Unemployment has risen in the last three months but you wouldn’t know that from today’s gushing press release from the Stephen Crabb and the DWP.
There were 21,000 more unemployed people in the latest period and, in further bad news for the government, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits rose by just under 7000. Neither of these key facts are mentioned on the DWP websites and it is only by digging into the Labour Market Release produced by the Office for National Statistics that this information is available.
Previously the DWP has sulkily acknowledged any rise in unemployment whilst pointing out how wonderful everything else is. The truth is that the Labour Market Statistics contain a huge amount of information and normal fluctuations within the figures mean that they can usually be cherry-picked for both good and bad news. Stephen Crabb does just that today by claiming that a small fall in the number of people who are economically inactive is a huge triumph. This by the way is always a sign of desperation. A fall in economic inactivity can mean a massive amount of things, from variations in the number of those who are long term sick to a drop in the number of people taking early retirement. In the latest figures it largely represents a fall in the number of students and of those taking time from work to look after the family home.
Crabb is also celebrating a tiny rise in the total number of people with jobs with the DWP claiming this is driven by those entering full time work. But even this is hugely misleading. Population increases combined with a just about growing economy mean that there are almost always more people in work than ever before. The question is whether the rise in the number of jobs is keeping pace with growth in the working age population. This month that didnt happen. The number of working age people rose by 27,000 in the latest three month period, but the working population grew by just 22,000. And whilst there was an increase in full time work as Crabb claimed, this was only amongst those who are self-employed. The number of people working full time for an employer fell by 34,000.
These figures don’t matter much unless we see them repeated over the coming months. What is critical is the way they were, or in most cases werent announced by the government. Departmental communications are bound by rules intended to ensure both impartiality and objectivity. Yet today’s press release from the DWP was an attempt to deliberately mislead the public about the true state of the UK’s labour market and that’s called lying. Even Iain Duncan Smith didn’t try and pull this sort of shit. Not that often anyway. Stephen Crabb is moving in a dangerous direction. Don’t believe a fucking word he says.

The reason given by Maximus why some people don`t et an ESA50 form is that is special cases people with Mental Health Issues do not fill out a ESA form & go straight to a WCA because people with Mental Health are not able to fill out forms. Maximus policy. Ask the DWP if that`s the DWP policy & they will say No it`s not the DWP policy. So how come it`s the DWP`s contractors policy then.
People with Mental Health will not get a public form because mental health people are not able to fill out forms. Women will not be getting a form because women are not able to fill out forms. Rachel Reeves, the Labour MP and former shadow work and pensions secretary, told the World at One a few minutes ago that David Cameron’s comments about Sadiq Khan at PMQs (see 1.13pm.) She was responding to the leader of the Commons, Chris Grayling, who said Khan’s decision to share platforms with extremists raised questions about his judgment. Reeves said:

London mayor row: Cleric feels ‘betrayed’ by Conservatives

A London cleric who David Cameron described as a supporter of so-called Islamic State has told the BBC he attended Conservative events and feels betrayed by the party.
Mr Cameron criticised Labour’s London mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan on Wednesday for appearing with cleric Suliman Gani.
On the BBC’s The World Tonight, Mr Gani said he felt “disheartened and betrayed” at being described this way.
Number 10 declined any further comment.
But at a Westminster press briefing on Wednesday, the prime minister’s official spokeswoman said : “The point the prime minister was referring to was that, at events, this individual has spoken up in support of a range of things including the formation of Islamic State.”
Conservative mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith previously described Mr Gani as “one of the most repulsive men in Britain”.
Mr Gani, a community leader and imam from Tooting in south London, said on hearing this characterisation: “I was shocked – I couldn’t believe it.
“I felt very disheartened and betrayed.
“I felt that this is hypocrisy, because I attended a Conservative Muslim Forum event invited by the Conservative candidate for Tooting… to encourage more Muslims to become Conservative councillors.”

When will you be transferred onto UC?
The Government has said that existing claimants of IR-ESA will be transferred in a phased migration programme beginning in June 2018 and ending by March 2021. The detailed rules and arrangements have yet to be announced. ‘Transitional protection’ will ensure that you are not worse off when transferring from your current benefits onto UC.
If you are getting C-ESA, you will stay on that benefit but will be subject to new rules, including more stringent conditionality and sanctions.

