Cuts to the Access To Work scheme – which pays for adaptations, equipment and support for disabled people in the workplace – shows the true nature of this pig-fucking Government.
Whilst Iain Duncan Smith rants at disabled people to get a job, the changes being made to Access To Work will make this impossible for many. That won’t stop people’s benefits being slashed however. Some sick and disabled people are now being plunged into desperate poverty, with no way out. It is little wonder that benefit claimants and disabled people are now openly calling Iain Duncan Smith a murderer.
A march is taking place in London on Saturday (26th Sept) to protest against the cuts to the Access To Work scheme. According to the organisers:
“Changes to Access to Work mean that Deaf, Deaf blind and hard of hearing and disabled people are being restricted to unrealistic budgets for support that does not meet their needs. The budgets are insufficient to fund qualified interpreters and personal assistants and prevent personal choice or control, placing jobs at risk.
“The introduction of arbitrary rules has changed the relationship between Access to Work and the individuals it supports. Deaf and disabled people are no longer being acknowledged as the experts in their own access needs and issues and problems they raise are being ignored.
“Please stop the changes to Access to Work support for BSL users and disabled people.”

DWP exposes IDS ‘lies’ about success of Disability Confident campaign

Work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith has been accused of lying to his own party conference about the success of his campaign to encourage employers to be more “disability confident”.
Duncan Smith (pictured) told last year’s conference in Birmingham that more than 1,000 employers had “signed up” to the Disability Confident campaign, which was launched by the prime minister in the summer of 2013.
But a series of freedom of information requests by Disability News Service (DNS) has exposed the truth: that fewer than 400 have signed up, while only 68 are currently “active partners”.

Michael O’Sullivan inquest: Chief coroner silent over WCA ‘future deaths’ reports

The chief coroner of England and Wales has refused to act after it emerged that only one coroner has written an official report warning that lives could be put at risk by the government’s “fitness for work” test.
Disability News Service (DNS) reported last week how Michael O’Sullivan, a 60-year-old man from north London, killed himself as a direct result of being found “fit for work”.
The case emerged after DNS examined the database of nearly 1,000 prevention of future deaths (PFD) reports, which are written by coroners if they believe “there is a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken” by an individual or organisation.
Since July 2013, such reports have been published online by the chief coroner.

Michael O’Sullivan inquest: Atos ‘has no idea’ if surgeon is still assessing claimants

Government contractor Atos Healthcare claims it has no idea if a former surgeon whose flawed assessment of a disabled man helped trigger his suicide is still testing people with mental health conditions for their eligibility for disability benefits.
Disability News Service (DNS) approached Atos following last week’s revelation that a coroner had demanded government action after concluding that Michael O’Sullivan, from north London, killed himself as a direct result of being found “fit for work”.
The coroner, Mary Hassell, described how the former orthopaedic surgeon who carried out the work capability assessment (WCA) for Atos had concluded that O’Sullivan was “at no significant risk by working”, and failed to ask him if he had suicidal thoughts.
Following last year’s inquest, the coroner wrote what is known as a prevention of future deaths (PFD) report, and sent it to DWP, because she said there was “a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken”.

If the bankers are being totally irresponsible and taking risk for no reason, they should be fined, that way they can’t give each other bonuses. If I was in power I’d see that we all had decent living, if that couldn’t be achieved we would all have to share what we had. I want the same principals people had when the war ended, a bright future for everyone, instead of just a few. But I’m no politician, I don’t know if this can be put into practice, or not but I won’t stand for what they do to people now.
Leaders or anyone with too much power will always have a tendency towards corruption. There is actually no need to have special tests, if everyone got involved in the processes – in the IWW we don’t have leaders, just people who hold positions, but they have no powers of their own, and can only act if democratically sanctioned to act. It’s sometimes a long and boring process, but there is not really an alternative unless we want to replicate current society with it’s bureaucracy and hierarchy. (Some bureaucracy is inevitable, but needs to be minimised) The internal democracy of the IWW is bottom up, with motions being debated, and decided at local branch level. There is no reason why this system could not be extended to everyday life, but it would need the substitution of the present day top down hierarchical system to a grass-roots horizontal and federalist system.

