Oh Ros, You’re An Embarrassment We Can’t Ignore #DontIgnoreIt

WorkieThe last time the DWP used the word workie they were encouraging young people to tweet pictures of themselves whilst they were being exploited on unpaid work experience schemes. It was a predictable disaster that was roundly ignored by the nation’s youth.  Now they have decided that a Workie is actually a giant multi-coloured monster like the one pictured.  Really.

This is Pension Minster Ros Altmann’s big idea to encourage small employers to sign up their staff to Workplace Pensions.  The Workie will debut on prime time televion tonight in a series of ads accompanied by a twitter campaign using the hashtag #DontIgnoreIt.

It is astonishing that the (unelected) Pension’s Minister should attempt to treat the public like small chldren. This is what the government thinks of normal people.  That we are fucking idiots who can be persuaded to do as we’re told by a giant furry kid’s TV character.  At a time of so-called austerity latte slurping wankers at some advertising agency have been paid real money for this embarrassment.  Our money.  £8.5 million pounds of it.  According to a gushing DWP press release Ros Altmann was personally involved in designing the character.  You can tell. It’s shit.

There are lots of things currently taking place that shouldn’t be ignored, besides workplace pensions.  Like Ros Altmann’s idea that we should work until we die.  Or record street homelessness.  Or the growing number of deaths linked to welfare reforms.  This bungled pensions campaign is a good chance to let everybody know just how far the chaos and carnage dealt out by the DWP has gone.  #DontIgnoreIt

Disabled People Against Cuts are also calling on people to tweet using the hashtag #PMQs to highlight the human rights violations of disabled people: http://dftr.org.uk/Songbird.php?TweetFile=PMQs

      • The character that would express the mantra of the DWP would be a balding clown dressed in an SS stormtroopers tunic with the deaths head totenkopf inignia of the worlds most evil regime emblazoned on the lapels.

The public would easily engage with this figure, better known as “DUNKO THE CLOWN”, for he and his despicable departments Eugenics led attacks on the poorest, most vulnerable and disabled……………..

Each and every time i watch any advertising by the DWP, it reminds me of the trail of thousands of dead bodies left in their wake.

Neighbours told not to be alarmed if they see actors dressed as armed Nazi stormtroopers at Highgate Cemetery

          Camden New Journal – 14th Oct 2015

DON’T be alarmed by the wails of distress coming from beyond the walls of Highgate Cemetery, and do not be afraid if Nazi stormtroopers are spotted heading into the historic graveyard.

This is the message from BBC film producers preparing to bring their cameras to the cemetery to shoot a drama which imagines what might have happened if the Germans had won the Battle of Britain during World War II.

          • why on Earth would anyone want to imagine that? Be thank they didn’t win and put an end to it, all this imaging these awful sufferings will not bring anything positive to the sufferings they did cause when they were in power.

            • Alas…..the NEW NAZIS are in charge in UK right now. If Cameron was in power in the 1930s, he would’ve had Hitler over for tea at Downing Street, and dinner with the King a few blocks up the street. He would be gushing with praise at the newly revitalized German economy. Human Rights wouldn’t get a mention. After all, The tories are doing exactly what Hitler was doing in the 1930s.
We wonder when it will be a major problem, all these trade deals with China when China starts pushing its weight around, like when they take over a few wee islands out there, etc. What will Cameron do and say then?

    Confidence trick

A confidence trick (synonyms include confidence game, confidence scheme, scam and stratagem) is an attempt to defraud a person or group after first gaining their confidence, used in the classical sense of trust. Confidence tricks exploit characteristics of the human psyche such as dishonesty, honesty, vanity, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, naïveté and greed.

    Vulnerability to confidence tricks

Confidence tricks exploit typical human characteristics such as greed, dishonesty, vanity, opportunism, lust, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, desperation, and naïvety. As such, there is no consistent profile of a confidence trick victim; the common factor is simply that the victim relies on the good faith of the con artist. Victims of investment scams tend to show an incautious level of greed and gullibility, and many con artists target the elderly, but even alert and educated people may be taken in by other forms of a confidence trick.[6]

Accomplices, also known as shills, help manipulate the mark into accepting the perpetrator’s plan. In a traditional confidence trick, the mark is led to believe that he will be able to win money or some other prize by doing some task. The accomplices may pretend to be strangers who have benefited from performing the task in the past.

i haven’t cooked for myself since july 2012, when i was illegally sanctioned.

              • That’s truly awful, but unsurprisingly commonplace for this government. I hope it ends soon and we will all have the help and rights that we need.

                • /we eat just a meal a day and it is borderline quality have a bit of variety, there isn’t much of it and some days we get breakfast, but I have often learned to live without breakfast as far as I remember into my childhood. Sometimes we eat the same thing and it is monotonous, but then the food here is very cheap. it isn’t right though, no way for human beings to eat, then you think about all that food that gets thrown into landfill, surely we can all eat better it everyone in the world had ideals of the people we find in this blog. Surely we can run a nicer, caring world between us all. But I can go on some days without eating anything at all and never feel hungry, suppose over the years my body has been accustomed to being starved.

                • overburdenddonkey

‘But I can go on some days without eating anything at all and never feel hungry, suppose over the years my body has been accustomed to being starved.’ ditto…

                • I transferred from JSA to ESA the day my WP provider threatened me with a second sanction if I didn’t sign their documents, which I didn’t have to sign by law. (Fortunately, I already had an appointment at my GP’s for that day, whereupon I just broke down). I didn’t sign the WP documents, and I have a very long history of mental illness, very much helped now by tablets – plus two other disabilities.

I have been fighting the sanction since 2012 through the Parliamentary Ombudsman process, even though I didn’t actually lose any monies.

Since I was illegally sanctioned, I have had anhedonia. This means loss of pleasure.

Not that cooking used to be huge pleasure, so for that reason I used to spend a day cooking proper food like soup, cheese scones etc and then freeze them in portions. (The 20-year-old freezer is more like ‘A Day of the Triffids on Ice’ but still functions.)

Also, since I was illegally sanctioned, I have stopped walking every day for pleasure and vitality, and ironically, with that, out went my volunteering (beach cleaning and disposal).

My doctor says that I’m ‘blunted’, and I sleep loads. I’m lucky to be on ESA, so I can afford food, it’s just there’s no appetite.

However, I’m still alive, there’s only 4 and a half years to go, and my figure’s good.

                • Sian I was like that when they said fit for work with no barriers, they said we know you are disabled but we do not believe if affects the work you can do, or something like that. So they have put me up their with strong and healthy people who have no disabilities. So my support is the same as a healthy person, so they wanted me to do C.v.s and interview techniques (yet again) and at first had me applying for anything, including a chemist, would you believe. And the universal job shite, sorry site recommended I apply for teaching positions, which is strange as I have never had teacher training or even have a degree. Anyway for a while I didn’t want to do anything, not all. But now I think that is where those Tories want you, they want to destroy your spirit and your life and condemn you from any pleasure, because if you don’t work, can’t find work or can’t work, then they believe you to be nothing. But I am not nothing and neither are you Sian, don’t let them get to you, don’t let them spoil any more of your life. Don’t let them win, they are not human, they are not anything that resembles life, but you are human and are way better than them and you do not need money, or fancy qualifications or live in a fancy house to be better than them. Never let them have your self-respect or confidence, never let them put you down again.

Reducing calorific intake is theoretically one way of increasing your life span; theoretically because this behaviour has been observed in cells under laboratory conditions.

Going the way of Jamie Oliver, however, is certainly not going to increase your lifespan. Jamie has recently been presenting TV programmes on the connection between sugar intake and type 2 diabetes; looking at Mr Oliver it would be surprising if he himself didn’t already have this condition or be in the pre-stages.

The Terms & conditions of the ESA50 is to agree to be sanctioned within the terms & conditions. Worse comes to worse I have myself in for £800,000 disability fraud.

what you had a WCA you were put in wrag, you objected to it, sent your objections to the dwp for reconsideration, they in turn sent it to the contractor 17mths ago and you’ve not heard back from anyone since…which means you’re still in the support group…?

          • ‘…you had a WCA you were put in wrag’.

Does anyone get put straight onto Wrag after a WCA? Any stats on this?

No OBD, at the WCA, I was found fit for work. Then I went to court (alone) to appeal this, using Regulation 29 of the ESA Regulations 2008, and they put me onto Wrag. This is what I’m appealing now, that is, to be put into the support group.

And all this just because they’re questioning the integrity of our/their doctors.

There is a third group called “The Grey Area”.

            • To be put into the WRAG group it can be helpful if a registered GP states, unequivocally, something to this effect: “This man/woman is not fit for work. It is unlikely that s/he will become fit for work at any time in the foreseeable future”. This can then be duly disregarded at WCA, ahead of appeal/stress/tribunal & ~ if ‘luck’ prevails(!) reclassification.

1st you implied that you had no income since 2012, then said you had, as you were now on esa so either placed in wrag or sg, but are ‘blunted’ ie no interest in life…then maximus was holding onto wrag reconsideration, which means you had submitted an appeal…so i wondered why maximus had been sent your wrag reconsideration and it hadn’t gone to the dwp…all info on esa and appealing is of interest…so you were latterly put put into wrag after evoking reg 29 (2) @ FtT and then submitted a gl24 appeal to dwp DM to be placed in/moved to sg, giving the DM 28 days to come up with this decision…but instead have been left for 17mths in wrag whilst awaiting decision on 1st reconsideration from maximus and not dwp DM, thus open to all the vagaries of wrag, and should they not uphold your appeal to be moved into sg @ 1st reconsideration move onto the next which is MR, which means no income until they’ve decided whether or not to award sg, or move onto submit appeal to FtT which i believe is paid @ assessment rate until FtT and after decision either put in sg, wrag, or found fit for work…
yes people are put straight into wrag or sg by dwp DM
and yes our gp’s the nhs and ourselves have decided that we’re not fit for work, so it is an insult for another org to overturn that decisions and indicative of something being very badly wrong with our health care system..

Since the government have turned unemployment and sickness benefits into a punishing torture regime (with no refunds for people thirty years into the national insurance system I might add) I would not be at all surprised if seeing how the deal has been changed without notice people simply asked for their fucking money back.
If you paid in to any insurance scheme and the insurer decided to re-write the cumulative payout terms you would be within your rights to cancel the contract retrospectively. Thus it is with pensions and benefits..
I suspect the biggest reason for a clampdown on no win no fee solicitors is fear of some smart arse launching a class action against the government on behalf of short changed P.A.Y..Earners.

