This is a film made in 2011 by two young people documenting how Iain Duncan Smith’s welfare reforms were likely to impact on the community of Merthyr Tydfil. The latte slurpers behind Benefits Street should take note. This is really what austerity looks like, and it’s got much worse since then.

People I’d tried sympathising with in part one went all racist in part two, and started bullying the immigrants (who had problems of their own: slavery, shitty houses, overcrowding, shitty jobs, no cooking facilities/electricity/gas, evil psycho gangsters looking for them and trying to kill them – they didn’t need to be the target of racist abuse the moment they arrived.) till they left.

Sadly people are all to ready to believe in the bad about people with NO requirement for the truth of anything, rumour is often enough, the law says innocent before guilty yet the public say if accused there must have been “something” wrong with them and even an aquital by jury often cannot change that view. it is this very fact that modern politicians use to THEIR advantage.

I dont believe it should be taken off of air either – It is not degrading benefit claimants whatsoever.
However I do believe Channel 4 should do another program of other benefit claimants (A week in the life of) following the claimants attempts to seek work – hidden cameras in JCP to see how JCP staff really are towards us.
If they followed me, they would see how tough it is, how hard I try, how many jobs I apply for, how useless the JCP are when I ask questions etc.
Benefits Street is pretty much entertainment in the eyes of many but, what is needed is hard hitting reality of what is the majority of us are within.

It happened on a facebook rant. She claimed her account had either been hacked or her 14 year old son must have said it.

Kudos to the Void for finding this excellent video, where the real unemployed are allowed to present their side of the story, and the employers themselves acknowledge the problems that someone from Merthyr Tydfil would find trying to get work in Cardiff. I remember very well that particular quote from Ian Duncan Smith, in which he blithely declared that you could get on a bus and within an hour be in Cardiff. Mike over at Vox Political, told me that it really does show Smith’s stunning ignorance of what it’s actually like in that part of Wales, as the bus company was closing services from Merthyr to Cardiff. Although the film is particularly concerned with Merthyr Tydfil, many of the problems it identifies are universal throughout Britain. They’d apply to any rural area or small town up and down the country where there’s large scale unemployment, and the people have to try to look for work further afield. And unemployed people, who are unable to work because of disability, like Jeff in the film, who suffers from MS will be hit even harder when the Coalition finally privatises the NHS. The drugs we tend to take for granted on the NHS can sometimes be extremely expensive. The result of this will be that a large portion of the sick unemployed will simply be no longer able to afford their medication.

Our local remaining buses (most have been cut) just abolished the weekly bus pass. Now you can get daily bus passes only. If you worked 5 days a week, it’s £12 a day so £60 for 5 days. On minimum wage after deductions like NI, taxes, pension etc, after taking out £60 for a week of travel, that leaves you with less money than the dole. You are worse off because your housing benefit would probably be stopped for working. If your landlord found you worked, they could be taxed for it, and could evict you or hike up your rent/bills. And you’d be knackered. The new system assumes you don’t use buses at weekends, so it doesn’t let you travel then. You’d be too knackered and skint for weekend shopping, business or leisure. To sort out council/benefits stuff you must travel to the council/jobcentre, but they are only open in the week! You can’t skive off your shitjob to attend, or you’ll be sacked for trying to sort out your benefits, then refused benefits for being sacked. If you don’t skive off to see the council, you’ll likely end up getting evicted. The council and buses only just changed it, but they are about to cut even more buses and are talking about making a bus pass £15 a day/£75 a week. Alternatively, if you’re a fulltime student you can buy a 4-week bus pass for the ‘nominal’ (!) sum of £85!
If your housing benefit stayed and you are doing workfare, not only will you be extremely knackered and demoralised, also you would be using every penny of your dole to get to your workfare. They have not factored in rent, bills, food, clothes, other things you need to live….
Well the title JSA is often termed as “job seekers allowance” this is by implication money that is for finding jobs ONLY and therefore you are paid NOTHING for food, clothes gas or electricity, let alone the mobile phone and broadband access they insist you MUST have.

I saw thid film docu. Its very good ..I think they had some bbc help as it was part of a project that took a bit of time but its quite polished and felt authentic..

