Day 3: Target the companies replacing paid work with workfare

If You Exploit Us We Will Shut You DownFrom Boycott Workfare

Workfare hands companies free labour which means fewer jobs and paid hours for everyone. But direct action and online pressure mean tens of brands now steer clear of it. Let’s step up the pressure on companies who still think they can profit from unpaid work!

Take action today to shame these companies and make them realise that exploiting unemployed people might just mean fewer customers this Christmas. There’s new online action every day this week so please keep checking back!

Marks & Spencer

Marks & Spencer’s use of workfare hit public awareness when they announced 1400 new placements in their stores and a benchmark of 2% of the workforce to be unpaid. But this isn’t the brand’s first encounter with workfare. Despite their CEO earning over £2 million a year, they are also profiting from unpaid work through another workfare scheme in Scotland, which targets single parents. It’s likely their involvement is much more widespread – we also heard from someone sent on a 4 week placement at one of their outlet stores.

Last time we took action, M&S was forced to disable comments on their Facebook Page. Several pickets and walks of shame will pay a visit to their stores this week. Please feel free to contact them with your thoughts as well:

B&M Stores

In May, B&M won an award from the workfare industry for its involvement. But the reality of this involvement is harsh. One person has reported: “B&M stores have started using workfare Jan 2013. Receiving free labour and stopping overtime for employees with contracts. The people forced to do this free labour are not happy and neither are the employees!” Boycott Workfare has had reports of workfare at B&M stores in Bangor, Glasgow, Manchester, Southend and Northern Ireland. Show them they can’t keep cutting their wages bill with unpaid work!

Asda

Asda has been at the heart of workfare in the UK, helping the government relaunch its “Work Experience” scheme last year. We have had reports that one of their stores in Manchester uses disabled people on workfare on the night shift. They are frank about their involvement here.

Week Of Action Against Workfare Begins: Take on the High Street Workfare Exploiters

marks-spencer-workfareThe anti-workfare occupation of Marks & Spencer’s facebook page stayed solid over the weekend and shows no signs of dying down today after Boycott Workfare’s call for online action against high streets shops using unpaid labour.

Joining M&S in the workfare hall of shame are B&M Stores who were recently given a workfare exploiter of the year award by ERSA – the lobbying body whose job it is to lie on behalf of the fraud ridden welfare-to-work industry.

Also on the list are ASDA who are saving themselves money everyday by not paying their staff.  They’ve even been happy to suck up to the DWP and help them relaunch the Work Experience scheme if it means they get lots of free workers.  ASDA are on twitter @ASDA and facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/Asda

Overpriced sandwich shop EAT are also a target after it was revealed they take part in the Sector Based Work Academies scheme – meaning they get free staff for six weeks at a time.  As Boycott Workfare point out: “Their website invites ‘Some real honest feedback’. Please feel free to oblige.”

Finally, and proving you really can’t trust hippies – especially ones who run a supermarket – Whole Foods Market are also known to be involved in the Work Academy scheme.  Stores are represented individually on social networking, Boycott Workfare recommend starting with the Camden and Stoke Newington branches.

For full contact details for all of these companies visit: http://www.boycottworkfare.org/?p=2730

Pickets, info stalls, workfare walks of shame and surprise visits will be taking place all week as part of the Week of Action Against Workfare.  There will be a different online action announced everyday on the Boycott Workfare website.  Tomorrow get ready to take on the annual welfare-to-work conference where the workfare industry will be shoveling vol-au-vents down their necks whilst tweeting on their tax payer funded smart phones using the hashtag #w2w2013

Please help spread the word about all events!

ASDA Are Austerity Profiteers – Boycott Them!

boycott-asdaA call has gone out to boycott supermarket chain ASDA due to their obscene profiteering from the current economic crisis and the increasing poverty faced by many of their customers.

ASDA are not only ones of the UK’s largest workfare exploiters, but have also  just been given a smart-card contract by Birmingham City Council.  This is the replacement for the Crisis Loan scheme, the small loans which were available to claimants and people on a low income in an emergency, such as having been a victim of theft.

These loans – which averaged around £60 per person and had to be repaid – have now been abolished by Iain Duncan Smith.  Instead local authorities are to provide this vital but fast disappearing support.

In Birmingham recipients of short term help will no longer be given cash, but instead a smart card which can only be spent at ASDA.  This is despite the fact many people in receipt of these cards may be unable to afford the fares to their nearest monstrous out of town supermarket.  ASDA could have chosen to stand with their customers – many of whom are on low incomes – and refused to take part in such an offensive scheme which treats those with least like children whilst lining the pocket of supermarket bosses.  Instead the money grabbing leeches in charge of the company are only to happy to force claimants to have no choice but to shop in their supermarkets.