(Well I’d like to see anyone who’d carefully planned for retirement at 60 trying to beg with an employer to let them stay on or even FIND a job at 60!). • So you have the absurd situation whereby women are enjoying the safety and security of a pension at 60 while guys are still having to sign on JSA, with all the attendant sanctions, workfare and risk of homelessness until age 68!? You never hear the feminists mention these blatant examples of sexism; kind of like a widow’s pension but no such thing as a widower’s pension. Incidentally if you retire at 60 you are expected to live for another 18 YEARS; retire at 65 and you are expected to live for another 18 MONTHS. Small wonder that men have a shorter life expectancy when they are stressed out and worked to death paying for women’s pensions and all their other crap!

you’re right it’s not as simple and clear cut as some make out imo 60/2 is about right for retirement age…i could also argue who the hell says we should work in any case blah blah… of 30m workforce only 8m have occupational pensions, by cause of reasons of affordability…there IS age pension age escalator… http://www.ageuk.org.uk/money-matters/pensions/changes-to-state-pension-age/
a woman with an occupational pension can retire @ 60, but now will get no state pension @ 60, but @ least have an income which may not be much depending on length of pension inputs granted, men usually have to work till 65…SERPS will also go in 2016 replaced by a single tier pension, and will be roughly the same amount as PCG and age related esa/jsa is now…but no longer means tested unless one has not contributed 35yrs NI anything below 10yrs get nothing @ all, between 0/35yrs if one wants the full amount will need means testing…i could fill this page up with detail, to cover the inaccuracies of GLIB/SPITTAL FLECKERS statements, people would glaze over and switch off, so the GLIBBERS point dominates…

Congratulations Employment Minister & Indian Diaspora Champion Priti Patel who won Woman of the Year at #GG2Awards

    • Stepping Razor Sound Plate System

David Cameron has recently appointed Priti Patel MP to a new role as UK India Diaspora Champion. In this role, Priti will work to strengthen the links between the Government and the Indian diaspora in the UK, and promote the commercial, diplomatic and cultural ties that exist between the two countries. David Cameron made this announcement in India on 14th November 2013 during his third official visit to India since becoming Prime Minister.

      David Cameron said:

“I’ve made a personal commitment to strengthening UK-India relations because I believe we can be one of the great partnerships of the 21st century. And I firmly believe that British Indians – who already bring so much to our country – can play a vital role forging this strong relationship.

To date, I don’t think we’ve made the most of all they have to offer so I’ve appointed Priti Patel as our diaspora champion.

This new role will increase links between the government and the British Indian community, enabling us to draw on their experiences and expertise, and strengthening the bond between our 2 countries.”

To welcome this role, Priti said:

“The Prime Minister has made it his personal mission to strengthen the bond between the UK and India and I am delighted to support him on forging a closer relationship between our 2 countries. We are already bound together by many common bonds – economic, social and cultural. British Asians in the UK contribute hugely to our country and enrich our communities, which is why it is a privilege to have been appointed to a role which will enhance the special relationship between our 2 countries’.”

  62. “TWO UPPER TRIBUNAL JUDGES WHO ARE BOTH EX DWP COMMISSIONERS, IGNORE SUICIDE THREATS OF DISABLED MAN”

Judge Mark Rowland and Judge David Williams have complerely ignored the fact that i have reported having suicidal thoughts after my disability benefits were stopped.

Police have attended my home to ask if i needed counselling.

Judge Mark Rowland handed my appeal papers to a second judge after i complained that my human rights had been breached.
The basis of my complaint is that under article 6 of the human rights act, a litigant must be given a fair trial by an independent judge.

Both Rowland and Williams are former Department of Social Security Commissioners……………..

When anybody appeals to the upper tribunal, these judges cherry pick what you can take forth to the next level, in effect, disallowing pertinent evidence to go forward.

These judges are nothing but a pair of cheap crooks that steal benefit payments working on evidence furnished to them by the DWP.

Within my last submission to the upper tribunal i gave evidence from my ATOS WCA report……………

My report states that i was seen to sit in a chair, be examined on a couch and be seen to stand in one place, holding onto my walking stick for the entire duration of the assessment.
The report contradicts itself entirely. It also states that “i declined” to be examined on seventy five things that i was asked to perform.

Anita Bellows, a leading anti disability denial activist used my report to request a freedom of information response from the DWP.

    From: Anita Bellows

    25 January 2013

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

With reference to ESA Work Capability Assessments

What does ‘Declined’ mean when used in an ESA medical report form?

Is there an option in LIMA other than free text which allows giving
reasons for a client to decline to attempt to do something or to
decline examination? Because of pain for example?

What do DM interpret ‘Declined’ to mean when seen in a medical
report and when there are no explanations?

How can ‘Declined’ be shown in a medical report when the available
LiMA documentation doesn’t list ‘Declined’ as an option for the HCP
    to select?

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………….

    The DWP CAME BACK WITH THIS REPLY;

The explanation does not appear in guidance, but in order to provide an explanation “decline” is
a word used by our computer system (“LiMA”). It does not differentiate between ‘will not’ and
‘cannot’ perform a movement, but highlights the fact that it is not a movement a customer
followed through on the day of the examination. It is intended as a descriptor to highlight to the
Decision Maker at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) the customer’s ability on the
    day of the assessment.

    Yours sincerely

    DWP Business Management Team
    Health & Disability Assessments (Operations)

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

THE REPLY BY THE DWP IS A COMPLETE LIE………….

The healthcare professional has a screen in front of them that gives them the option of ticking a box that states the claimant was not able to do what was was asked of them due to pain etc.

The hcp types in the words “CLIENT DECLINED” and this is interpreted to mean that you refused, by both the DWP DECISION MAKERS AND THE APPEAL JUDGES.

The entire WCA programme is nothing but a fraud on a universal scale.

The judges, like Rowland and Williams, DWP puppets…………

David Cameron dismisses UN inquiry into DWP’s treatment of disabled people

The apparent UN investigation came to light in August

    Independent – 21st Oct 2015

A United Nations investigation into the treatment of disabled people by the British Government may not be all it has been “cracked up to be”, David Cameron has said.

The Prime Minister said he was proud of his Government’s record on people with disabilities and said he would cooperate with any probe, but downplayed its significance.

“Of course I will look at any United Nations investigation but sometimes when you look at these investigations they are not necessarily all they are originally cracked up to be,” he said.

There are many disabled people our world who don’t have any of the rights or any of the support we have here in Britain and I think we should be proud of what we do as we cooperate with this report.”

A leading disability rights charity said in August that it had been contacted by the UN Committee on Rights of Persons with Disabilities to help with the probe.

The charity, Inclusion Scotland, reports that it was asked to assist with the investigation, said to focus on changes to the social security system to help disabled people

Such investigations are conducted “confidentially” by the UN and the body will not confirm or deny whether the UK is currently being put under scrutiny.

The Department for Work and Pensions has previously declined to comment on the possibility of an investigation.

      • “THE GALLOWS ARE CALLING”

The Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has taken four months to reply to a damning report by the Work and Pensions Committee.

After months hearing evidence, the Committee called for a full independent inquiry into the sanctions regime – suggesting it appeared to be “purely punitive”.

Duncan-Smith has agreed to trial some changes to the system, including a yellow card system for sanctions, but has refused the number one recommendation – an independent inquiry.

“I am incredibly angry today,” Thompson said, adding that she had been crying ever since she heard the response.

“What crime had David committed? If he had been a criminal, he would have had a judge, a jury, a trial. But he didn’t get anything. The DWP just decided he could starve to death .

“He never even got an inquest.

“Wouldn’t you want to uncover what had happened not just to David but to all the other people who have died or had to go hungry because of a sanction? It sickens me. What is wrong with these people?”

Its not being introduced until Next Year!

        • I wrote another time, that there must be something on the go here. Smith must have knowledge of some Court case on the offing. How is it, that now, after all this time, he takes a measure to try do something, anything> He must be concerned over some investigation of some kind.
The fact is, the NEW NAZIS are well aware of what their policies have been responsible for. They know of the things you tell us here, Geoff every other day. They haven’t given a damn 5 years now. Clegg’s Liberals have a large part in this, as they allowed Cameron’s Hog Party Nazis to stay in power. The appalling ineptness of Miliband, etc.
Yet, now, George.I.Smith makes a little, and let it be said, very inadequate response to a bunch of recommendations months ago.
Cameron just more or less brushed aside SNP MP Angus Robertson at Parliament the other day. “I will look into it” The Hog Boy has not the least intention to do anything of the sort.
Hopefully, we will learn more about what is going on, they dare not tell us yet.
But Smith and Cameron, really should be in an International Court for crimes against Humanity.

Maybe you are right Gordon to presume that Corporal Clot is under some pressure from a source that we are not party to………
I noticed that the Eugenics department has retracted an answer which they gave to a query regarding statistics of those that had died within 14 days after being transferred from other benefits to jsa, hence:

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

I have seen the recent release by Department re ESA deaths who
where found fit for work released on 27/8/2015.

DWP recently generated ASMRs (age standardised mortality rates) for
many categories of claimant, but not for the category of most
interest: those who have been taken off IB/SDA after being found
fit for work. Many of these move to JSA or other benefits so can I
please have those statistics of those who died within 14 days after
transferring to JSA or other benefits from IB /ESA .

            Yours faithfully,

            G Ward

Government denying any responsibility for it all as usual and also not confirming or denying anything – a traditional and well tried trick to deceive.
Let’s hope that the U.N. people really do their stuff and don’t believe any of the untruths which are probably going to be told to them thrown by this pathetic bunch of Tory twats who are just Nazi’s, but without the hats, uniforms and jackboots to go with it.
The people who have died by their, and IDS’s cruel policies deserve nothing less.