Cannot trust government figures on unemployment. this recent bunch have come up with new ways to “drop” people off the list.
Not all those reductions in the figures are due to actual jobs.
They have stolen just enough money off benefit claimants to bribe businesses that have invested abroad, to come back here and reap the rewards that are going to be put their way for doing so.
The 12 billion extra they hope to steal from welfare, is to be used to raise the minimum wage for the lowest paid – pure robbing bastards.
hi people i need some advice i have just made a new claim to JSA and have been given a direction to make a universal jobs account… i have no intention of doing so, as i will not be some fucking sheep mug cunt for IDS, i see it as a sanction machine.. i have just played hell in my local joke center plus shithole full of g4s guards stood around doing fuck all 13 of them!! i have been told to supplie my reason for not signing up to it….now i have seen and read things regarding how flawed it is, but cant for the life of find them, i want to present this evidence to them to back up why i will not sign up to any help would be fantastic,, thank you in advance Liam.

However, for legal reasons, you cannot issue a Jobseeker’s Direction to mandate a claimant to create a profile and public CV unless a DWP IAD service is reasonably available to them should they need to use one – for example, because they do not want to accept cookies and therefore need to have access to a device on which cookies have already been accepted.
53. You also cannot issue a Jobseeker’s Direction to mandate a claimant to give us access to their account – this is their decision not ours.
That’s why the ‘advisers’ *say* that you must make your profile/CV public but the actual direction says different: “register… populate your details… complete your on-line profile”. Crafty 😉

I should have refused to sign up to UJM, now that I know all that info on that link. I sometimes get scam SMS text phone calls claiming I applied for x job vacancy when I know damn well that I never did apply for that x job vacancy as claimed. My phone number is not on my UJM CV profile for privacy reasons and because I am compliant with the DPA and yet somehow the fucktards send me fake phone calls.
They sent me one tonight, the job is in Arizona…. You have to pay to work there though.

just don`t tick the boxes that allow them to follow you – That way they cannot do anything to you and you have in effect complied with JCP demands, but, they have no right to sanction you for `Not doing all you can to seek work`.

When even Angela Merkel, leader of the German Christian Democrats, is now signalling the end of the European welfare state (the social market economy model favoured by many of the northern European countries), things are going to get a helluva lot worse from now on.
As she stated in her recent Financial Times interview, Europe has to spend a lot less on welfare to remain competitive: “If Europe today accounts for just over 7 per cent of the world’s population, produces around 25 per cent of global GDP and has to finance 50 per cent of global social spending, then it’s obvious that it will have to work very hard to maintain its prosperity and way of life.”
And she’s correct: failure to curb social spending will leave the EU at a competitive disadvantage vis-a-vis the rest of the global economy, especially the booming BRIC countries. That’s the way capitalism works – it matters not one jot to the Continent’s ruling classes that the removal of social safety nets will cause untold suffering and misery to Europe’s populations, just as long as their profits and cosy lifestyles are maintained. And you can rest assured Britain’s Tories (encouraged by Frau Merkel’s comments) will be feverishly leading the charge to finally consign the very concept of a welfare state to the dustbin of history.
What really needs discarding into history’s dustbin is capitalism itself, before it finally finishes off humanity with its relentless drive to maximise profits by despoiling and destroying the very ecosystems our species relies on for survival.
The benefit claiming scum featured on Benefits Street and Welsh scroungers should be made to move and to do something, even if it is only licking toilet bowl in public conveniences clean with their tongues. The country ought to get something out of these loathsome sub-humans although it would be better if they simply died out and went extinct for their own and for humanity’s sake.

92. We cannot specify to a JSA claimant how they provide us with records of their jobsearch activity and Universal Jobmatch will not change this – it is not therefore possible to require
JSA claimants to give DWP access to their Universal Jobmatch account.
On the strength of information that has found it’s way into the public domain recently,including poor quality reports, whistleblowers evidence and the DWP distancing its own staff from using ATOS hcp’s opinions, the reports are surely void.
I have therefore, written a letter to Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service and asked that my ESA hearing be thrown out as the evidence used to negate my payments has no integrity whatsover……
Also, i challenged the independence of the courts, stating that as they carry the title, her majesty, and the Queen gave royal assent to the welfare reform acts 2012, there exists a blatant conflict of interest…
furthermore, i accuse the courts of aiding and abetting the DWP to gain pecuniary advantage by deception by allowing esa cases to continue knowing the evidence is flawed.
Recently the government announced that it would seek to find or create a qualification to give to a hcp, that would stand up in law.
This must mean that the hcp, as it stands now, does not have the relevant qualification necessary to assess a claimant.
No medical body recognise the hcp qualification, only the Secretary of State who endorsed the WCA examinations.
I also accuse the courts, in tandem with the DWP, of breaching Equality 2013 Law by non recognition of “Protected Characteristics” afforded to disabled persons, adding they are also in clear breach of Human Rights Article 25.