Terminally ill Northampton woman has appeal over disability benefits refused

terminally ill cancer patient who was refused a disability benefit by the Government has had her appeal turned down though her GP provided a lengthy description of her illness.
Jane Windle, from Parkwood Street, St James, was first diagnosed with a carcinoid form of cancer in 2001 and has tumours in her lungs and pelvis.
But last month it was revealed the 52-year-old would not be entitled to receive the Personal Independent Payment (PIP) even though she has been receiving the Disability Living Allowance, which PIP is phasing out, since she got ill.
Mrs Windle has a stent fitted and has difficulty, breathing, moving and even struggles to stand up unaided.
The couple appealed the decision at the start of April and supplied the Department for Work and Pensions with a DS1500 form from her GP explaining the extent her cancer affects her, listing a range of other debilitating conditions including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
But they have now learned their appeal has been refused.
Mrs Windle says the decision has left the couple desperate.
She said: “It is so stressful.
“Now that money has stopped it is just crazy.
“We just think, how are we going to manage?
“I will have to get rid of all sorts of things – my phone will have to go, there is no way I can afford that.”
Mrs Windle and husband William have met with Northampton South MP David Mackintosh, to see if he can get their assessment overturned.
They are also looking to take the DWP to a tribunal to contest the decision – a process that can take months.
Mrs Windle says there is no way she can go out and find work.
“I just can’t,” she said. “I can go to sleep for two to three days at a time.”
“What if I am at work for a couple of hours and need to sleep? What are they going to do, roll out a bed?
Mr and Mrs Windle can apply for Jobseekers’ Allowance, but that would mean both would actively need to seek employment, even though Mrs Windle has regular doctors’ appointments and needs her husband for assistance.
Mr Windle said he will not stop fighting the decision.
“Jane’s assessment simply isn’t true.
“If these assessors were working in a hospital we would be looking at a complete misdiagnosis.”

Revealed: DWP’s secret, ‘financially devastating’ proposals for benefits appeals

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has drawn up secret plans for sweeping reforms that would make it far harder for disabled people to appeal against having their benefit claims turned down.
The heavily-redacted document was sent to Disability News Service (DNS) by DWP following a freedom of information request, but disabled activists from the grassroots campaign network Black Triangle managed to reveal the words behind the blacked-out areas.
The document, titled Appeals Strategy – Post Election Planning (pictured), was drawn up by civil servants just before last year’s general election, and contains 11 policies for a new government to consider, most of which are aimed at reducing the number of successful benefits appeals and cutting welfare spending.
Eight of the policies – which appear to be focused heavily on disability benefits such as employment and support allowance (ESA), personal independence payment (PIP) and disability living allowance – were redacted by DWP so they could not be read.
Work on introducing two of the three non-redacted policies is already underway.
Among the eight redacted policies is a plan to introduce a completely new appeal system, which would mean far fewer appeals being heard by tribunals, for example those concerning a point of law, with others heard by “an alternative dispute regime”.

How can Lord Chris Holmes be seen to be promoting the above when he went on to vote for these cuts to both ESA and PIP as a Conservative Peer, his actions will have a detrimental effect on disabled people’s lives to both Independent living and will undermine the UK’s Human Rights obligations.
As disability rights campaigner’s we are calling for his immediate resignation of the position he hold’s as Disability Commissioner and Chair of the Disability Committee for EHRC as alongside our peers and other user led organisation’s we think he is no longer worthy of this position.

Aylward Mansell was Chief Medical advisor to the DWP and at the SAME TIME was appointed to head the Unum funded Centre For Bio-Psycho Social studies at Cardiff University. A defacto conflict of interest. After he left the DWP he took up the Unum post full-time. Unum is the giant American insurance company which has been found to be crooked in the USA and was described as “..a disability denial machine..” by US law makers. Unum’s computer algorithmn, that was designed to prevent policy holders from claiming on their insurance, is the basis for the DWP’s Work Capability Assessment computer programme. The tick box system that finds the dead fit for work. Unum have been advising the Tory party since Peter Lilley and his “little list”. Managers from Unum transferred to Atos when they were conducting WCA. It stinks of corruption, collusion and ruthless ideology.
UC has no form – The claim process is based on the Claimant Commitment contract. once that is sorted out you can go onto UC having signed online or over the phone. The claimant commitment is all about getting work & what to expect from your work coach, so totally the wrong thing for the disabled who can`t work. What UC does from ESA is make no one disabled so we are all equal to find work.

The EU trades with poorer countries and sells their goods in catalogues in Uk at ridiculous prices, £80 for a dress etc. The only jobs created are in the call centres and warehouses that are storing the goods.