  66. Santa hates you

Thanks for your post JV. I can’t believe the Tories have spent eight and a half million quid on this stupid gimmick. Are these are the same hypocrites who have been telling us over and over again that the welfare budget is too much? How can they rob the disabled, unemployed and those struggling to put food on the table out of what’s rightfully theirs, yet at the same time waste millions on pet projects? Then again this is the classic Tory party – the same nasty bunch of wreckers that in the 1980s deindustrialised the UK in order to the teach the working class who’s boss. They stuck the knife into British manufacturing industry, then stood back and watched it bleed to death. Whole communities and millions of skilled jobs where destroyed with no hope of governmental support. Now because there are no jobs in the manufacturing industry left people have to take any low paid service industry job that comes along to make ends meet. Yes these are the same people who have to claim tax credits. Shamelessly the Tories blame them for claiming this benefit, then cut it. Yet the Tories are the ones who hide the fact that it was their fucking policies that destroyed millions of better paid skilled jobs in this country. TORY FUCKING SCUM!!!

    • paultheswineherd

Santa hates you – Well said. These bastards should be ashamed of themselves, but they are not and never will be – the Nasty Nazi party is well and truly back with a continuing vengeance (but maybe for not too much longer – their own policies will most probably catch up with them – not least because of the proposed Tax Credits reductions)!

John: I’m interested in investing in a retirement plan. What kind of plans do you have?

Demented Furby : Well, we have a very special plan for you! It’s a plan that will give you the utmost sense of security for your old age years.

John: Good. How does it work?

Demented Furby: Well, you pay us a percentage of your paycheck each week. Better yet, you don’t have to do a thing! To make it easier for you, we’ll automatically deduct it from your paycheck every week. And when you reach retirement age, we’ll pay you your retirement money on a monthly basis.

John: Do I determine for myself how much I pay into this plan every week?

Demented Furby: No, we decide how much we will take from you.

John: How much do you deduct each week?

Demented Furby: That changes, depending upon how much we need the money to pay the current retirees.

John: What is the retirement age?

Demented Furby: Oh, the retirement age is whatever we say it is. It changes. As people live longer, we raise the retirement age up to compensate for our possible losses.

John: Hmm, I see. And if I start today, will the retirement age be locked at its current age?

Demented Furby: No. If people are living longer when you reach retirement age, we will raise the age limit. I’m really sorry, but there’s nothing you can do about it.

John: And just how much will I get paid once I retire?

Demented Furby: Oh, that changes also. We are always lowering the payments as more people retire and draw from this system, because there is not enough money coming in to compensate for all the money going out. You see, we take the money that others have paid into it and, after we pocket most of it, we divide it among new retirees.

John: But, isn’t that called a Pyramid Scheme?

Demented Furby: Yes, it is. But we call it something else.

John: And aren’t all Pyramid Scheme illegal?

Demented Furby: Yes, they are. But, as I said, we call it something else. And besides, we are immune from those laws. You see, we’re a subsidiary of a big corporation, and we have the backing of that corporation. Those laws don’t apply to us.

John: I see. May I see the contract please?

Demented Furby: There is no contract. All you have to do is trust us! Have faith in us. We’ll give you our word that we’ll pay you.

John: But, if there’s no contract to sign, there’s no guarantee that I’ll get any retirement money from you!

Demented Furby: Correct, but you do have our word.

John: If this office decides to cancel their retirement plan service, do I get back the money I already put into it?

Demented Furby: No, we keep it all. We don’t have to give you a penny. That’s the law.

John: Well, I don’t think I like what I’m hearing. It sounds like a scam. Give me one reason why I should consider your retirement plan if I am the one taking all the risk, and if there are no guarantees?

Demented Furby: Well, 99% of all Brits partake of our retirement plan because they are led to believe it is mandatory to sign up.

John: So, let me get this straight. Your retirement plan is based upon the Pyramid Scheme, which is illegal in. There is no guarantee that I’ll get paid once I retire. You can change the retirement age at will. You can change how much is deducted from my paycheck at will. If this office decides to cancel this retirement plan service, I lose all the money I put into it. There’s no written contract between us, only your word. There’s no obligation for you to keep your word, but there appears to be an obligation for me to keep paying you money, regardless.

Demented Furby: Yes, that is absolutely correct.

John: And what happens if I decide to stop paying into your retirement plan?

Demented Furby: Oh, you can’t stop. Once you start, you cannot voluntarily drop out.

John: Really? Well, let’s say I decide to join your system. What happens if I stop paying into your retirement plan?

Demented Furby: In that case, we will garnish your wages, confiscate your possessions, sell your house, car, and everything else you have. Then we’ll take that money from those sales to pay your fair share of this retirement plan, plus interest and penalty fees. And, in addition to monetary damages, we will have you arrested, taken to court, and thrown in prison. And then we’ll add court fees to your debt.

[Dear reader, what would you do if you were in John Doe’s position?]

John: I don’t believe what I’m hearing from you! What kind of security is this? I’ve heard enough! I’m leaving!

Demented Furby: But, Mr. John Doe, according to our records, you have already joined our retirement system! It’s called, “Social Security.”

The Tories have been generous for once ! They have provided us with not one but two juicy targets for twitter attacks tomorrow !

Target 1: From 10 am – The DWP are holding one of their ridiculous and patronising Disability Confident events in Swindon – and they have provided us with the hashtag #DisabilityConfident with which they intend to broadcast propaganda that everything they do is good for disabled people!. We are calling on all disabled people on their supporters to tell the people viewing #DisabilityCONfident what the government are really doing to disabled people. We have prepared a tweetlist which you can use to send tweets into the hashtag – or you are very welcome to send your own – pig tweets welcome!

Target 2: From 12.30 pm – Off to Manchester now where Cameron and Osborne are taking the Chinese President Xi Jinping to Manchester Town Hall for lunch. We want to know “Which part of ‘Fuck Off’ do they not understand?” Apparently we were not clear enough when we told the Tories to get out of Manchester at their conference. Manchester DPAC and allies will be there to show the the visiting dignitaries how despised Cameron & Osborne are in Manchester, and that all Human Rights abusers are not Welcome.

Lets show our support for them on twitter as well. Once again we have prepared a tweetlist which you can use to send tweets – or you are very welcome to send your own!

  73. But what about the UN’s investigation? forget it.

Lawyers express concern over ministerial code rewrite.

Conservative ministers have been accused of quietly abandoning the longstanding principle that members of the government should be bound by international law.

A rewrite of the ministerial code that sets out the standard of conduct expected has omitted a reference to the subject – a decision that senior lawyers say could have far-reaching implications for the UK and its relationship with the rest of the world.

Lawyers say key issues affected by the change could include decisions about whether to go to war or use military force, such as the use of drones in Syria, any decision made by an international court about the UK and any laws not incorporated into English law, such as human rights legislation and the Geneva conventions.

be and when was it passed?

Also if the “law says” that one has to have an “applicable amount”

why is my state pension called a benefit?

I hope there’s some Ch4/5 and independent journalists following some of these 4,500 ex-steelworkers on their ‘customer journey’, from their claimant commitment, through their endless ’employability and CV re-writing courses, right though to their new full-time ‘job’ – standing in a charity shop for their benefits.

        • overburdenddonkey

ps a UBI will change everything…

        • I always wondered that if you replace human beings with robots, sure they will make stuff faster and quicker, but if eventually everyone becomes unemployed, who in the world can afford to buy them. soon there will be only a limited amount of jobs of people doing things that a computer will never be able to do properly, will it be then that everyone ill be paid a survival wage and be endlessly searching for work everyday just in case there was a vacancy in one of these very view converted jobs, and all made to interview for them, only to taken on by one of their friends? Its not a very utopian world is it? Doesn’t really make sense in the. Of course we need robots too, but robots are taking jobs away from people who even enjoy doing their jobs, there has to be some sort of balance too. Just a thought.

ps not many are employed locally to produce the goods that; typo insert, ‘are now globally traded, as exports from the UK’..

                • OBD so let me just clarify, that instead of products or things being made that are traded, it is now money that is the commodity, money is being traded for money, products don’t really have a place in trade any more? as for classes I suppose their will always be different groups of people, but is it right to be able to destroy peoples lives and cause them misery, if effort that they may a few peoples lives at the top in paradise. That people at the bottom should still be made to be able they have all they need, regardless what those have at the top and I think basic rights should be expanded, not just to food, clean water and shelter, but access to justice, to a social life, to pleasure too, access to hobbies and fair access to be productive, but that doesn’t always have to be commercial, work either. if you care for your own relatives and care for your own children, or watch out for the neighbours that is valuable work to me, even though its not really seen as work in the eyes of the DWP, what I’m trying to say is that you don’t have to be economically active to be a value to society . And when it gets to a point like it is now, where people are now being denied a fair life, a comfortable life, like I believe all should have, just for a selfish few at the top. I think it ought to be changed, don’t you? Is that what UBI is about? or have I got it wrong? um I’m not trying to get your back up, but I like politics and take an interest in them, although I have not long had this interest and there is much I do not yet know, sorry if I may seem ignorant and please feel free to put me right, if I am not?:)

                • sorry OBD you have posted that many a time and it has gone over my head without any thought to read it but it is exactly as I grasped from what you said before. I’m not trying to challenge you, more erm publically gather my own thoughts as well as sharing opinions, I do believe we share the same ideals though, that we must all care for one another and make sure we all have enough, make sure everyone is treated decently, make sure everyone is treated with respect. It seems that UBI could achieve that. It is a way better plan than the Tory selfish ideals.

i merely repeated what i’ve always said, i never say any different…i don’t care if you’re trying to challenge me or not that is your prerogative to do so or not…capital is traded instead..it follows cheap labour…meant capital is invested globally in factories etc.. http://allofusfirst.org/

              • I know you have but I haven’t always understood UBI, well to the full extent, is it something that is just being worked on in Scotland or could it be in England too? I don’t want be stuck in England to live in dark dystopian Tory world. When you get Scottish independence, and I don’t blame you after who we have in England, if you came and took over the north, I wouldn’t protest. I think it is very good that Scottish politics has not changed, regarding to welfare policies, that their attitude remains a caring one. But its depressing living here, everyone is now working to their own ends, disregarding what happens to their neighbour. But I think you are right and wish you well, with your work.

                • overburdenddonkey

the link i posted is for a european UBI…scotland is still part of the uk and we have the barnett formula which actually tells the r.uk where it’s is economically and distributively, as it is linked directly to per head capita uk…
the scottish gov doesn’t have control over the welfare budget, it is a reserved matter….it’s depressing living anywhere in the uk if one is income short….dwp is the same where ever… selfishness is always depressing, depression is always caused by oppression…

                • OBD its peoples attitudes that make the difference, I don’t really know because I don’t live in Scotland, but people around me have become selfish and down right nasty, I hope they still look out for each other up there. But thank you for the link and I will have a look tomorrow.