Erm I know everyone is corrupted by power and that I why it is better to have more than one, but some people are more easily corrupted than others. I find greedy and selfish people are the worst. That why I like democracy, it will only go on for so long, perhaps sometimes as in the case of this government its too long. I believe we need some sort of order in the world or the greed and selfish people will bully the more vulnerable. But the price of order comes at corruption. I guess politics is a very tricky business if you don’t get everything right, you end up back to the same old problems, with the rich with everything and everyone else with either barely nothing or nothing at all.

Elliott Johnson, 21, who worked for campaign group Conservative Way Forward (CWF), and was a member of the youth wing Conservative Future, was found on the railway tracks at Sandy station in Bedfordshire on 15 September.
An inquest that opened on Tuesday heard that British Transport police (BTP) are investigating claims that Johnson was being bullied by Conservative members and campaigners.
The coroner told the short hearing hearing at Ampthill in Bedfordshire that “he had read in the paperwork certain allegations with regard to the possibility of bullying before Mr Johnson died”. A BTP officer confirmed that they were investigating the allegations, with the assistance of Bedfordshire police.

And I wouldn’t bother either if you are not a car owner because the application form asks questions like: “Are you within a 45 minute drive away” from the depot. Of course the shifts are early start/late finishes; and of course you could be taking the night-bus to and from work, but there is a hidden assumption that you are a car owner. And no doubt a car owner of long-standing with a lot of driving experience. This is stuff they are going to tease out. Of course learning to drive, owning a car and gaining driving experience is a very expensive business so tough titties if you are unemployed. You got no chance!

There is a programme on BB2 at the moment about India’s (the World’s Busiest) Railway: “A motorman [train driver] is a highly respected job. They are paid 7 times the average national salary and take 13 years to train. Compare that to the UK where it only takes two years.” More like one year in the UK. Also 720 motormen to one motorwoman!

There seems to be a major problem at the DWP, Everyone from the top levels officially claims that there are no quotas and sanctions are only applied in extreme cases, at the bottom Jobcentre Managers are enforcing strict quotas and threatening to fire advisors who don’t falsify documents to create sanctions in the belief that this is their job (it isn’t BTW a recent FOI request for their job description reveals that their actual job is to help people into work and sanctions are not mentioned). At some level someone has decided to over sanction without any official authority in the knowledge that nobody is ever going to point out that because every single official statement to Parliament states this has not been authorised whenever someone dies they can be charged with murder and CANNOT rely on a defece of only obeying orders because those orders were manifestly illegal.

These are circumstances that should lead to a major prosecution for corporate manslaughter.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, an organisation is guilty of corporate manslaughter if the way in which its activities are managed or organised causes a person’s death; and amounts to a gross breach of a relevant duty of care owed by the organisation to the deceased. An organisation is guilty of an offence if the way in which its activities are managed or organised by its senior management is a substantial element in the breach.
It seems clear that, not only has the coroner accused the DWP of such a breach; the Department has admitted it – and failed to take steps to stop it happening again.
Let’s pause for a moment and note that we would not have evidence that the DWP has been lying about the “causal link” between its behaviour and the deaths of benefit claimants without my now-infamous Freedom of Information request – submitted in May 2014, after the inquest into the death of Mr A.
The request called for the number of deaths of anybody who had been found ‘fit for work’ between the end of November 2011 and May 28, 2014. This would, of course, have included the death of Mr A. The DWP failed to include his death in its statistical release of August 27 this year (which the government claims is a response to my request). Only people whose claim ended within two weeks of their death were included in the figures. I have asked the Information Commissioner to enforce publication of the full number of deaths, in line with both my request and his decision notice of April 30 this year.
It is only when the full number of deaths is known that we may be able to start assessing the full, devastating effect of Iain Duncan Smith’s policy of hate towards people with long-term illnesses and disabilities.