a principled decision, but they will endeavour to keep one in an unprincipled position….MR (mandatory reconsiderations) and “think might work” does the the same work as the WCA has been/is doing…”oh,goody” say many charities, an incentive for the sick and disabled, to provide all the medical evidence at the outset. which part of sick and disabled do they not understand? all of it seems. we all know that the nhs rushes along at lightning speed, are all too willing to speedily diagnosed people and rush through medical reports marked fao dwp decision maker….cue song, “little rock candy mountain”….then a 12mth + wait for 1st tier tribunal, on assessment rate princely sum £71/wk, to ensure fully resourced luxury life style, so that one can rush around keeping the various admin plates spinning, medical appointments etc etc, coz we wouldn’t like to be accused of contributing to our medical condition so as to make it worse now would we!

What it fails to tell you, is that in order to qualify for the basic rate of ESA, whilst waiting for a hearing, you are expected to trail to the doctors each week to get a fit note / sick note.
Strangely, in freedom of information requests to the DWP, they have said that GP’s are not trained to make an assessment on a persons capability for work, according to legislation. However they are able to provide simple fitness for work advice to aid a patients recovery and help them back to work…..

right sorry to be a nuisance and i thank all for helping me out here but i have not got a jar of glue what i should be printing out off the links offered ?? , I’m new to all this, i only made the claim the other day, worked for years, but had the word sanction mentioned over 6 times at my initial interview after making the telephone claim to jsa had a list of demands shoved under my face!! a lot what i never actually agreed to!! think it’s called a claimant commitment booklet i am due to sign 9am this monday!! so need print outs as to why under no circumstances will i sign up to universal bollocks, as if i do i feel i will be tripped up for futcher possible sanction….thanks again this site is so informative . regards Liam.
Also Liam, your instincts are absolutely right. They will try very hard to argue black is white and put up barriers explaining why there’s only one way you can do your job search/present evidence of it & that is their way.
Forewarned is forearmed but expect their approach to be that you are guilty until proved innocent (of “not doing enough to find work/not really wanting to/not accepting their ‘help”). Even a few years ago things were not the way they now are at JCPs and there’s been so much constant rule-changing that the advisers don’t know whether they’re coming or going – they just know their job is to enforce stringent and ever-increasing conditions and that this will result in them being able to issue a certain number of sanctions — which shows their bosses they are working hard,
It’s stressful (or it can be) but going with as much information as possible (that you know is correct) helps – they don’t always want to hear/accept it easily but try to have a plan and try to stick to what you feel is ‘reasonable’/do-able for you is something you can do.
There is another site (across from here – on the right hand sidebar) ipswich unemployment movement who’ve also just put up some really clear advice – can get straight to it from here, I wish this had been available sooner – it shows really clearly in one page of info how to at least try to minimise the risk of them being able to stop money. As well as the link(s) also mentioned above.
@ Liam – I’m not sure what new claimants must do but they forced me to sign up to Unfunny Joke Machine after I completed the work programme under threat of jobseekers direction if I was slow to do it ie leading to sanction if I did not do it. I don’t log into it when using it to look for jobs though, and only log into it 3 times a week to check if my advisor has “saved” any jobs for me, as agreed post WP. I also log into it for any jobs which I cannot apply for without logging in. In either case I log quickly out afterwards. The new claimant commitment sounds horrific. I haven’t been confronted with it just yet, but I’m aware its only a matter of time. No-one is going to be able to spend 25-30hrs looking for work. I have put my cv as “private” on UJM and I have ticked the option to not receive any of those useless automatic spam e-mails about jobs which it sends out. These are just generated by the system. The “recommended jobs” which it shows on the first screen of your UJM account are also just automatically generated and my advisor said I did not have to apply for these, only any ones which she saved for me.
I have also not allowed access to my account as I believe we have a right to deny them access according to the data protection act, but I don’t have anything to print out – the other posters are able to provide such evidence.
I still provide them with a handwritten account of my jobsearch and my understanding is that they cannot demand otherwise.
I also use a separate e-mail address purely for applying for jobs and for communications in any courses which I do. I put that separate e-mail address on any cvs and job applications.
Applying for jobs on UJM is actually very easy as it doesn’t even ask for a covering letter; you just click apply and then choose your cv – I’ve only got one on there anyway. I don’t think I’ve ever had a reply from any applications I’ve made on there though, but at least I’ve applied, and it shows on my application history on UJM any jobs which I’ve applied for via it (which are only a small percentage of my total job applications).
I don’t use the screen for manually typing in my applications and jobsearches that is on UJM as I don’t like them knowing when I’ve written something down which to me this is the equivalent of, and I’ve never even bothered to find out where that screen is.
Universal Joke Machine was set up as a sanction weapon against us unfortunate jobseekers. Nothing more. I never receive any response from ANY employer I send in applications for, but instead get scam phone calls (SMS text voice messages with an indecipherable phone number to ring and a message then about a so-called job application I have been claimed to make, but in reality I never did.
The tick box on universal fuckup (account access) is there for the website to fully comply with the DPA 1998, otherwise it would be in breach of the said privacy laws and be in effect closed down for illegally obtaining, storing, and sharing of individual user accounts and personal details.
I believe I am correct in saying that written consent (also signed & data by both parties – you and whomever is requesting data) must be obtained in accordance with the DPA 1998 for the gathering, storing, processing and sharing of this information. A piddly little tickbox on a website that allows or denies user account info to a third-party surely cannot fall within the legal obligations of the DPA 1998
If I or anybody else creates a CV, then in the eyes of the law, the person creating the CV is the copyrighted owner of said information and only they can decide whom receives this information. Not some tinpot dictator living in a fantasy world who thinks you are putting barrier to employment simply for protecting your right to privacy against intrusion.
Any JCP gestapo officer requesting or demanding UJM account access under giving the pretence of doing a sanction against you is clearly breaking the DPA 1998 and the ECHR act regarding full rights to privacy and a right to prevent against any or all state intrusion by whatever means.
My own CV only goes to whom I decide gets it, as in the eyes of the DPA 1998 I am legally within my rights to protect its usage against possible mis-use or potential harvesting purposes that could be used against me or later harm my career prospects.
Same goes for my email addresses. If I get asked for my CV, e-mail address or my UJM account by anyone I will now ask them for what purpose do you require my personal information, and can you show me the legislation which you are duly bound to request this information. If they cannot show me or refuse me the legislation for some dumb reason, I won’t show them my personal data.