“Developing our own social security system”, of course, is a total lie. Almost all of welfare, including pensions and Universal Credit, remains reserved to Westminster under the Scotland Bill 2015, with the Scottish Government allowed to fiddle around the edges a bit by diverting money from elsewhere to help people suffering from the Conservatives’ reforms.’
you’ll obvs get an idea of how scotland differs by the comments…
also how corbyn is turning a blind eye to what slabs are saying locally ie that slabs are autonomous from r.uk labour, this is simply not true….

                • ok OBD Westminster goes on and on so much about England and Scotland having their own say and their own say. I get the idea that everything is now different, that Scotland are to have different rules about welfare and Scotland should have different rules to what they have now, if they did change that would be progress in the right direction. But I suppose you get a bit hopeless living here in England, thinking your going to be under this austerity regime, forever and ever. While other parts of the UK move on from that. I don’t know what going to happen, but I don’t want to be stuck somewhere that continues to have these regressive values.

I am trying myself to write a fictional novel, about politics, but I feel out of my depth to do it, but at the same time, it is something I must do. But I need to find the truth and reality before, I write it, I want it to make an impact, that the welfare of people and human rights are important and to try and convey that message to other people, even change a few trolls attitudes.

Alas…..the NEW NAZIS are in charge in UK right now.

    • paultheswineherd

And – what happens if/or when China and Japan have a fall out over the ‘disputed’ islands between them (as happened I think last year). If hostilities broke out between them, would Cameron be inclined to support China? Or would he support Japan (so that he would not upset the Americans!) Or would he just be neutral/abstain/say absolutely nothing about any of it!
Or would he just fly off to The Bay of Pigs in Cuba to take refuge!

It looks like Sky News (10 PM News) and Faisal Islam was over the moon in talking up Camerons/Osbornes/XiPings visit to Manchester. Lots of Chinese youngsters especially saying how much they really loved their ‘People’s Government’ – even the ‘welcoming red and yellow placards’ had been especially flown in from China in special ‘Diplomatic Boxes’.
Apart from a brief mention of some demonstrators upset at ‘Tibetan lack of Human Rights’ – there was no coverage at all that I could see of our own ‘home grown’ demonstrators -whether they were drowned out or deliberately ‘not shown’ I have no idea (but I suspect both to be the case)!
I really wish that I (and many others I would imagine) could say that ‘I love our Government’ – but that is far from the case – I HATE THE FUCKING BASTARDS WITH AN ABSOLUTE VENGEANCE AND THE SOONER THEY GO THE BETTER.

    • Is Faisal Islam A Tory?

Do bears shit in the woods?

        Is Faisal Islam A Tory?
Well, it has to be said that with what I have seen so far – most probably!
Bears do definitely shit in the woods & the Pope is a Catholic and the BBC is also a puppet trumpet of the Conservative Party – no bars held – I also say that David Dimbleby is also a closet Tory.
I reckon that the BBC will eventually going to be broken up and probably be sold to that arch-liar Rupert Murdoch and his BSkyB empire. The TV licence will be scrapped in favour of a ‘Sky’ Subscription that will also incorporate the BBC. That fucking bastard will get even more viewers and then he will buy out BT (Sport) and have most of BT also! Oh – and then he would also get money from BT broadband etc! – The old, but nevertheless, very shrewd fucker!

    • Anyone know what what is the briefcases that those Chinese guys with the ear-pieces in surrounding the Great Leader all seemed to be clutching on to?

      • Funny thing was that they were all slim cases and they all had one. If it was papers or something why not throw them all into the one case. Or one of those cases-on-wheels 😀 Wonder if they were armed too? Looked like something out of some Attack of the Ninja Warriors film 😀

  89. “ONE MANS KILLING SPREE”

No wonder he needs round the clock security………….

Julia Kelly took her life in November 2014. At her inquest in March this year, according to the Northampton Chronicle, “Coroner Anne Pember, recording her verdict of suicide, said she also believed that the ‘upset caused by the potential withdrawal of her benefits had been the trigger for her to end her life’.”

Ms Kelly had been forced to give up work in 2010 due to pain caused by a car crash (which was not her fault) five years previously. In 2013, she was involved in a second crash and had to undergo a six-hour operation on her spine as a result.

Together with her father, David Kelly, she formed a charity – Away With Pain – to help fellow sufferers of chronic back pain.

But then the Department for Work and Pensions told her she had to repay £4,000 in Employment and Support Allowance payments, saying she had failed to declare capital funds.

It seems the government department was referring to money held by the charity, rather than funds owned by Ms Kelly herself.

Ms Kelly, who had fought for every penny of her benefit at three tribunal hearings, was bombarded with a series of repayment demands. According to her father, it was this relentless stream of brown-envelope letters that pushed her to suicide.

He told Channel 4 News about it. Take a look at the report:

A few months later, the DWP started stridently claiming that no causal link had been shown between claims for incapacity benefits and the suicide of claimants, in response to demands from almost 250,000 petitioners – and more than 90 MPs including the new leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn – to publish the number of claimants who have died on benefits.

We all know the DWP was lying, thanks to Ms Hassall’s report on Michael O’Sullivan.

The facts about Julia Kelly mean we must now question the magnitude of the lie.

We know the DWP examined the cases of around 60 people who committed suicide after their benefits were withdrawn or reduced – that fact was most recently mentioned in Prime Minister’s Questions, in the House of Commons on Wednesday (October 21) – but the Department has refused to publish its findings.

All Cameron would offer was that he would “look … at” the question asked about publication. He can look at it all day without doing anything about it, of course.

Meanwhile, serious questions are arising as we learn more about these deaths and the extent of the DWP cover-up.

How many people have died due to the reduction or withdrawal of incapacity benefits?

How many of these deaths happened long enough after their benefits were withdrawn that the DWP never bother to record them – on the grounds that it was none of the Department’s business (this is what happened with Mr O’Sullivan)?

How many more coroners’ verdicts have implicated the DWP in the deaths, but have been quietly swept under the carpet?

And – as the United Nations investigates possible grave and systematic violations of incapacity benefit claimants’ human rights – what can be done to secure the release of the facts?

………..and all the kings horses and all the kings men, couldn’t put Dunko together again.

Health Care Professionals working for ATOS, CAPITA and MAXIMUS are now requesting changes to their DWP contracts for fear they will be implicated in the deaths.

A senior MAXIMUS official declined to comment, insisting they all looked well enough to work as they limped away from the examination centres.

Sue Marsh, a former opponent of disability denial, now working for MAXIMUS, insisted that her £70, 000 salary had no effect on her views and the 2380 deaths were teething problems…………

  100. “DWP EUGENICS EXPLAINED”

#DWP ‘Benefit sanctions: Britain’s secret penal system’ by Dr David Webster University of Glasgow

Benefits claimants are subjected to an ‘amateurish, secret penal system which is more severe than the mainstream judicial system’, writes Dr David Webster of the University of Glasgow.
By Dr David Webster Published by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies

DrDavidWebsterFew people know that the number of financial penalties (‘sanctions’) imposed on benefit claimants by the Department of Work and Pensions now exceeds the number of fines imposed by the courts. In Great Britain in 2013, there were 1,046,398 sanctions on Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants, 32,128 on Employment and Support Allowance claimants, and approximately 44,000 on lone parent recipients of Income Support.

By contrast, Magistrates’ and Sheriff courts imposed a total of only 849,000 fines.

Sanctioned benefit claimants are treated much worse than those fined in the courts.

The scale of penalties is more severe (£286.80 – £11,185.20 compared to £200 – £10,000).

Most sanctions are applied to poor people and involve total loss of benefit income.

Although there is a system of discretionary ‘hardship payments’, claimants are often reduced to hunger and destitution by the ban on application for the first two weeks and by lack of information about the payments and the complexity of the application process.

The hardship payment system itself is designed to clean people out of resources; all savings or other sources of assistance must be used up before help is given.

Decisions on guilt are made in secret by officials who have no independent responsibility to act lawfully; since the Social Security Act 1998 they have been mere agents of the Secretary of State.

These officials are currently subject to constant management pressure to maximise penalties, and as in any secret system there is a lot of error, misconduct, dishonesty and abuse.

The claimant is not present when the decision on guilt is made and is not legally represented.

While offenders processed in the court system cannot be punished before a hearing, and if fined are given time to pay, the claimant’s punishment is applied immediately.

Unlike a magistrate or sheriff, the official deciding the case does not vary the penalty in the light of its likely impact on them or their family.

If the claimant gets a hearing (and even before the new system of ‘Mandatory Reconsideration’ only 3 per cent of sanctioned claimants were doing so), then it is months later, when the damage has been done.

‘Mandatory reconsideration’, introduced in October 2013, denies access to an independent Tribunal until the claimant has been rung up at home twice and forced to discuss their case with a DWP official in the absence of any adviser – a system which is open to abuse and has caused a collapse in cases going to Tribunal.

Yet the ‘transgressions’ (DWP’s own word) which are punished by this system are almost exclusively very minor matters, such as missing a single interview with a Jobcentre or Work Programme contractor, or not making quite as many token job applications as the Jobcentre adviser demands.

#DWP ‘Benefit sanctions: Britain’s secret penal system’ by Dr David Webster University of Glasgow

    • It is simply a delay of 14 days in imposing a sanction, during which the claimant will be able to make representations.

      * The government has admitted at:

      https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/jsa-sanctions-impact-of-not-sending-written-notifications-to-claimants-jan-2014-to-dec-2014

. . . that 47,239 JSA claimants (6.9%) who were sanctioned in 2014 did not receive notification before the money failed to appear in their account.

Applying this percentage to the whole period of the Coalition government, there will have been about 279,000 cases where claimants had their benefit stopped before being notified.

This issue was highlighted by Oakley in July 2014.

The government now proposes to deal with this by reintroducing computer-generated notification, but admits that this will be unlikely to be 100% successful.

      * The current provision that sanctioned claimants, other than arbitrarily-defined ‘vulnerable’, cannot apply for hardship payments for the first two weeks of a sanction is responsible for destitution and food bank use on a large scale.

The Committee firmly recommended that all sanctioned claimants should be able to apply from day one.