After all if you were able to find work and/or were employable, you would have found work, in a world where there were lots of jobs/. Except that falls down in the real world, because there are not the jobs there. (regardless of one’s ability or inability to do them). Or there’s a job you could do but a) it’s too far away or b) they don’t want a disabled person and/or they don’t want YOU. Or c) they prefer to give the job to a younger person because they can pay them less. Or d) you could do the job but would need help/support… which they refuse to give you.
Oh, or e) the job is okay and you start doing it. Then the company either completely goes bust, or just makes you redundant. Then you are in an even worse position than before. or f) you do it but get sick/er and have to stop. ditto worse. or g) the job sucks and you are bullied till you leave. PCS Condemns expansion of private sector in PIP delivery
PCS – 11th September 2015
DWP have decided that private company Serco will be involved in delivering the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
They will deliver PIP new claims and new claim reassessment service lines. This work is currently done in-house by DWP staff. Serco will taking on the work of about 279 staff at their existing sites in Bolton and Knowsley. Serco will take on this work in two phases, in October and November 2015. No DWP staff will transfer to Serco under these arrangements.
PCS were not consulted over this privatisation of DWP work. We have made clear to management that outsourcing this work is likely to create problems in the services to the public which our members will have to deal with. We remain committed to the public provision of services and believe that our members deliver services to the public to a higher quality and better than the private sector. It is wrong for the profit motive to be introduced into services which provide essential support for disabled people.
PCS has consistently argued for increased staff in DWP and opposed the loss of thousands of experienced staff through recent exit schemes. DWP should have planned for this additional work and ensured that it had the staff in post to handle it. Instead it wilfully allowed thousands of AOs to leave the department in June and now seeks to replace them with Serco staff, with little or no background in DWP.

This afternoon I testified before the High Court.
I answered the questions truthfully, including questions about my private life, questions no UK citizen would ever want to answer.
Still, I must take complete responsibility for all my actions, both public and private. And that is why I am speaking to you tonight.
As you know, earlier this month, I was asked questions about my youthful seconds-long relationship with a dead pig’s head. While my answers were legally accurate, I did not volunteer information.
Indeed, many years ago while at Oxford I did have a brief relationship with part of an unnamed pig that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong. It constituted a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am solely and completely responsible, although I blame peer pressure, alcohol, drugs and my youth.
But I told the judge today and I say to you now that at no time did I ask anyone to lie, to hide or destroy evidence or to take any other unlawful action – in fact, I didn’t know there WAS any evidence to destroy or hide, or anyone who needed telling to keep schtum or take unlawful action – it’s usually taken for granted amongst old etonians.
I know that my public comments and my silence about this matter gave a false impression. I misled people, including even my wife. I deeply regret that.
I can only tell you I was motivated by many factors. First, by a desire to protect myself from the embarrassment of my own conduct.
I was also very concerned about protecting my family. The fact that these questions were being asked as a result of a politically inspired revenge bio, whose author will soon been dismissed, was a consideration, too.

I don’t think that it’s currently part of policy, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it soon could be, as housing associations in Wales seem to increasingly becoming part of the system of control in ordinary people’s lives. Too many housing associations seem to be far too keen on setting up things like jobclubs ostensibly to ‘help’ unemployed worker tenants get into work, but i s really yet another method of social control they excercise over tenants.
I see no mention of payment whilst on the scheme, so I’m going to try and find out if indeed they are paid, or is it just another elaborate Workfare scheme dressed up to look like something else.

How many things are wrong with this, I’m not sure where to begin.
What if somebody is injured? As a non-employee they aren’t covered, nor are they seen as a true volunteer. What if the things they make/fix (beds for example) break and injure another disabled/elderly tenant, or another party like the tenant’s visitor/guest/relative? And the comeback is on *who* if the item breaks, whether it injures someone or not? As the tenant owning it would be out of pocket and lacking a bed.

Job creation, funny when they only pick 4-8 a year for the scheme and then only 2 of those become apprentices, who are then automatically fired after a year (to make way for new workfare slaves), and are thrown back on the dole. Put it on your CV? Yeah, employers will love that you hit rock bottom and were given a scraping the barrel workfare posting under duress, when the alternative was being evicted from your housing association (shithole) property by your workfare overseers. Irony piled on: You might get such a tenancy through being disabled with enough points to reach the top of the housing ladder. If you are doing tough manual work fixing houses, the DWP will suddenly notice and redesignate you ablebodied (though you were forced to do the workfare). Your benefits will stop. You will be ordered to take DWP workfare as punishment, that clashes with your current workfare fixing up houses – so you’ll be punished for missing one. But because your benefits stop, you can’t pay your rent so your housing association/ workBlair provider evicts you onto the street. They then expect you to carry on working free for them after they evicted you and made you homeless. Meanwhile, because the DWP decided you were ablebodied all along, they are prosecuting you for benefit fraud for ‘lying’ you’re disabled and for receiving disability benefits. You can be fined tens of thousands of pounds, put in newspapers, shown on TV, sent death threats by readers/viewers, and if you can’t pay the fine you can be sent to jail! Or they could send you on compulsory community work, that might be at your employer or might clash with your workfare. You could lose your disability parking permit/badge, travel passes, RADAR key etc. And your home, if they didn’t already take it for ‘not paying rent, due to your benefits being stopped’.. Your student rights too.
It says it’s aimed at those with multiple barriers to work, but in those cases you’re usually too disabled to work!