Under Freud Great Britain is turning into Brazil… not the South American country where the next olympic games will be held but Terry Gilliham’s film Brazil where society turns pathologically bureaucratic and hideously dystopic.
I’m currently trying to cope with the 35-hour a week “worksearch”. It is, frankly, impossible to do diligently and you find yourself having to drag your heels to make everything stretch out to fill the required time span. My local Jobcentre is about three miles away from me and I’ve taken to walking to and from it most weekdays (to accumulate time to record on my “Worksearch Diary”) spending a couple of hours at the Jobcentre itself, using their piss poor workstations, looking for work. Walking very slowly and scanning online vacancies at a snail-like pace enables me to book something like five hours every weekday activity. Walking to the library a couple of times a week (its only open for three days a week due to cuts) to read local newspapers for free adds another four to six hours to my “worksearch” total leaving me to make up the remaining few hours in other ways.
The Jobcentre is utterly useless as far as “worksearch” is concerned. Even though it has a lost of internet ready computers not one of them is connected to a printer (so you can get hard copy of your CV, say, or apply for a job by letter), you can’t use a telephone except for “special” purposes, or use a fax machine. Nor does the Jobcentre help its customers by providing stamps and stationery, which can be very expensive when you’re on Jobseeker’s Allowance or Universal Credit.
Surely if the DWP heaps 35-hour worksearches on the unemployed, who might well be paying a portion of Council Tax and/or the Bedroom Tax, leaving them with very little, Jobcentres ought to provide computers with internet access, telephones, printers, fax machines as well as postage stamps and stationery to help unemployed folk to be able to do the amount of worksearch foisted on them?
I reckon pretty much everyone will be forced to cheat, every day, in order to satisfy the 35-hour work search demand. I don’t believe that anybody really could spend so many hours actively seeking work, day in and day out, day after day, for however long they remain jobless.
The only purpose of this demand, as far as I can see, is to gain political points by appearing to be tough on benefit claimants and/or to pounce on perfectly innocent people who fail in some small way to honour their so-called “claimant commitment” and end up severely financially sanctioned as a result.

Disability tsar faces resign call for backing Tory cuts
A prominent Scots disability campaigner is calling for the resignation of the equality watchdog’s disability commissioner for voting in favour of benefit cuts.
Susan Archibald, a former Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations board member, is being backed by a raft of individuals and groups in her call for Tory peer Lord Chris Holmes to stand down as disability commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) after he voted in favour of disability benefit cuts when they had been condemned by his own organisation.
Archibald has both written a letter and created an online petition calling for his resignation.
It is part of a new campaign from an alliance of anti-austerity, grassroots groups from Scotland and the north of England that are committed to fighting for equality – the Cross Border Alliance –will “name and shame” public figures “colluding in the cuts to disabled people and not addressing disabled people’s rights”.
The coalition includes Disabled People Against Cuts, Black Triangle, The Centre for Welfare Reform, Carer Watch, and the Spartacus online campaigning network.

SNP calls to see reports on suicides following benefits cuts
THE SNP’s Westminster spokeswoman for Social Justice and Welfare, Dr Eilidh Whiteford MP, has insisted “lessons must be learned” after disability rights campaigners won an appeal against the UK Government’s refusal to publish reports into the deaths of people who took their own lives after their benefits were cut.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) may now be forced to disclose details of the investigations into suicides and other deaths.
Whiteford said: “The SNP has twice asked the Prime Minister why these reports have not been published by the DWP and twice there have been no answers.
“Lessons must be learnt from these tragic deaths and more must be done to ensure that there are no more deaths as a result of the Tories’ deeply damaging policies.”

“HUNT BACKPEDALS VERY FAST WHEN CHALLENGED”
Update: Jeremy Hunt said, in Parliament this afternoon, that “Yes, we are imposing a new contract”. This is the first time he has used the word “impose” in the Commons, and one can only assume this is an attempt to sever a line of attack from the Junior Doctors, after yesterday’s Guardian piece; that is, he is basically saying “Right. We’ve said ‘impose’ – now what are you going to do about it?”.
This is where, legally, it gets messy – and throws up at least three issues.
One: whether Jeremy Hunt has the right, as Secretary of State for Health, to force Junior Doctor’s employers to accept a new contract without the approval of its employees; the wording of the letter from the DoH solicitors would indicate not, as it appears Hunt is neither their employer nor can he do more than “take steps leading to the introduction of” contracts according to the 2006 act. He has also financially been pressurising Trust’s over the contract, with threats of forcing them to dismiss Junior Doctors or pull their funding if the former won’t impose the contract
Two: if an employer wishes to “impose” a new contract, they must give formal notice of the termination of the old contract, dismiss the employee and offer re-engagement on the new terms. This throws up a myriad of problems with doctors who are on longer, multi-year contracts with a ‘lead employer’; it only applies in uncomplicated terms to the new, August intake of trainees or those whose contracts expire – and even then, the contract is still deemed unworkable, dangerous and completely irrelevant to a “7-day NHS”, so why should “rookies” be used as guinea pigs?
Three: Jeremy Hunt is not the “employer” of Junior Doctors who work for NHS Foundation Trusts, councils and GP practices. He can only “instruct” (as noted above), but this can only be after a public consultation has taken place looking at the effects of his plans – which has not been done.
As Heidi Alexander, Labour Shadow Health Secretary put it: “(Hunt’s) motives, judgement and competence are now being called into question. If Jeremy Hunt is now claiming he isn’t imposing the contract, then this also raises the prospect that he has misled Parliament. (He) needs to urgently clarify whether or not he has the powers to impose a new contract”.
It matters even more, because the basis for the BMA’s industrial action has been the apparent “imposition” of the contract – and if this is not going to be the case, the Health Secretary has not only misled parliament, but also doctors, professional bodies and the public as a whole.