The government has now agreed only to consider extending the definition of ‘vulnerability’ for the purposes of day one application to ‘a wider group of claimants’.

Duncan Smith’s parliamentary statement, but not the response itself, specifically mentions people with mental health conditions and the homeless.

The government says it has also speeded up the hardship claim process so that awards are paid within 3 days, and that subject to feasibility the decision maker will in future set up an appointment to discuss hardship payments where claimants are ‘vulnerable’ or have children.

      * The government has flatly refused the Committee’s recommendation to track what happens to claimants in terms of employment and claimant status after a sanction, in spite of clearly having the capability to do so.

      * The government appears to have given up any attempt to ensure that the one third of all sanctioned claimants whose alleged ‘failure’ is not actively seeking work do not wrongly lose housing benefit as a result.

These claimants are ‘disentitled’ as well as ‘sanctioned’ and the response (p.5) accepts that Housing Benefit (HB) may be affected as a result.

A recent clarificatory circular to local authorities, HB Bulletin U1-2015 (30 Sep 2015) related only to the two thirds of penalties which are purely ‘sanctions’ and not ‘disentitlements’.

More than £13bn in benefits is going unclaimed

    VoxPolitical – 24th Oct 2015

“Vulnerable people are missing out on an astonishing £13.23 billion of benefits. The total includes over £2 billion in unclaimed benefits for jobseekers, and more than £3 billion for pensioners.

The figures were revealed in an answer that employment minister Priti Patel (pictured) gave to a question in Parliament – which highlighted that 45 per cent of people who are currently out of work aren’t claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance – so more than £2.5 billion is going unclaimed.

The largest unclaimed benefit is Housing Benefit – of which £4 billion isn’t taken up by people who qualify – followed by Pension Credit and Income Support. At the moment slightly more than one-third of people who are entitled to Pension Credit are not claiming it.

These figures do not include unclaimed tax credits, or Council Tax benefit – so the total will actually be even higher.

The enormous complexity of the system is playing a part. Someone who has lost their job doesn’t automatically receive the help they are entitled to: they need to know which of the complex web of benefits they could get – and how to apply for them.

The second issue is pride. This is particularly common among pensioners, many of whom have never claimed a penny in benefits throughout their working lives, and don’t want to start now.

Third is embarrassment. The demononisation of benefits claimants in Parliament and the media means people are too ashamed to claim the help they need – and to which they are perfectly entitled.”

Stepping – ‘Workie’ (because he is not a human) would probably have to go to the vets. The vet would say you are not human or animal – “Workie – you definitely need to “work” at all and every cost – so you will need to make an appointment (via their supreme highnesses at Job Centre Minus) to see Iain Duncan Smith”.
Workie turns up at the appointment – he sees IDS and IDS says to him: “Workie – you will have to work at all costs” or lose your benefits. Workie says “Fuck Off IDS – according to your ‘health care professional’ at ATOS I was deemed ‘not fit for work’ so I am therefore ‘not fit to work'”
Workie then has to do the usual and apply for a Mandatory Reconsideration – then has to wait for the ‘Decision Maker’ to make a decision. The ‘Decision Maker’ has made a decision – he has put ‘Workie’ into the ESA Support Group due to ‘Mental Health’ considerations.
Workie is totally confused – he is not an animal – neither is he a human – he will go into the ESA Support Group and hope for the very best!

The e-commerce boss will provide help and advice on how to get small and medium sized British businesses boosting their exports and gain access to Chinese markets through platforms like Alibaba.

…………..even stranger still is ALIBABA UK?

Just type in ALIBABA UK REVIEWS and what you will reveal is totally shocking.

…………………yet this man who formed this company is now sitting on a uk advisory committee is beyond belief.

Keep your eyes fixed on political donations to the Conservative party, as money t seem to override human rights breaches, especially in the uk.

      • AND LO AND BEHOLD, ADRIAN BEECROFT OF WONGA FAME, AND A MAJORITY DONOR TO CAMERON, IS ALSO AN ADVISOR TO THE ISRAELI PRIME MINSTER…………………………………

In addition to Mr Beecroft, former consultants include the hawkishly right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the would-be 45th President of the United States, Mitt Romney, now leading the Republican charge against Barack Obama.

        http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/revealed-how-adrian-beecroft-made-a-career-out-of-cutting-jobs-7789303.html

During his time at Apax Mr Beecroft rode the wave of the private equity boom, becoming involved in a number of leveraged buyouts. These involve borrowing to fund a takeover and then loading the debt on to the company that has been taken over.

Private equity firms also frequently borrow to fund the payment of dividends. Again, the companies they own, rather than their partners, pick up the tab.

Initially most of the industry’s activities went under the radar, involving takeovers of relatively small and unloved companies in old and (then) unloved industries which could be restructured and sold on with little attention being paid.

But as private equity grew and its targets got bigger – including firms the public had heard of, such as Yell, the owner of Yellow Pages, the fashion retailer New Look and the supermarket chain Somerfield – it was exposed to ever harsher scrutiny. And its activities were seldom cast in a favourable light.

Somerfield is a classic example. A source at Usdaw, the shopworkers’ union, described Apax as “extremely difficult to deal with”. “To be honest we were glad when the Co-op turned in and we were rid of them,” they said.

John Hannett, the general secretary, is similary blunt. After the takeover, he said, there was “a wholesale attack on workers’ terms and conditions” and Usdaw “very much welcomed the Co-Op Group’s takeover of the chain in 2008”.

It is not only Apax’s treatment of workers that has proved controversial. So have the structures used to facilitate deals.

When Apax teamed with Guardian Media Group to take control of the trade titles and events business of the publisher Emap, it was handled through an offshore vehicle located in the Cayman Islands. GMG has stated that the structure used was at the private equity company’s request.

With incidences like this, and the struggles of debt-laden companies sold back to public investors through stockmarket flotations, increasingly drawing criticism in the media and in Parliament, Mr Beecroft was one of those who rose to the industry’s defence.

He has been a leading figure in the British Venture Capital Association, and insisted, in a 2007 interview, that “we have nothing to hide”.

Although he pooh-poohed suggestions of a personal fortune of between £50m and £100m, the estimate might not be far off. Mr Beecroft lives in a mansion in fashionable Hampstead, bought in 1999 for £2.26m and now estimated to be worth £6.4m. While colleagues have claimed that he is not flashy, he does own four ruinously expensive classic Aston Martins and is unashamed about his ambition to win a race at the Goodwood Revival festival.

The use of such language suggests that, while he has complained about the personal attacks which have been coming his way, he might just be getting a taste for controversy. And not just through the support of his new venture, Dawn Capital, for the controversial payday lender Wonga.com.

Having spent so many years in the obsessively secretive world of private equity, perhaps he is acquiring a taste for publicity too.

That might prove to be something that Prime Minister David Cameron may yet have cause to regret, as his report and subsequently statements have threatened to undo his rebranding of the Tories, resurrecting the spectre of the “nasty party” all over again.

………………..Is there any wonder that Grant Shapps was recently in the Cayman Islands bolstering up the domain of so many tory tax dodgers?

  117. “TICK BOX SOFTWARE”

    …….FEEDING THE DWP SUICIDE FRENZY

The LiMA software assessment used by Atos Healthcare is a ‘tick box’ occupational health computer assessment and is designed and used for efficiency, not accuracy. This assessment tool is unacceptable for a comprehensive evaluation of any chronically sick and/or disabled person. The possible answers offered are limited in scope when compared to the possible variances of medical conditions and enormous range of possible physical disabilities. This type of software may be a useful tool in an occupational health department, for example, when confirming that staff are fit enough to consider certain work related activities if their fitness is in doubt; not their health. This would usually be carried out in a company, where the staff are considered to be fit enough to be at work, and not in a clinical assessment situation where the actual physical wellbeing of the patient is under consideration.

Note however, that when you click one of the lists to open it, you may not find all the usual choices available to you. LiMA uses its database of logical rules to restrict the available choices to only those that fit the information you have already provided

Curtailment of high scoring cases has been developed in conjunction with the Department for Work and Pensions as a way of reducing the time to complete lengthy cases where many activities are affected by multiple disabling conditions.

Curtailment is managed automatically by LiMA and reduces the amount of justification required in high-scoring cases. Based on your choice of descriptors, LIMA will only ask you to justify those activities needed to comfortably exceed the benefit threshold, beginning with the activities with the greatest apparent functional loss. (For those parts of the assessment that are curtailed, LiMA will automatically insert an appropriate standard summary phrase into the printed report.)

      The Guardian contains these comments;

In a sharply-worded letter to the Guardian, Paul Jenkins claimed the obligation that ministers must comply with international law had caused “intense irritation” to David Cameron.

Jenkins, who was the government’s most senior legal official from 2006 until he stepped down last year, is the most high-profile legal figure to raise the alarm over a rewrite of the ministerial code published last week.

Until last Thursday, the ministerial code referred to an “overarching duty on ministers to comply with the law including international law and treaty obligations and to uphold the administration of justice”. The new version simply refers to a duty to comply with “the law”.

Jenkins wrote: “It is disingenuous of the Cabinet Office to dismiss the changes to the ministerial code as mere tidying up.

“Whether the new wording alters the legal obligations of ministers or not, there can be no doubt that they will regard the change as bolstering, in a most satisfying way, their contempt for the rule of international law.”

The Cabinet Office has insisted that the code was clear on the need to comply with the law, including international law.

However, some lawyers believe the change signals a “marked shift” in the UK government’s respect for the rule of law, which they say is particularly concerning at a time when the UK is expanding its use of lethal force abroad.

  121. OT: Tax Credits Losers According to IFS

    (h-t to Refuted)

    http://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/7975

“national minimum wage for those aged 25 and over, which the Chancellor described as a new “National Living Wage” (NLW).

If the NLW were to have no effect on GDP, employment or hours of work it would offset 27% of the drop in household incomes from the impact of net tax and benefit reforms. In fact, as the Office for Budget Responsibility stresses, the NLW is likely to depress GDP and employment, and the money for it has to come from somewhere so this can be taken as a “better case” scenario, at least in the short term.

The new NLW offers such little compensation because the boost to gross wages is smaller than the announced fiscal tightening and almost one-third of the increase in gross wages goes to the Treasury in higher tax receipts and lower benefits and tax-credit entitlements.