The information I saw earlier about CWP has been taken down from Crest’s website since I emailed them this morning, saying that they have been reported to Boycott Workfare. It explicitly stated that the ‘work’ was for 12 months, giving you training, experience and perhaps a proper job at the end of it. Different to your link AFM. See the link below.
I have applied to Crest several times and each time was refused even volunteering as ‘you are too disabled’. So I could be sent there as workfare now? What about other commitments people have, time-wise?
More irony on Crest: the buses (only free if you have a free bus pass) get you to where Crest is. But you are dropped at the top of a flyover. And the way to get to Crest is down at least one flight of steps to get you to ground level. Wheelchair users? You’d have to go in the motorway on a busy junction and try going along the road.

Peg it’s ok I think you get one every year, its a routine one at least it used to be, you better check there are no appointment to be on it as I can’t say what happens on it any more, they may have changed it but it is usually just a letter you get every year when they declare , or at least used to up the money depending on inflation.
pegasus – we will all get it at different times of the year depending on when we first made the claim. I had one – it is straightforward, I can’t remember if they did it last year or not, I don’t think they did, but you just fill it in to confirm no circumstances have changed (although in the past you didn’t have to).

pegasus – If they say send back ALL the pages of the letter, then send all 5 of them back. I think I photocopied it all though so that I could keep a copy of it for reference. There is a window on the prepaid envelope that the return address should be clearly visible through. I didn’t send them photocopies of bank statements or anything like that, not for the “annual verification of your claim” form, and if your circumstances haven’t changed at all ie no new savings that they didn’t already know about then you don’t need to either. If you havent acquired property since you began claiming ie like a house, and you havent acquired some kind of investment tied up in property then you don’t have to provide proof of that either. I returned mine by recorded delivery (it’s now called signed for) in case they said they didn’t receive it, although they say that they send reminders if you don’t return it. (The prepaid envelope is 2nd class, so if sending it by 2nd class signed for you only have to pay the difference in cost, whereas if you’re sending it by 1st class signed for you have to pay the whole cost of 1st class signed for – or you could just send it normal 2nd class in their prepaid envelope and ask at the po counter for a certificate of posting – but I like being able to call them up if they ever send me a reminder letter and I can quote the barcode tracking number! :D)

It is just an extra hoop the government have thought of to make us jump through in addition to us signing on every fortnight and it only relates to your current circumstances, just as your fortnightly signing does – if your circumstances are still the same ie you are still entitled to full income-based jsa, then that is all the form is for. By all means tell the jobcentreminus if you wish about what you are thinking of doing and they will advise you on what benefits or help you would get if you were to set up your business. If you are in Scotland they will also direct you to Business Gateway which gives free advice and workshops on how to set up and maintain your business. If you are in England I think it is called Business LInk. Obviously if you have a particular product idea which you are worried could be copied, be a bit vague about it until you have patented it or whatever. 😉
Just say that you’re thinking of declaring yourself a “social enterprise”, so that you can claim £££££ of Gov. and EU money, that’s what everybody else is doing.

A Warning though, with the changes coming in on Apr16 – if you are on a zero hour contract and you make £300 in the month before – its go to the back of the queue for 6 months – ie no Benifits.
If you are working as self employed be aware, HMRC will demand back ALL monies they/DWP have paid you, and and again no Benifits for 6 months – you are expected to save enough money yourself to cover that period.

pegasus – if your product solves a problem or has a use then google “how to solve x problem” or “what can I use to do x” to see if there is anything similar to your idea. You could also contact the business gateway/business link and make an appointment with one of their advisors to see what THEY think of your general idea and you could also attend one/several of their free workshops before you even mention it to the jobcentreminus, and only tell jobcentreminus when your plans are well under way or when you were at the stage of applying for enterprise allowance or loans. That way, if you take longer than you initially thought to set up or if you have doubts about becoming self-employed, the jcp staff are none the wiser and cannot hassle you about it.

