to the school his children attend. “I find a little bit of peace and hopefully a bit of guidance.”
U.K. prime ministers are usually reluctant to speak publicly about faith, which is treated as a private matter in British politics. Tony Blair, who after leaving office was received into the Roman Catholic church and set up a Faith Foundation, was told not to talk about his beliefs by advisers. When Vanity Fair magazine asked him about it in a 2003 interview, Blair’s press chief Alastair Campbellinterrupted. “We don’t do God,” he was reported to have said.
    Easter Reception
Cameron has held an annual Easter reception in Downing Street since taking office. He has also been comfortable with Biblical allusions. In a 2009 set-piece speech in opposition he borrowed the structure of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
While his predecessor Gordon Brown often referred to lessons he’d learned from his father, a Church of Scotland minister, he steered clear of speaking about personal faith. When he did make a Biblical reference, in a speech to a church in 2010, he cited the wrong book of the Bible.
Cameron yesterday paid tribute to the pastoral work of churches, referring to the 2009 death of his oldest child, Ivan, who would have been 12 two days ago.
He named as “the person who looked after me” Mark Abrey, the vicar of the local church in his electoral district. “I can’t think of anyone who was more loving or thoughtful or kind,” Cameron said.
The prime minister praised the social work of churches, referring to his “Big Society” policy of encouraging volunteering.
“Jesus invented the Big Society 2,000 years ago; I just want to see more of it,” he said. “If there are things that are stopping you from doing more, think of me as a giant Dyno-Rod” to clear the drains.
    Persecuted Religion
He committed his government to fighting persecution of Christians abroad.
“It is the case that Christians are now the most persecuted religion around the world,” Cameron said. “We should stand up against persecution of Christians and other faith groups wherever and whenever we can.”
Following his clashes in the House of Commons today with opposition Labour Party leader Ed Miliband over Miller, the premier said his younger son, Elwen, had learned about the weekly prime minister’s questions from a recent BBC Television “Newsround” special. “He said ‘That’s when you shout at each other and call each other idiots and muppets. I watched and I was very proud.’”

    • If there ever had been a real person called Jesus Christ, with the powers alluded to him, and he were somehow able to see the people who had hijacked his name and message… he’d probably top himself out of shame for the entire human race.

I thought that was what he did do, rather than succumb to the temptations put before him.

  7. Electricity is the most expensive form of power and is the one that needs to be curtailed.

  8. All Tory scum,IDS especially, needs systematically ‘curtailling’ in Viridor municipal-waste incinerators.

  9. Off topic but had to include this that i just read. Pathetic doesn’t describe these types.

  10. I hate the imbalance we are seeing these days. There was always rich folk but it has gone to the extreme now and like Johnny says we are being screwed over big time by the insatiable rich. I feel engineers, technologists and scientists are partly to blame as these people empower the rich machine. Engineers and scientists make these people rich and they really have the power to hold back where they can see what the result of their work will be. These are the brains that the rich need to keep their snouts in the trough. They need to think of the consequences of what they do. Look at self-serve checkouts as an example. This is exploited by the greedy shareholders to make more profit however this has been invented/develpoed by the engineers/technologists/scientists. These people can steer the future. If they want a shit society keep on empowering the rich or think of the consequences. They push for more of these people merely for supply and demand purposes. The more there are the less wages they can pay them so the plan is to screw everyone not just the workless, sick and low paid. Think about it!

  11. overburdenddonkey

sort of very connected, to the loss of our energy industry, the exploiters, dominators, and interrogators, of this world have no joy, no person who rips the hearts out of others for profit/fun, can have joy…sure they can gleefully gloat at the others that they crush…colliery bands were an expression of a culture, miners artist communities, like the one at ashington colliery, were a proud expression of human endurance against incredible suffering and odds…then one hears of struggling workers once again, being replaced by non-paid staff at an art center, but in doing that the art has also abandoned the place…we paid a heavy price for the destruction of our nationalized industries…we are still paying a very heavy price for it…dying from cold in the uk is very popular….