Among the 8.4 million working age households who are currently eligible for benefits or tax credits who do contain someone in paid work the average loss from the cuts to benefits and tax credits is £750 per year. Among this same group the average gain from the new NLW, is estimated at £200 per year (in a “better case” scenario). This suggests that those in paid work and eligible for benefits or tax credits are, on average, being compensated for 26% of their losses from changes to taxes, tax credits and benefits through the new NLW.

The average losses from tax and benefit changes in deciles 2, 3 and 4 of the household income distribution are £1,340, £980 and £690 per year, respectively. These same groups are estimated to gain £90, £120 and £160 from the new NLW (again on a “better case” scenario). This suggests that a “better case” estimate of the compensation these groups are receiving is 7%, 13% and 24% respectively, on average.

There may be strong arguments for introducing the new NLW, but it should not be considered a direct substitute for benefits and tax credits aimed at lower income households.”

    So:
    – I was wrong to say NLW was not legislated its rebranding Nat.Mim.Wage [a bit like the rubbish about apprenticeships being a Brand perhaps?]
    – This will effect 8mil people not the 3mil being touted about.
    – NLW will only compensate for 26% of losses, rest gone to Tax office
    – The announced cuts costs to the claimant are clearly understated [how much is anyones guess but I’d say double the figures being touted around, this lot of ConCons don’t do things by halves do they?]
    – No one is putting out figure for cost of living increases & impacts etc [i wonder why?]

Another fine mess by GidIdiot the Wankie Worm

      • Mc Broon And The Ink Cartridges

        obd
Get real! Labour don’t just want the tax credit cuts just as much as the Tories, the want then even more; it is imperative for Labour to realise their goal that these cuts go through.

It was all part of the Masterplan when McBroon introduced them. Lower wages to get the workers used to accepting lower rates of pay but at the same time top them up with tax credits so that the net effect in household income was zero, or even an increase.

Once the workers became ‘hooked’ them slowly ‘wean’ them off tax credits. But now you have left by the short and curlies as you have made sure that wages are so suppressed they have no where to run and will just have to accept the intended drop in income. Clever, eh… 😉

Don’t see why people didn’t see this coming years ago.

For all those who think the Upper Chamber has done any real damage to the NEW NAZIS…..here are a few thoughts on what actually Labour 300 a day dudes have given you, in failing to support the Lib Dem vote…..
Those presently on Tax Creds will be protected (and only if Regime goes along with it, they might not)…….
But anyone who becomes eligible for the Credits, and that is from tonight…..YES THIS VERY NIGHT, take note everybody, will have those cuts put thru immediately!
Anyone still on the Credits will have the cuts later, but pay for them thru deductions on Universal Credit.
The total amount of cuts will actually be more than what Giddy originally planned.
This is what Labour has given us. The anti austerity party. Who will now support every other New Nazi social security policy. After all, John McDonnell said so himself.
Labour have destroyed themselves here. Dunno what the hell Corbyn is playing at, but it is fast proving to be more inept then Miliband…..and that would take some beating!
Very, very disappointing indeed. We hoped for better as well.

Is there no end to the madness? No, it seems not.

£300 a day equates to an MPs salary! But is is paid DAILY which means the Lords & Ladies have to attend DAILY (or get another Peer to punch their card*) unlike an MP who is on a SALARY – BIG, BIG distinction!

And it is quite possibly the case that they have to ‘clock-in’ by a certain time. Are they really going to travel into the House of Lords to ‘clock in’ and leave immediately? Like Euro MPs do on a Friday!

If you watch BBC Parliament the Lords is pretty busy most of time. It is standing-room only at time. And they do have debates with very long-winded and detailed speeches.

Of they can be seen to nod off at times, but come off it, everyone nods off when they reach a certain age.

Not that any of this justifies their existence or lack of one way or the other. Although Wee Nicola up in Jockland appears to hate them with a passion. Maybe angling for a peerage… 😉 Lady Sturgeon of Jockland? 🙂

They voted against government policy not because it is wrong, (it is also wrong to sanction benefits but they didn’t vote against that), but because they want to keep themselves and their second chamber in a life to which they are accustomed.

The first chamber should be abolished never mind the second one.

Now we are told if we come out of Europe we still have to pay into it so that ex prime ministers have somewhere else to feather their nest if the Lords gets abolished.

The available evidence suggests that a return to work could be considered within 3 months………………………

YET 2380 ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED AND THE DWP GAVE THESE COMMENTS ON A REPORT FUELLED BY THE DEATH OF MICHAEL BRENDAN O’SULLIVAN.

        PART 31.

A decision that a claimant does not have Limited Capability for work, or Limited Capability for Work Related Activity, is colloquially referred to as a decision that the claimant is “FIT FOR WORK”. However, what this actually means is that the claimant does not meet the functional descriptors set out in the ESA Regulations for LCA or LCWRA.
IT DOES NOT REPRESENT A FINDING ON WHETHER OR NOT THE CLAIMANT IS EMPLOYABLE OR WHETHER THE CLAIMANT WILL BE ABLE TO FIND WORK.

ESA is paid to people with disabilities and illnesses in part to to cover additional costs they might face finding employment or in their day-to-day lives.

Wrong – ESA is pain to disabled people who in the eyes of the DWP are able bodied & can find a job & cure their disability that never existed in the first place.

      • “HELPING THE DISABLED A DWP MYTH”

More jobcentre recordings: We can’t help disabled claimants at this jobcentre. You’ll have to go elsewhere

In the recording below, an adviser at a north London jobcentre actually tells me that advisers at this jobcentre can’t give extra jobsearch help or support to the disabled claimant who I’m with. The adviser doesn’t try to pretend otherwise. He says that the jobcentre can’t help this disabled man, because there are no Disability Employment Advisers at this jobcentre now (DEAs are advisers who are meant to have additional skills and time for disabled benefit claimants). Nobody else at the jobcentre can give the man extra support. The adviser said that the man’s only choice was to move jobcentres to one that does still have specialist disability advisers. That was the end of that. So much, I thought, for the DWP’s claims to me by recent email that disabled benefit claimants can expect “tailored support specific to their individual needs,” at jobcentres. These DWP claims of “tailored support” for disabled JSA claimants are rot as far as I’m concerned – as great a lie as the DWP’s use of fake benefit claimants and quotes in leaflets. It seems to me that when the DWP talks about “tailored support” for disabled claimants at jobcentres, the DWP pretends to offer a service that it does not.

    • “CROWN PERSECUTION SERVICE”

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) just attempted to prosecute a woman over a sticker placed on a window, even though she didn’t put the sticker there herself – in a bid to all but outlaw peaceful protest in Britain.

It all started with a protest about ‘poor doors’. When Dr Lisa McKenzie, a research fellow at the London School of Economics, heard that a block of luxury flats had installed separate entrances for its less wealthy tenants, she was pretty disgusted. To her, segregated entrances smacked of the kind of unequal, class-based society of which she wanted no part. So she attended a protest about it. During that protest, someone put a small sticker on the window of one of the flats.

Two weeks later, the CPS charged Dr McKenzie with criminal damage, claiming that the sticker caused £50 of damage – although this £50 was entirely hypothetical as a builder had simply pulled the sticker off the window. Furthermore, they had no evidence that Dr McKenzie actually put the sticker on the window either. Instead, they sought to use ‘joint enterprise’ – a law put in place to deal with drug and gang offences – to try her.

    • Give Ozzy time, sian 👿 👿 Is is not that case that ESA claimants are regularly ‘booted off’ ESA and have to make a new claim?

    • Anyway, nobody has ever explained why an ESA claimant with say, “depression” needs £30 a week more than a JSA claimant? Surely a JSA claimant on a much reduced income would be more “depressed”. There should really be an actual real and genuine need why they need the extra money, if say someone had to by incontinence pads, then fair enough. But an above the board increase just sound stupid. ESA could be scrapped and those with a genuine need to given extra money for their ‘extras’.

      • overburdenddonkey

one can be on assessment rate for a very long time….it is more costly when one is sick and disabled and jsa is paid @ a very low rate as is eandsa… http://www.coe.int/t/dghl/monitoring/socialcharter/Conclusions/State/UKXX2_en.pdf see article 12, The Committee concludes that the situation in United Kingdom is not in conformity with Article 12§1 of the Charter on the ground that: the minimum levels of short-term and long-term incapacity benefit is manifestly inadequate; the minimum level of state pension is manifestly inadequate; the minimum level of job seeker’s allowance is manifestly inadequate…

        • obd
You haven’t answered the question! Nobody was arguing anything other than the rates of JSA, ESA and pensions are manifestly inadequate. The question was why does an ESA claimant arbitrarily need more money than a JSA claimant? To save administration costs? Surely it can’t be fair and just to award a claimant extra money without enquiring if they have a need for extra money over and above what JSA would pay?

          • Or put another way: why does being on ESA equate to incurring automatically extra expenses? Nobody, nobody ever gives a satisfactory answer to this!

            • Stepping Razor Sound Plate System

Confused – It`s the way you put it like you have no knowledge of the Welfare State.

            • Or as the case may be lower, significantly lower particularly if they have the support of friends/family. Get the feeling that they are lot of ESA claimants being hit by the hard realisation that the gravy train is hitting the buffers, and as always they hide under the coat-tails of ESA claimants who really do have serious illnesses. And of course Georgie has employed the old ‘divide-and-rule’ tactic of continuing with the higher rates for existing claimants. So now it definitely will be the case of claimants in exactly the same circumstances receiving significantly different rates of benefits.

            • It is JSA that needs to be increased not benefits for the disabled decreased, because those that have the greatest need get a higher rate of DLA than those with only mild disabilities already.

Osborne knows he has scored a home goal with his attack on tax credits so he is looking for other victims to rob so that he can give tax relief to the rich – higher tax thresholds does not help those who are not paid enough to pay tax or are reliant on tax credits, so all of his talk on reducing taxes is for his own followers and recipients, which includes mp’s from every party.

              • If the government are looking for ways to save money then let them stop all parliamentary expenses in both houses.

If a tradesman has to work out of town or abroad, he has to pay his own fares, living accommodation etc., out of his income therefore mp’s should pay it out of their salaries.

    • Probably because he’s seen yet another opportunity to divide the groups affected. He wants those on JSA to hate those on ESA WRAG and those on ESA WRAG to hate those in the Support Group.