One of the worst things though is that (apart from on this website (and the B&W website also) where people can air their true views and also tell the truth as they see it) mostly in daily life no-one is actually heard to say that they think that the present Government are a load of Nazi bastards. In fact we’re growing rapidly, as people become increasingly fed up with service unions that do naff all to support their members. We’re still small, both in the UK and internationally, but growing also in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Norway, Iceland, the USA and Canada.
I’d say that as we are a grass-roots, member led and truly democratic organisation that we are extremely up to date in that we live and operate in the here and now, reflecting and responding to the needs of workers in today’s work environment.

Actually we don’t think up silly songs, they were written a long time ago, but still have relevance. And they’re certainly a darned sight less silly than singing songs that glorify a god in the sky that probably doesn’t exist.
As for denying salvation, I personally, couldn’t give a monkeys about that, as I am agnostic. The IWW takes a very pragmatic approach and forbids the promotion of both party politics and religion in union business, as neither have any relevance, and are anyway matters of private conscience, but most of us have the good sense to not believe in fairy tales.
As for the IWW not questioning the Salvation Army’s actions as hypocritical, in supporting both sanctions and workfare I think you’ll find that we do indeed challenge those notions, as intimated in my previous comment. So far in Cardiff we’ve picketed Salvation Army charity shops on two occasions this year alone, and plan even more visits. The IWW is concerned with far more than just challenging things like workfare and sanctions, as you will know if you have been reading this blog for any length of time – remember the Bulky Bob’s campaign in Liverpool? That was a campaign by our Fellow Workers there. I’m sure there will be FWs from all over the UK who read this blog who are enjoying watching you dig yourself into a hole. The IWW is also a union, that actually looks after the interests of people in paid work, and organises to help the most marginalised, especially undocumented workers.

A hypocrite is someone who believes or practices one thing and preaches another. What I said was that we do not have the resources to deal with them as we are a tiny country with limited resources and our nationals who are homeless and starving (of whatever skin colour or religion) but who already have uk citizenship should take priority. Camoron is letting the refugees in not because he cares about them but as a pr exercise – if it means saying as a result more sanctions, more homeless for our guys he will be quite happy to do so. I also said as a so-called Christian country if we were to be able to take any refugees we should prioritise those who are fleeing religious persecution because they have become Christians in countries where Christianity/owning a Bible is punishable by death/torture (that’s usually those of a different race to mine, before you accuse me of racism).
I have been thinking about what you said in a previous post about the good samaritan, and appreciate your point, but I think it relates to individual actions as the samaritan’s kindness only really affected him and perhaps his family if he was taking a risk on that dangerous road in stopping and helping the man, and he happily paid for the mans lodgings (it doesn’t say whether doing so would have empoverished him or not) whereas taking in and housing refugees in a country which gladly evicts the disabled and the poor for having a spare room is bound to have an impact. Your point about whether I am agnostic or athiest is pertinent. As argued by Richard Dawkins, the position of athiest has to exist, as there are those who are absolutely concvinced, dead certain that there is a god in the sky. As a negative cannot be proved, then the only tenable position a scientific person can really occupy is that of agnostic, though I should perhaps have qualified that with describing myself as an extreme agnostic.
I don’t actually enjoy singing songs at all, and most of the songs and the song singing tradition of the IWW dates from it’s very early period in the USA and Canada where much of the membership did not speak English, either at all, or very well, so songs were a simple method of spreading the message, and as also in the early days the boss class used the Salvation Army bands as a way of drowning out the IWW orators, the IWW response was to invent their own songs parodying the Salvation Army values that were imposed upon the workers, namely, from a capitalist point of view, that the poor work hard and bide their time before getting the good life in paradise when the IWW point was, and still is, why can’t we have paradise in the here and now. The Bulky Bob’s campaign was obviously about so much more than just Workfare and sanctions. Yes, the immediate goal was to highlight the use of these, but fundamentally it was about the exploitation of workers who should be paid and the use of unpaid workers to undermine workers who are paid. Also about the economy and who controls it to whose benefit. This is invariably the case in whatever the IWW does.
The UK is the sixth most wealthy country in the world, and has plenty of resources. Your argument is that helping refugees would impact on the needy of the UK when there is no evidence that this need be the case; the two are completely unrelated, and by peddling the argument that you do you actually fall in with the government rhetoric about the need for austerity. There is more than enough wealth in the UK to deal with the refugee crisis AND also solve the very real problems faced by the poor and needy of the UK and have lots of change left over to do whatever. The UK is a small country, but the population density isn’t particularly high, (some 255 per km/sq as opposed to The Netherlands with 407 per km/sq) so room isn’t really an issue.
I think it’s stretching things somewhat to describe the UK as a Christian country. It’s certainly a country with a Christian heritage, but how many are even ‘practising Christians’? England has a state religion, The Church of England, which is often described as the Tory party at prayer, but in Wales the church was disestablished, so there is no state religion here.
Wales has a reputation of being a Christian nation, but even at the height of religious fervour in the mid 19th Century only 56% professed Christian belief, and nowadays the numbers regarded as practising any religion are very low. There are huge and increasing numbers of disused churches and chapels. I doubt that there are more than 5% of the population who describe themselves as Christian in any meaningful way. I would say that the UK properly reflects an increasingly secular society rather than a Christian society.
I feel the need to reiterate that the IWW is an apolitical organisation,(in the sectarian sense) so we do not sing songs that are socialist in nature, nor are the songs so much athiest as non-religious. On religious and political matters the IWW is, in itself, silent, and those topics are not allowed to be discussed during union business in any detailed way. Both religion and politics are regarded as private matters of individual conscience.

