Poverty Profiteers To Hold Forced Labour Party!

snoutsThe welfare-to-work industry are to splash out yet more tax payers money holding a glitzy award ceremony for workfare exploiters and poverty profiteers like A4e and G4S.

ERSA – the trade body paid to spin the facts on behalf of the welfare-to-work sector – have called for nominations for the awards which will be take place at a special drinks ceremony (sponsored by Specialist Recruitment Partners) where Minister for Unemployment Esther McVey will be present.

Awards will not just go to the tax-payer funded spivs involved in the welfare-to-work racket, but also companies who exploit claimants by forcing them to work without pay.  Last year’s winners were B&M Stores who have long been the target of anti-workfare campaigners.  Let’s make sure whoever wins this year gets what’s coming to them as well.

Appallingly the main sponsors of the event are so-called charity The Shaw Trust, an organisation responsible for sanctioning thousands of benefit claims and forcing unemployed people into homelessness and destitution.

The final awards will be held somewhere in London on 2nd June whilst the closing date for nominations is 14th March.  ERSA will be tweeting throughout the ugly back-slapping knees-up  using the hashtag #ERSAawards2014.  Let’s spoil it for them.

If more proof were ever needed of the staggering incompetence of the welfare-to-work industry, bungling ERSA have recently been re-tweeting the parody twitter account @UKJCP and calling on people to sign the petition to scrap all benefit sanctions without exceptions.

    ERSA Call for Evidence: Government Disability and Health Employment strategy

    Following  the release of the government’s Disability and Health Employment Strategy ERSA has produced a summary of the strategy and is now issuing an official call for evidence to members to inform its response to the Disability and Health Employment Strategy.

    A number of key questions have been identified which ERSA and DWP are keen for members to address. These are set out below. We are looking to formulate our response to government over the upcoming weeks and ask members to make submissions to gemma.hopkins@ersa.org.uk by COP Friday 28 February 2014.

    1. How can we identify the hardest to help? What are the key characteristics we should be looking for?

    to an Atos Healthcare Professional (HCP).

    HCP’s are fully trained in Disability Assessment Medicine. Expertise in this field qualifies the
    HCP to give an impartial, independent assessment on the way in which a claimant’s illness or
    disability affects them in carrying out of a range of everyday work-related activities. Training
    includes the assessment of the effects of specific conditions, for example mental health, or
    where a condition may fluctuate. Emphasis is always placed on the differing circumstances of
    each individual claimant.

    Atos Healthcare HCPs are specifically trained to provide decision making authorities with
    independent, accurate and authoritative advice and reports on the effects of disability.

    Influence the government’s overall disability and employment strategy;
    Ensure that disabled peoples’ needs are effetively catered for on mainstream employment provision such as the Work Programme;
    Ensure Universal Credit successfully interacts with disability employment programmes;
    Share best practice in relation to warm handovers from the Work Capability Assessment to employment programmes; and

    Residential Training Provision
    Note: The purpose of this report is to review Residential Training (RT)

    collectively as Residential Training Colleges).
    In this report, the term Residential Training has been used to encompass a

    The Independent Advisory Panel was set up in August 2012 to review DWP funded

    employment programmes, “Getting in, staying in and getting on” 1 on the way forward
    for the delivery of services provided by Residential Training providers.

    • How government support should evolve to reflect the Sayce recommendations;
    • How to address the issues of transition, sustainability, retention of expertise and
    geographical variations.
    Although the primary focus of the panel’s work has been to review the provision of
    what is often referred to as specialist disability employment training as delivered by
    Residential Training providers, the panel has been mindful of other DWP
    programmes such as Work Choice and Work Programme and note the disappointing
    statistics published recently.
    The panel are keen to see some robust analysis of the outcomes and outputs of the
    Work Programme and Work Choice against the initial expectations and the learning
    accounted for in the forthcoming Disability Employment Strategy

  20. Shaw trust have some nasty characters employed, especially the ones from CDG. Mostly with business private sector backgrounds “helping” there “customers” into sustainable work, using the very vulnerability of there “customer” into signing whatever and questioning nothing. They use coercion on there customers, a sales pitch approach, and confuse them with jargon, verbal aggression and mobbing, some CDG staff are known for this. They actively take part in sanctioning the vulnerable, in whatever nasty way to achieve personal targets. Money is the most important thing to them. They are vile.