Despite so many thinking that it’s a total fucking breeze living on ESA, it really isn’t.

              • overburdenddonkey

no, hope is a cruel/can be master…hope in some situations are ok like i hope they’ll be some bargains @ the food shop etc…but in situations where ones very existence depends on others, not so…be realistic, know whats out there, whats actually going on, be as best equipped as one can be and act accordingly… ie appeal sanctions etc….

                • I never appealed I just left before they could sanction me, after 8 years of misery on what was more reasonable JSA, when labour was in, it was still hell, having so many rejections was enough a alone to kill a person and a waste of part of my life, I couldn’t go through that again and have all the extra hassle on top, so I stopped going. The charity may end one day and I may find my self on the street, but I will still have hope, even when all else is lost, but my existence does truly depend on others, I have become like a child, live like a child, in terms of finance of course. I don’t really have a choice in that. But if I had just had the right help, I may well have been financially dependent by now, but if not I may have had a level playing field with everyone else. But yes people should appeal if they can, I’ve just had enough of them and the endless job search myself. I used to think hope was cruel, but then it’s not hope at all, its despair that’s the cruel beast.

                • overburdenddonkey

but i bet it was hope that dropped you in the shit in the 1st place, and not certain knowledge of what’s really out there..?

Nowt shakes my hope any more:) But yeah you do have to fight things as well, its no use hoping and doing nothing, but you can fight in more ways than one, And my weapon is the pen.:)

                • Japanese Samurai Warrior

The pen is mightier than the sword 🙂

                  maria
it is knowledge that is power, not hope…
but in the case of tories red and blue hope of change anytime soon is pointless, which brings us back to the original point i made to you…you were able to escape a hostile system…and you post to gain info as you’ve already said…the sword of truth shall set you free…live in hope and we get manipulated, and dropped in the shit by words and deeds of others…and as you say, ‘ But yeah you do have to fight things as well, its no use hoping and doing nothing, but you can fight in more ways than one, And my weapon is the pen.:)’ so even you see hope as a small fraction of the function of survival…

                • OBD we have obviously found different ways in which to survive, yours works for you but hope is a big factor in my life, I was doing things before, I was as writing when I didn’t have hope, but it wasn’t getting me as far as I would be without hope. we’ll have to disagree on this one, I think:)

                • overburdenddonkey

no! agree to disagree is crap, maria…you had other options that you were able to take and took them, many others don’t have those…always think of the most disadvantaged…
                  i don’t hold with behaviourism nor behaviourists….
there is no hope in our needs, those needs MUST be met or we all suffer….
i post to paint the bigger (inclusive) picture as far as i am able to, from my own experiences of recovery from CSA/CA and of our toxic system…
i think about what will do it for all ie a UBI, scrapping conditionality, sanctions, eandsa, the WCA and building millions of eco homes….reliable supplies of vitality giving vitals of life for all, is a MUST….for many hope for it is just another word for lottery….and for others, hope is another word for certainty…

                • OBD I am not saying that we can’t physically survive on hope, without having access to clean water and shelter, and all the other social needs. I’m not talking about whether we live or die determines on hope, when you hope I was referring to more spiritual needs. And we need to fight for peoples rights, yes but in terms of physically doing things I am not much use in those respects, my talents lie in arguing for the need to look after the disadvantaged, the need that looking after each other is a better than looking after ones self. I am disadvantaged in this world, not in all ways, and my life isn’t in grave danger at the moment, it still has the potential to be in the future. I believe hope motivates people, it motivates me anyway. Everyone is different I am merely saying that we must use the tools that help us get along in life. I can understand why people despair, I’ve been there myself. It works for me.

Geoff – That’s awful what they have done to you – and how they have made you suffer so needlessly. I just so wish that Emma Brodrick could be properly be brought to book for apparrently fraudulent behaviour – this is definitely not right that she can get away with all of this. The WCA has been and is continuing to be a complete disaster – especially it seems for people with long term, as well as mental health conditions. Although I am no fan of the House of Loungers & Scroungers, last night, they did have some success with the tax credits issue. However, I have a strong feeling that Gideon/Cameron are going to come up with some way of circumventing it. Probably by giving that cunt IDS even more of a ‘wink’ to further attack the poor/vulnerable/sick/disabled. Before too long I’d have thought that IDS would have to have his ‘personal security’ increased even more than it is now. What a right cruel shower of Nazi shite the Tories now are – Bastards.

this is what actually happened… ‘In other words, rather than the cuts having been stopped and the Tories being forced into an incredibly controversial and difficult gerrymandering of the second chamber:- Anyone who becomes eligible for tax credits from now on will suffer the cuts immediately, without any three-year “protection”.- Anyone already on tax credits will still suffer the cuts, but they’ll pay them through reductions in Universal Credit rather than tax credits.- The total final amount of cuts will actually be HIGHER than those planned by the Conservatives. We fully expect that spontaneous demonstrations and rallies from low-paid workers cheering Labour’s heroic intervention are breaking out in the streets even as we type this, as the grateful poor celebrate losing more money in a slightly different way to the one originally proposed. We’re off out for a look.’

Duncan Smith says there are 750,000 vacancies in job centres.

The key priority now is to help people progress in work, he says, not to help them get into work in the first place.

      • Stepping Razor Sound Plate System

        Contradiction.

      • SRSPS you know when I was looking on there again I think it were two years ago now I was looking everyday for more than two months and every two weeks the same jobs came up in exactly the same businesses, the wage was the same, the contact details were the same. at first I thought, maybe they didn’t find who they wanted. No these were made up jobs, so that’s at least 50,000 true vacancies I think. And do you not think its funny that no matter how many migrants they let into the country there is still all these jobs available? And if their are all these jobs available how come the country hasn’t collapsed? I mean a strike of 750,000 people is significant to cause billions of pounds loss to economy even in a day.
And yet they think people like you, me and all those that post on here are stupid. They think the country falls for stuff like that, but they don’t. Most people never look at this stuff, their lives are too busy to, if they looked they would know they were being took for a ride, most of them anyway.

Mike Driver says the fraud and error in the department is put at 1.9%. But that is a gross figure. The net figure is 1.5%, he says.

    ———————————————————————————————–

Funny that is says 0.7% on the Gov website.

  149. Stepping Razor Sound Plate System

Duncan Smiths says some of these figures are not clear.

He is fully in support of food banks, he says.

Where people go to food banks because of problems with the department, the department tries to pick up those problems.

He says was visited by a food bank before the summer break. They said some individuals had a problem with benefit payments. He has tried putting an benefits adviser in the food bank when it is open, so he or she can look into these cases.

If this works, it will be rolled out nationally, he says.

    ————————————————————————————

So the Tories do believe Food banks exist after saying it was all made up.

    • Stepping,

      So….

Coachy who sanctioned you… Say for non-attendance due to illness, death of child, being 5 minutes late etc etc, is expected by these fools to be welcomed with open arms at the place people are scrambling to get food due to their actions? When people are at the end of their tether and absolutely desperate? Do they really think that violence won’t result?

      Here’s a scenario:
      I’m from DWP…
      piss off
If you don’t do as I say, talk to me I’lll Sanctio….
      THUD
      Someone call an ambulance!

      I’m from DWP…
don’t want to talk to you
If you don’t do as I say, talk to me I’lll Sanctio….
you sanctioned me already, for going to my daughters/mothers etc funeral!
If you don’t do as I say, talk to me I’lll Sanctio….
      THUD
      Someone call an ambulance!

I’m sure everyone can imagine the scenarios – how about inablity of DWP officers being able to explain the sanction applied and peoples reaction to that? those on drugs being added to the mix? This will not end well.

I can foresee DWP officers being escorted by plods….

Note : Food Banks get no Gov funding so outside their control.

its not DWP property, nor can DWP force themselves onto private property…

Duncan Smith says Scottish government could use its new powers to compensate for effect of tax credit cuts

Mhairi Black, the SNP MP, goes next.

Q: Isn’t there an argument for devolving all welfare to Scotland?

Duncan Smith says Scotland is getting power over the work programme and disability benefits. And the Scottish government will have the power to top up welfare payments.

The government is implementing the recommendations in the Smith commission report, he says.

Q: But 85% of welfare will not be devolved. That is not the full federalism promised during the referendum campaign.

Duncan Smith says he and Black are not going to agree on this. The Smith commission is being implemented.

Q: If the Scottish government tops up benefits, will people lose out by having other benefits cut?

Duncan Smith says it will be up to the Scottish government to decide what it does.

The Scottish government will get control of £2.7bn’s worth of welfare, he says. It is a “reasonable” and “generous” settlement.

Q: So, if the Scottish government tops up benefits, people will not have other benefits cut?

Duncan Smith says that is a matter for the Scottish government.

Q: Could the Scottish government use its tax-raising powers to stop the cuts to tax credits?

Duncan Smith says, as he understands it, that is the case.
Duncan Smith says Scottish government could use its tax-raising powers to compensate for impact of tax credit cuts.

Frank Field says the SNP are saying the tax credit cuts could not take place. Are you saying the SNP could use their powers to stop those cuts taking place in Scotland?

Duncan Smith says, under the Smith commission plans, it will be wholly within the power of the Scottish government to top up benefits, provided they raise the money themselves.

Q: But the Scottish government would have to get your agreement?

Duncan Smith says the power exists. They would not need to consult the DWP.

Another Fine Mess – This is certainly another disgraceful state of affairs. (and, to make it even worse, done by a ‘LABOUR’ Council too).
You may remember that months ago on here I was foreseeing a time when ‘private companies’ would be ‘opening private workhouses’. Well, it looks like it is coming to pass – but – via a so-called ‘charity – how shameful – it’ll be the sally Army doing it next. I can just see it happening now – the homeless forced into doing work for them (and earning the Sally Army money in the meantime) in return for bed & board and one meal a day to ‘keep them off the streets’. And, with a report that Britain is seeing a return to ‘Victorian’ diseases and malnutrition, this country is quickly turning into a third world country – next there will be ‘Refugees’ – trying to flee away from here to go to other European/other Countries!