The Church was disestablished in Wales in 1921, which means there is no state religion, i.e. that Wales is officially a secular country. True, it may not mean very much nowadays, and even in 1921 it was a bit tardy, but the distinction is an important one, that church and state are separate.
The IWW always operates in the wider interests of all workers, and all workers struggles are related. All the information I have provided about the IWW, and reams more are available using a simple web search.

Don’t think gelatine-based pills really count, somethingsurvived; lots of ‘veggies’ take gelatine-based supplement capsules. Basically because there isn’t any choice. I agree with the decent and Tolerant society. But not to the death penalty, I think people should be kept alive and away form the rest of humanity, if they aren’t safe, so they can have a chance to think about their wrongs and change and become a decent person, plus Innocent people get accused of crimes, but if you kill them. They don’t get an reprieve.

Noop I am a disabled person, I have been shouted at in the street for no reason, bullied when I was at school, pushed in the mud, money stolen, personal things stolen. But the death sentence is not appropriate. I’d rather people been gave an opportunity to become better people and right the wrongs they caused and forgive them if they are truly sorry. I don’t believe in an eye for an eye. Besides when people bully you because of things like disability, its usually through ignorance and education deals with most of that. And what of innocent accused people noop? what about them? are going to give them back their life when it comes out they are innocent? Yes, OBD and I know your point is an extremely valid one. Just as those who abuse children were most often subjected to abuse themselves. A cycle needs to be broken and those who have been subjected to abuse or abusers themselves are presented with opportunities for humanistic and effective therapies to help them.
Trouble is, as you know, there is little space in which to have a rational and dispassionate debate about abuse, as the views often voiced by many people would make even the most extreme ayahtollah wince. Hardly conducive to a constructive discussion leading to healing therapies; anyone even considering these societally created monsters, (for society has to take responsibility) as worthy of compassion finds themselves accused of condoning the abuses of the abuser.

OBD I know people can become corrupted with their circumstances and have to learn hard lessons as a child, abuse is one way, being kind to children while teaching them corrupt values is another. Some people have metal illnesses that makes what they are doing believe they are in the right. Some people don’t know they are doing wrong, simply. But, and while not one person is 100% Evil and they all have their reasons for the atrocities they commit, the fact remains that some people plain enjoy causing harm to other people, and most people have a choice. Some people are abused in terrible ways in their childhood, but they don’t go on to commit the terrible crimes their abusers commit. Some people are just plain dangerous, whether it is their fault or not, Hitler whatever his circumstances was a very dangerous man. The poor need decent food to eat and food should not be wasted. Most foodbank food is in cans so you can go months without any fresh fruit. In places that see you once a fortnight to give you a (very heavy) ‘3 day supply’ of food, here as an example of one foodbank: on trip one you get a single allocation of dessert, which is a tin of custard. 2 weeks later you get a tin of rice pudding. 2 weeks after that it is a tin of fruit of some kind, IF you are lucky. If they have run out you get a second packet of instant mashed potato. However as a power cut has just demonstrated, you cannot make the instant mashed potato without the ability to boil water. And it’s not fresh fruit.
The only local scheme run by the largest hostel, is one that gives vouchers. But they are for meat at a local butcher’s, and this doesn’t reflect that most of those eligible for the vouchers have nowhere to cook it. Most of the foodbanks themselves don’t cater well for vegetarians, or at all. The soup kitchen run by the mental health place (the one JCP sends me to because of the free computers) now does a veggie option. A pentecostal evangelical church does a completely non-veggie soup kitchen. Years ago there was a ‘free food giveaway’ for the poor, unemployed and homeless but all it was was cans of meat. If your place has damp or leaks/flooding then paper bagged products are no good. Ditto if there are bugs and they can get inside your food. On the other hand cans are really heavy to carry home.
One size fits all approaches are what is damaging, not dietary differences. People are not robots. Some people need extra or reduced calories, fat, protein, sugar, salt, whatever. It should also not be only for the rich to decide/choose what to eat. That’s a right of everyone. Poor people included.