Well I’m off to the JC again, yet again I will be referred to the DM for not applying for any jobs this week. Not actively seeking they sanction me for, but I am seeking, but they don’t believe it.
But on moral grounds i will not comply. Thankfully I have a roof over my head and i eat. So I can deal with it, just.
The stress is incredible though.
I refused to sign a claimant commitment, because in it they wanted 5 hours a day Mon – Fri jobsearch. 10 jobs applied for and they also put on it about allowing access to my UJ account!!!
I actually do not know why I bother signing on anymore.
If I hadn’t been accepted fopr hardship payments I probably would have, i don’t expect and full rate JSA ever again.
The only time I’ll have any money worth having is IF I can get a job.

I suggest that you ask to see a copy of their own UJM guidelines when you next go to the JCP. If they refuse to give you this information they have something to hide and also are not abiding by their own laws and policies; to me your jcp is acting unto a law to itself and are clearly not following official procedures.
They cannot demand access to your UJM account as it will break the DPA 1998 (section 10 of the DPA springs to mind). The JSA act itself must first have to be amended regarding access to UJM accounts given do DWP goons and that the JSA amendments comply fairly with the DPA.

Your situation is almost beyond belief, but it makes lots of sense too. It reminds me of a conversation quite early on @this time’s being unemployed – the x jobs/week conversation. The question was, “How many jobs do you think you’ll apply for each day?” (Getting back on my chair) the number I gave was as low as seemed likely to be accepted without being either ‘one’ or ‘two’ and they were almost delighted – or at least “did a smile” and said “that’s good”. I didn’t understand why at all, but If I’d realised that there was the possibility of being able to say, “Any that I find that I could realistically go for” and knowing what I now know …. it would have been the ‘best’ (for me) answer.
Not been in anything like the situation you’ve been put in but they’re asking everyone to compromise in whatever ways we feel pressured into compromising & with devastating results for huge numbers of people. What I did say, at the set number/week appointment was that this is not how I’d usually set about looking for a job In The Real World (scattershot, by numbers). Which received just a quizzical look (pitying) & not even a wry smile.
Sometimes, it’s meant applying for jobs not really realistic in moments of panic & (sod’s law) one of them eventually replied which, all by itself underlines the point that it’s dishonest to apply for something that wouldn’t really because of the metaphorical gun (sanction) aimed towards the head area…. they make cheats of (almost) all of us.