Death by proxy does not lift the oncoming litigation from the DWP doorstep, it just shows the desperation to find an alibi from the deaths that they expected but were covered up by bogus risk assessment studies

  159. paultheswineherd

Geoff – This is an interesting, but I would thing a very unwelcome development. If someone has been sanctioned and he/she and/or their family is almost starving – the very last person they are going to want to see is a Job Roach from JCP (the very same organisation that sanctioned them in the first place).
I really hope (that as these ‘foodbanks’ are basically on private premises), the ones in charge would be well within their right to refuse entry to these ‘advisers), or if they do come in, (and they are on private property) then they could ask them to leave and if they will not leave, they could call the Police and get them out of there! Only an idea, but I hope one that may be taken up.
I would also imagine that a few of these ‘advisers’ could get ‘beaten up’ or worse if they didn’t watch their step (due to the strength of feeling)!

    • I would imagine their primary role is to snoop, their secondary role would be to intimidate and put desperate people from claiming thus pushing food bank user statistics down which the DWPcould herald as a breakthrough.
The DWP role in society is not as it once was , Paul. No longer do they administer social security, they just intimidate to deny benefit.

They are merely public servants that have been given a role to harrass the most weak and vulnerable into submission by whatever underhand means are available.
Their policies are pure fantasy transcribed from the input of multinationals that have infiltrated key government committees.

Hence BILL GUNNYEONS move from the position of DWP chief medical officer to MURDEROUS MAXIMIMUS just after the nod to take over WCA tests.
Soon there will be revelations about the multi billion steel contract the tories have given to Sweden through a defence contract to supply shipbuilding material.
Every major deal struck in our nation carries the big brown envelope of lobbying, parliament is nothing short of a gentleman’s club for progressing ones finances.
The involvement of our ministers and committee members is yet to emerge from the major welfare contracts of ATOS, CAPITA, SEETEC and MAXIMUS.

Insider dealing and corruption has no boundaries. Collateral damage of a few thousand lives the greed we have to pay.

    • It’s called rubbing salt in the wounds… 😉

    • It’s called rubbing salt in the wounds…. 😉

    • Wouldn’t foodbanks have to be complicit to allow these JCP fucking over the doorstep in the first place. Foodbanks are private property just like a shopping centre – they can refuse entry to whoever they choose. Incidentally, Jobcentres are NOT private private property; they are GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS and as such have NO RIGHT to REFUSE ENTRY TO or EXPEL whoever they choose from their premises: by doing so the Jobcentre are acting ILLEGALLY. But hey ho, what’s new… 😉

It would be an affront to human decency if Foodbanks were to allow these JCP fuckers through the door.

Another small point is that a lot of foodbank customers, probably most, don’t actually PHYSICALLY attend the foodbank in any case. They are refereed from an agency, social services who will pop round to the foodbank to collect the parcels. In a emergency accommodation unit I used to work in I would personally do this: drive round the the foodbank, collect the parcels and deliver them to the tenant’s door. Up yours to Iain Duncan Smith and the tenants having to trudge for miles, face the humiliation of a foodbank, then carry a bag of very heavy mostly tinned goods all the way home.

At a time when most politicians seem proud to treat sick and disabled claimants with harshness and suspicion, independent and accurate information about how to claim and keep your benefits is vitally important.Feedback: The guides have been invaluable: there is nothing else like them on the net.

Benefits and Work, was launched in 2002 (and became a limited company in October 2006) by advice worker turned barrister Holiday Whitehead and benefits writer and trainer Steve Donnison, to provide just such information.

It is unique amongst benefits information providers in that it asks for no funding or support from the government, local authorities, grant making trusts or large companies. Every penny of Benefits and Work’s revenue comes from its subscribing members.

This complete independence means that Benefits and Work is free to publish information that makes it deeply unpopular with the Department for Work and Pensions, multinationals with an interest in benefits – such as Atos Healthcare, Unum Provident and Capita – and even other advice providers whose dependence on state and corporate funding may have made them reluctant to tell the whole truth.”

    • “DWP PLANS TO INTIMIDATE THOSE MADE TO STARVE”

Mhairi Black slams IDS plans to turn food banks into “outposts” for the DWP
      October 29th, 2015 – 12:18 am Andrew Learmonth
      9 comments

IAIN Duncan Smith was accused of trying to turn food banks into an “outpost” for Jobcentre Plus staff after he told MPs he would like to see a trial scheme rolled out nationwide.

The work and pensions secretary said he would like to see the trial scheme at the Lalley Welcome Centre in Collyhurst, north-east Manchester extended after it was given “very strong feedback”.

Appearing in front of Westminster’s work and pensions select committee yesterday, Iain Duncan Smith said the trial, which had been in place for the past three weeks, seemed to be proving successful.

SNP MP Mhairi Black, a member of the committee, accused Duncan Smith of trying to turn food banks into an “outpost” for Jobcentre Plus. Instead, she said, ministers should be focusing on eradicating the need for food banks by changing their policies, which were “driving people into crisis situations.”

Duncan Smith told the committee: “I am trialling at the moment a job advisor situating themselves in the food bank for the time that food bank is open. We’re already getting very strong feedback about that.”

He continued: “If this works and if other food banks are willing to encompass this I would like to roll this out across the UK.”

Robert Devereux, the DWP’s permanent secretary, told the committee his department had two advisers working one day a week in the Manchester centre.

He said: “These work coaches have teamed up with local job clubs and they’re spending more of their time pointing people to vacancies and to work than they are in fixing their benefits.”

Frank Field, the Labour committee chair said that in the Birkenhead food bank, when an adviser was stationed there, “ninety per of people did not return because the person sorted out their benefit problems. I would have thought that the sooner you can roll it out, secretary of state, the better.”

Dave Simmers, from the Food Banks Partnership Aberdeen said: “Any Jobcentre staff involved in such a position would need to have the attitude and outlook that was conducive to a food bank setting, where a particular ethos will prevail. And that’s a different ethos, I would respectfully suggest, to a Jobcentre or the DWP.”

A spokesman for the Trussell Trust, which operates more than 400 food banks across the UK, said: “We welcome the Government’s interest in exploring new ways that the DWP might help people at food banks. But we would also suggest that there first needs to be a dialogue between the DWP and The Trussell Trust network about the possible challenges and opportunities that hosting DWP advisers in food banks could afford.”

Sister Rita Lee, who works at the Lalley Welcome Centre said she had given Duncan Smith the idea: “I wrote to the minister and the Prime Minister and received very nice letters from them both, but it was Iain Duncan Smith who said we could have a meeting with him in London. I think it’s a brilliant, brilliant thing that the Government’s doing [this].”

Food-bank use in Scotland hit a record high last year. Simmers says his organisation expects to give out 25,000 food packages in Aberdeen this year.

Black said food bank use was a result of the government’s “ideological obsession with austerity”.

The SNP MP said: “It seems ironic that the UK Government will not fund foodbanks and ministers time and again refuse to acknowledge the links between their policies and the increase in need for foodbanks yet they are now trying to use them as an outpost for Jobcentre Plus staff.

“Iain Duncan Smith should concentrate on trying to eradicate the need for food banks by changing the policies driving people into crisis.”

She added: “The need for food banks is a clear indication that the Tories’ ideological obsession with austerity is not working which is why the SNP remain fundamentally opposed to their regressive policies

Or is it this “feedback” just something else IDS is making up with role-playing actors? I can’t help but feel that having someone from the DWP to “advise” food bank users on getting jobs would surely make a bad situation just so much worse. Or is this his cunning plan to reduce the use of foodbanks so that he can claim his policies are working?

LABOUR COUNCIL GIVES THE NOD FOR FIRST WORKHOUSE

Yes, you read the headline correctly. As originally reported on this blog in November last year, a former bus depot in Blackburn seems set to become the first new workhouse the UK has seen since before the Second World War.

Amazingly, Labour-controlled Blackburn with Darwen Council has approved in principle the sale and conversion of the Transdev/Lancashire United garage in Manner Sutton Street in Eanam on the edge of Blackburn town.

SENIOR councillors have approved the framework of a deal to transform a semi-derelict former bus depot into a charity and recycling centre.

Under the scheme, up to 10 otherwise homeless people would live at the site under supervision.

A charity calling itself Recycling Lives would run the site as a recycling centre for metal, scrap cars, tyres, plastics, televisions and redundant household items.

The claim is that money raised from selling these items would provide the homeless and others on the margins of society with training, education, work experience and employment.

The dictionary definition of ‘workhouse’ is “a place where those unable to support themselves were offered accommodation and employment”. Doesn’t that description fit the proposed new use of the Blackburn bus depot?

The nasty ‘Nazi’ party tries to strike again – they think that because they are so very ‘priveleged’ that the ‘law’ does not apply to them. Unfortunately though, if it really came to the crunch, then the ‘Judiciary’ would most probably ‘side’ with them.
If one cares to see Prime Ministers Questions – I assume that those ‘powdered-wigged’ judges at the head of the table would most probably overrule everything.
The total bastards! (I stand to be corrected on this assumption)

Freedom of information laws ‘misused’ by journalists, says Chris Grayling

Leader of the Commons claims media use FoI requests as a ‘research tool’ to ‘generate’ stories

    Guardian – Thursday 29 October 2015 14.16 GMT

A Tory minister has accused journalists of “misusing” freedom of information laws to “generate” stories.

Chris Grayling, the leader of the House of Commons, claimed journalists used the Freedom of Information Act as a “research tool” and said it should be used for “those who want to understand why and how government is taking decisions”.

His comments are likely to anger freedom of information campaigners and the media, which has used the law to uncover stories such as the Prince of Wales’s so-called “black spider letters”.

The government has set up an FoI commission to review the scope of existing laws, which permit members of the public, journalists and campaigners to access information.

  174. How ironic that JACK STRAW wants to try and curtail the very freedom of information act that he pushed to introduce……………

Especially on the eve of the announcement that £890 PER DAY CHILCOTT will release the 2 million word document called “The observers book of evading war crimes”, “HOW TONY AND I KILLED HUNDREDS OF MILITARY PERSONNEL AND COUNTLESS THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS BY TELLING LIES TO THE PARLIAMENT AND ITS CITIZENSHIP.”

Transparency is a dirty word, especially to the staff of the DWP who are fighting tooth and nail to bury their under estimated benefits cull of innocent victims who were deemed fit for work……………..

But please remember, “FIT FOR WORK IS JUST A COLLOQUIALISM AS REPORTED BY THE DWP FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF MICHAEL BRENDAN O’SULLIVAN………………….