      You recently quoted these paragraphs below, in a FOI request I sent you.

      The European Convention of Human Rights does not give an automatic right to receive
      benefit. Where a State does provide benefits, there is no right to a particular amount. The
      Government has set the rate of benefits at an amount that it believes to be reasonable, and to
      ensure that no individual suffers destitution. This is compatible with the Convention .

      Destitution refers to persons who are suffering hardship derived from lack of food, clothing and
      shelter. Does your department deem that destitution is not apparent in the uk, and getting
      worse, day by day, as a result of the Welfare Reform Act?

      How bad must it get before it becomes uncompatible with the European Convention?

      I can confirm that the Department holds no recorded information to answer your questions.

      It may help if I explain that the Freedom of Information Act requires public authorities to
      provide copies of information they already hold in a recorded form, subject to certain
      exemptions. However, it does not require the Department to provide opinions, explanations,
      generate answers to questions, or create or obtain information it does not hold.

  32. I’ve just been told by the DWP that as of the 1st April I’ll be more than likely litter-picking for 30 hours a week for 30 consecutive weeks. Has anyone else been informed of this? I know they announced it in September but presumed it would fall through however that doesn’t appear to be the case…

Osborne’s spiel in September did indeed give the impression it was a choice between daily signing and forced labour and I even asked an advisor a few months back who informed me people already were daily signing in some cases twice a day. Although yes I’d find signing on daily preferable to litter picking but then again it could be like a classroom set-up at the dole whereby you are there all day doing a job search. However the litter picking itself was only directly mentioned by my advisor a few weeks back and at that point it didn’t sound like you had the choice of the two..

    • @ Trapdoor – I honestly don’t think they have the staff or the computer equipment (or even the space!) to deal with keeping everyone who opted for daily signing in the JCP in the Jobcentreminus all day, and certainly not for 30 weeks. They would have to contract it out, and the Work Programme Providers don’t seem so keen to take on the job now that they are to be paid by results instead of attendance.

      Work choice? Like telling a prisoner to ‘choose’ injection, hanging, gas chamber or shooting…. there isn’t a choice called ‘go free and have a normal life’.

      If there was a job for a hangman to execute IDS, I’m sure they’d be inundated with applications. Proving we are most certainly NOT workshy, not when there is useful work to be done. Or a patriotic duty. Or environmental cleansing…. Or public entertainment.

      Don’t those twats know that if they weren’t on our case all the time, we could go out and look for actual real jobs?

      Our JCP has almost no working jobpoints left, 2 crap knackered /UJM computers (1 broken), a maximum of 40 hours open per week – and 4000 fucking jobseekers. And no fucking jobs. And the disability lift just completely broke. So zero working disability lifts.
      Now it doesn’t take a maths genius to tell you that those figures don’t add up. If every jobseeker, around 66% of whom (here) are longterm unemployed and sick/disabled, was forced to be here 35 hours a week… where there’s no fucking toilet, not even just an ablebodied one; hardly any staff, and only Pigface to keep people in line…

      [Pigface is by the way a G4S Security Guard who also works at the Atos Sanctioning Centre, and while working at the JCP has been observed actually issuing sanctions or causing his JCP colleagues to issue sanctions. Although he is a G4S security guard and not a JCP member of staff.]

      If all the above variables were in place, though it’s a largish/medium JCP, there is no way you could fit 400 people in it let alone 4000. If you even let in 40, there is still only one fucked-up, shitty knackered Universal JobBotch computer and no fucking chairs. Half a dozen or less frontline staff, when they can be arsed to turn up, and a few more behind the front line staff.

      While Pigface makes an energetic bid for Cunt of the Year Award, the combination of clueless morons and active sadists among the signing/sanctioning staff, makes for a toxic and hopeless atmosphere. It’s a wonder they don’t take a look at themselves, then go home in self-disgust and shame and drink a bottle of sulphuric acid. Trouble is, a conscience is an automatic bar to this job.

    This is 1 month after cutting staffs hours by 50%
    This means I am earning less than those on workfare (now 10 hours).