  12. I grew up in a mining area OBD and I saw first hand the destruction of ordinary people’s lives. The irony is my family were actually engineers (mining) but times were or seemed so different then. Communities existed people had their own futures but now ruins. As far as I can see this has all stemmed from Thatcher and her no such thing as society attitude. Moron (not you her!)

  13. British Gas – these companies are quasi-nationalised with the protection they are given by government to fleece the people.

  14. Reblogged this on Beastrabban’s Weblog.

  15. just watching panorama and i have a question, will they lay on buses so that we can still get in and clean up after the shitbags?the will have to in the end.

  16. Berni, do not believe in the media hype.
They are all on the take. The BBC is a great example.
Their brief, is to feed proper gander to the masses to try and prevent mass up risings whilst appearing to be neutral .
In return they will be given moneys.
And we are prepared to jail people who can not afford to pay the license.
Paxton, you are being paid an absolute fortune on the back of poor people.

    Comments welcome. Only from Paxton.

  17. Fracking makes sense to stop the dependency on Arab oil (which has been blamed for the Iraq war) while man made climate change is a load of bollocks (if the weather is good then it’s “global warming”, if it’s bad it’s “climate change”)

  18. Another Fine Mess

I watched Panorama on the Social Cleansing of Londinium.
They followed about 7 victims, there was still lots of confusion whether getting a job and its hours meant you’re still capped or not.

  19. Has Chewies comments been blocked on this site too?

  20. My mum’s just got a letter from British Gas saying that she get’s £40 off her next bill.

  21. If protesting an AGM is the aim why not scrape together a few quid, buty some shares and get some people inside asking awkward questions? Protesting and being disruptive will lead to ejection, but JAQing-off will work for quite a while.

Or go the other way and get someone inside acting like an utter fascist. Rich and poor are relative, people know that, but the rich skirt around how by making people poor they can concentrate wealth into the hands of the few. In the AGM overt questions about screwing over the desperate could be brought up, whilst secretly filming responses to see what the business is really like.

The powerful and right allow the left to make fools of themselves and as such undermine their own social aims, we need to take a leaf from their book and help them hoist themselves by their own petard.

  22. The void top blogg!

  23. British Gas along with all the utilities is the only problem. Government imposed about half the price with Green Taxes that contribute to 30,000 elderly people dying not from old age or illness, but fuel poverty. I can confirm what so many know – that a home with no central heating is actually colder than outdoors.

The loss of state pension payout also contributes to fuel poverty by half of women aged 60-66 that are within the working poor and majority reason that age group are unemployed being disabled / chronic sick and benefits being lost to both groups.
See if you lose most or all of your state pension:
    https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/state-pension-at-60-now

Also a new party has begun that offers hope by bringing them into government in 2015 general election – Left Unity Party – http://leftunity.org/about/
Left Unity would nationalise all utilities into public ownership. Something even Tory voters now want.
So joining Left Unity Party is the best way to get affordable energy bills for the working poor and low income pensioners that are 97 per cent of the benefit bill. Minimum wage is far below a living wage. State Pension is far below the minimum set by Social Charter and should be more like £138 per week than the £100 odd today. Many of the poorest have lost state pension altogether for life, so will have nil income in old age.

    • Germaine Greer

What about men being entitled to a state pension at 60 as well as women? Just an idea 🙂 After all, what’s sauce for the goose…

      • It was a man that took this grievance to the court of European rights as he wanted to retire at 60 or so he said and I recall at the time saying that he is a plant and I bet they are going to raise women’s pension age in order to satisfy greedy governments rather than resentful men, and I was spot on, my friend was amazed.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,
Could you please tell me if BILL GUNNYEON, Chief medical advisor to
the DWP and also a Medical Director of Capita Healthcare, has
    registered a “conflict of interest”.
How many times did Bill Gunnyeon meet with Gordon Waddell and
Mansel Aylward prior to the ATOS contract to undertake ESA
    examinations on behalf of DWP?
Furthermore, will Bill Gunnyeon be receiving any form of
remuneration or reward, given that attractive contracts have been
allocated to both, Capita and ATOS.

    Yours faithfully,