My advisor keeps pestering me about allowing access to my ujm. I have been handing in written records of my job search and she is still saying that is no use and I have to see your using ujm. I know I don’t have to give them access and I have mentioned this in here before. She has tried new tactics today she said the next time I have to bring in a print out of my activity inside the ujm site, is this allowed? I’m just sick of all this hassle. I don’t hardly ever login to the site as most jobs are external.
Is this automaton job search thing any use as it only has 200 odd users and could you get caught using it?
@ Cephalus – my understanding is the “evidence” we give in on our jobsearch is “unsubstantiated” ie we shouldn’t need to show printouts. She can see that you are using UJM if you mention the UJM job id on each of the jobs which you either look at without applying for with your given reason or actually apply for. You wouldn’t be able to write down the UJM Job ID if you hadn’t been using UJM would you? She doesn’t need to know exactly what time of the day you used it, which a print-out (which would cost money which most jobseekers don’t have to spare) would show. In a way, a print out is a bit like giving them some access to your UJM account, which we have a right to completely deny them.
Maybe you should ask to speak to a manager and complain about the standard of her “customer service”.
I’ve never used the automaton job search thing, but I don’t really see the point of it.
PS Cephalus – My advisor said to me about a month ago, “You know, you don’t need to use the jobseekers diary to write down your jobsearch”. The minute she said it I thought here it comes, she’s going to recommend I record it on the UJM screen which is for that purpose. I was pleasantly surprised when she said “I can just give you some A4 paper instead”.
I said “No, it’s ok, I’ll just carry on using the Jobseekers diary”.

Bizarre. I have been told off for using paper. When my form filled up last time and I stapled on a full 2-sided A4 piece of paper with the rest of the activities I had done to look for work,……
They said why is there a piece of paper. I said, I ran out of space on your form, and it says I must put down every activity I did to look for work, or be sanctioned. They said you are not allowed to use paper, we told you off for this before. I showed them on the form where it says if you run out of space use another sheet. They tried to sanction me for using paper other than their form, for writing too much, for filling up their form, and for doing too much to look for work.
Fuck ’em. Maybe next time i WILL dig up and shag their deceased grandfathers…. (in case I’m now contractually obliged)

* Each time I have to see my crabby old cow of a so-called JCP advisor she always looks on her computer to see if I have finally given in to her and gave her my UJM account. She still sees each time if access is given from me, even though I showed her the JCP rules as quoted above and she was happy then for me to prevent access
I use the Chrome automation App on my own PC. The JCP cannot do anything about this as I am using a private PC on a private/encrypted home internet access.
If they try to sanction me for bending their own system, I can sue them for illegal access to my home internet connection and illegal remote access directly to my computer and any system or program on it – either browser program/add on or internal PC program or file.
Some useful info I would like to share with everyone on here..
If you think using the jobpoints at your JCP office seems harmless and innocent, think again. The jobpoints are secretly monitored by ALL of the goons working in the same JCP, even if the goons don’t ever sign you, andeven if the goons are working well away from you and cannot see you in line of sight.
Every jcp client using a jobpoint is recorded onto the system and various monitoring information is duly recorded into the client’s file.
*Time and date that client used a jobpoint
* Time duration that client was using a jobpoint
* what jobs were looked at
* what jobs were printed off
* what other location was the client searching for jobs through
The computers replacing the jobpoints should also be treated with suspicion as these could also be remotely tracked and monitored – I cannot yet confirm that the Public access computers have monitoring software on them and eyes behind the desks are both watching P.A.D activities both across the office floor and in front of them on their own computers…
JCP goons are trained not to give away subtle body language/expressions that would otherwise give away the fact they are watching their clients in-jcp job seeking activities.
Another thing is that the goons can send instant messages between each other (like a pop-up), the security goons can also send messages to ‘advisers’ screens!

I must give Universal Credit information that I believe is correct and complete. I understand that if I don’t report any changes that affect my Universal Credit claim as soon as possible, I may be prosecuted or other action may be taken against me. I also understand that I may have to pay a £50 penalty if there is an overpayment of Universal Credit to me and it was my fault.

I studied Foundation Art Prac’ on the same floor (in the next room) as the students and staff responsible for this short documentary which was made in response to ill informed comments made by DWP minister Iain Duncan Smith MP in 2011.