This is hardly surprising.  ASDA are well known for also forcing people to work in their stores without pay.  A post on Boycott Workfare’s website reveals how ASDA took on unpaid workers to deal with the Christmas rush and even forced people to work without pay on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.

In truth ASDA were chomping at the bit of austerity and the opportunities for exploitation it might bring shortly after this Government weren’t elected. In October 2010, Chairman of the company Andy Bond was a signatory to a letter to The Daily Telegraph which claimed that “The private sector should be more than capable of generating additional jobs to replace those lost in the public sector, and the redeployment of people to more productive activities will improve economic performance, so generating more employment opportunities.”

It turns out the company had no intention of paying wages for many of those employment opportunities they claimed might be generated.

Claimants in a crisis may be forced to shop at ASDA but the rest of us don’t have to.  Boycott these money grabbing parasites and spread the word about how they treat their customers.  Follow @BoycottAsda2013 on twitter to keep up with the campaign and tell ASDA what you think on facebook a: http://www.facebook.com/Asda

Asda in corporate lying bastards shock

Pictured above is the ASDA 3-a-day bus at last weekend’s Lambeth Country Fair.    ASDA, alongside those notorious experts in childhood nutrition, Cheestrings and Kraft, have been touring the country telling parents that their children must eat three portions of dairy a day.

An outraged hard-working parent writes:

Shamelessly cashing in on the Government’s five a day fruit and veg dictat ASDA claim that kids must have a portion of yogurt, a piece of cheese and a glass of milk every day to stay strong and healthy

This is a complete and utter fucking lie.  Beside a couple of vitamins easily available elsewhere, milk is a one trick pony.  All it really contains alongside sugar and fat is a bit of Calcium and the benefits of this are unclear.  According to the Guardian:

“A study funded by the US National Dairy Council, for example, gave a group of postmenopausal women three 8oz glasses of skimmed milk a day for two years, then compared their bones with those of a control group of women not given the milk. The dairy group consumed 1,400mg of calcium a day, yet lost bone at twice the rate of the control group.”

It’s been suggested that over-consumption of animal proteins (like milk) makes excessive demands on the kidneys, which in turn leach calcium from the body.  Seen as this is the only real claim to health that milk has this isn’t good news for the Dairy Industry.

If you don’t eat fruit and veg eventually you’ll get scurvy and die.  If you eat too much you’ll probably just fart a lot.  This isn’t the case with dairy, whilst cutting it from a balanced diet completely will not have any health risks, if you eat too much then you’ll become obese and probably die.

Especially if you follow ASDA’ advice.

Health advisers warn that 7-10 year olds should not have more than 16 g of sugar in any one meal.  An  ASDA Organics Low Fat Apple and Blackberry Yogurt (sounds healthy) contains almost 13 grams of sugar per portion.  Alongside the 5g of sugar in a 100ml glass of milk, which ASDA suggest to drink throughout the day, this would push kids over the daily recommended amount.

If you fancied giving the kids a treat then an ASDA Extra Special Yogurt Lemon Curd Yogurt contains 20.9g of sugar.  Even ASDA’s plain Organics range yogurt contains half the mealtime guideline for sugar.

As for the likes of Kraft and Cheestrings plugging their dodgy products on the back of good nutrition, the idea that eating high salt and saturated fat garbage in the hope of sniffing out a bit of calcium amongst the over-produced junk is a big fat porky.

It’s a bit like squeezing an orange over a glass of Special Brew and telling kids it will do ’em good.

Most of the world don’t rely on processed cow’s mucus to feed their kids.  In fact lactose intolerance is as high as 50% in some ethnic groups.  Is ASDA saying that East Asians or Hassidic Jews somehow have unhealthy cultures?

In 1965, investigators at Johns Hopkins found that 15% of all the white people and almost three-quarters of all the black people they tested were unable to digest lactose. Many more people in the world are unable than able to digest lactose including includes most Thais, Japanese, Arabs and Ashkenazi Jews, and 50% of Indians.

Should they be slurping the stuff down anyway to satisfy ASDA’s shareholders?

Nutrition is not an exact science and it seems that we’re told one thing one day and something completely opposite the next.  But what is sure is that Dairy is not an essential part of a healthy diet, and probably is quite the opposite.

For the likes of ASDA (which stands for Associated Dairies in case you didn’t know) to use confusion over nutrition to flog their hormone laced, high fat junk to kids is shameful, irresponsible and quite possibly illegal.