A coroner has called for an overhaul of the rules on payday loans after a mentally ill teenager killed himself on the same day that lender Wonga emptied his bank account, leaving him destitute.
Kane Sparham-Price, 18, who had spent much of his life in care, hanged himself after he was left pennyless when Wonga took out a payment due under his debt agreement with the company.
His death prompted the South Manchester Coroner John Pollard to write to the Financial Conduct Authority warning that he believed there may be future similar deaths unless action was taken.
Mr Pollard called for the introduction of a minimum sum which lenders must leave in a client’s accounts by law to “avoid absolute destitution”.
The financial watchdog said such a rule would be “undesirable” but underlined that it had brought in new measures, including controls on how often lenders can access customers’ funds, to help minimise the risk of people being left with empty accounts.

A news source for disabled people has been blacklisted by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) for exposing the link between benefit cuts and claimant deaths.
Disability News Service was launched in 2009 to highlight issues affecting disabled people.
Its investigative style has won it a huge following but now the DWP has stopped answering any of its requests for comment.
John Pring, who is a journalist for the site, was the first to reveal that a coroner had blamed the death of mentally disabled man on work capability assessments.
It took months of investigation to expose as the DWP wouldn’t acknowledge the findings.
The DWP’s press office now says it has ceased to deal with DNS and will no longer respond to it as a bona fide news organisation.
Its refusal to communicate with DNS appears to have been based on the allegation that DNS didn’t include comment by the government in news stories.
This is because press officers missed deadlines, says Pring.
“John Pring has done more than any other journalist to expose the scandal of these deaths and hold the DWP to account,” John McArdle of the disability fights group Black Triangle said. “The actions of the DWP are counter to transparent government and freedom of the press, upon which a functioning democracy rely.
“We consider the actions of the DWP to be highly offensive and discriminatory.”

Judge Peter Thornton
On the 8th April 2015 the Lord Chief Justice, after consultation with the Lord Chancellor, has extended the term of office of His Honour Judge Peter Thornton QC as Chief Coroner of England and Wales. HHJ Peter Thornton was appointed as the first Chief Coroner in September 2012 for a term of three years.

Thornton was made Queen’s Counsel in 1992 and appointed an assistant recorder in 1994. He became a recorder on 26 March 1997,[3] and a deputy High Court judge in 2003. Thornton was appointed a circuit judge on the South Eastern circuit on 12 November 2007.[4] In 2011, having been specially appointed Assistant Deputy Coroner, he presided over the inquest into the Death of Ian Tomlinson, who died during protests at the 2009 G20 Summit in London. His appointment came after the Coroner for the City of London requested that ministers appoint an experienced figure. [5]
On 22 May 2012, is was announced Thornton would be appointed chief coroner of England and Wales from 17 September 2012. In that capacity he will continue to sit on the Administrative Court so he can hear judicial reviews for coronial cases.

One of the features of a transition to a police state is that those who should defend our liberties transfer their allegiance to the executive of the state. Viz the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Serjeant at Arms. Now we have a senior coroner. Sir Michael Wright, coroner in the Jean Charles de Menezes inquiry, who has told the jury they are not permitted to return a verdict of unlawful killing.
That is of course the obvious verdict from the evidence. Were it not so, the disgraceful Wright would not have needed to serve the police by so instructing.
Wright went on to give a completely one-sided summation of the evidence, restating police evidence and ignoring the evidence of many close eye-witnesses who contradicted it. In perhaps the most extraordinary passage in a summation in recent English legal history, he went on to justify the occasions where the police killers were caught obviously lying:
