Striving For Revolution, Let’s Bring The Bastards Down

striveIf you take a step back for a while then the view is grotesque.  Next week a Government led by people born into vast wealth will introduce new laws that will plunge many of the UK’s poorest children into desperate poverty and imminent risk of homelessness.  Other legislation will mean that those who are assessed as currently too sick to work, but might have the possibility of working in the future, will now be abandoned to survive on just a few pounds a day.  Not only that, but they will be forced to cope with endless Jobcentre harassment intended to bully them into constantly looking for and applying for jobs that even the Jobcentre themselves admit they are not well enough to do.  And this is being called help.

Sick and disabled people in this group can even be sent on workfare, usually for a so-called charity.  If they fail to attend, or miss a meeting, then their benefits will be sanctioned – cut to a government loan of just over £40 a week – and then only if they meet the stringent means test for Hardship Payments.  For those paying the full Bedroom Tax – around £25 a week -this will mean surviving on just £2 a day, and out of that they will probably have to pay some Council Tax.  There is no way out for these people.  It is not a choice.  Even if jobs were abundant, and they are anything but, they are too ill to take them.  The sickness benefits regime could not be better designed to demolish the health and lives of those who depend on it, it is unspeakable cruelty in one of the most prosperous countries in the world.

Next week Tory MPs will cheer and applaud even further attacks on those least able to fight back as the latest welfare reforms are laid out in Parliament.  Larger families now face a third benefit cap being imposed in just five years.  A tiny percentage of families, trivial in cost to the tax payer, have been singled out again and again.  Just as they find somewhere new to live the government strikes with new laws and forces them to move again.  Many are already likely to be living in B&Bs, sharing just one room with their children in Dickensian conditions.  The number of families living this way rose by a third in just the last year, a fact that went barely reported.  It is the children in these families who are suffering the most, their lives and futures vanishing with every new stroke of legislation.

Five years of welfare reforms have turned the social security system into a nightmarish experience inflicted on those often already struggling to stay healthy, sane and alive.  These people strive everyday – just to feed themselves, raise their children and keep a roof above their heads.  Sometimes they are working, sometimes even on workfare for no pay, yet they are still smeared as lazy and feckless by politicians and the press.  Young people on poverty paid Apprenticeships, unpaid internships or work experience are told they need yet more ‘help’ to teach them how to get out of bed in the mornings.  These lies have been told over and over agan yet they fall apart the second you walk into Tesco and see dozens of people, many of them in-work benefit claimants, doing some of the hardest work in society.  It is these people, along with those desperately looking for work, or coping with illness, who have born the brunt of austerity – and they had nothing to begin with.  This was never about saving money, but turning the most marginalised, the bottom 1%, into a scapegoat to be endlessly tormented to distract from the crimes of the rich.

And yet so unempathic has society become, so casually indifferent to suffering, that almost everybody involved in this horror story feels perfectly happy and justified in what they are doing.  The true banality of evil is Harriet Harman saying it would not be right for the opposition to quibble with yet more atrocities heaped on the poor in case it upsets the tiny handful of swing voters who chose Tory over Labour.  It is Iain Duncan Smith on a religious crusade to save the poor from themselves and barely even noticing the trail of dead bodies he leaves in his wake.  It is the welfare-to-work company bosses who have justified this abuse by telling themselves if it wasn’t them getting rich out of poverty it would just be someone else – the same reasoning used by every gangster and war profiteer in history.

This casual approach to abuse trickles down the system.  Happy-clappy Jobcentre managers so wrapped up in themselves they can barely understand why they have become a grim laughing stock delude themselves that benefit sanctions are helping people.  Slithering tabloid hacks manufacture stories designed to inspire hatred of the poor and are so isolated from the impact of their behaviour that they seem to think it’s all a big laugh.  As do the television production companies who hunt down ever more genuinely vulnerable people so they can edit and splice their lives to present them as scroungers or layabouts.  And half the country – and it is only half – shouts ‘get a fucking job’ in unison despite living in a society where mass unemplyment is an economic fact of life and even Tory think tanks say reducing unemployment to zero is neither feasible or desirable.

It is not true, yet, that tens of thousands of people have died due to welfare reforms, although the number of deaths is growing.  But the lives of hundreds of thousands have been reduced to  a daily battle for survival and soon the number will turn into millions.  This suffering is a deliberate attempt to create a society based on an ideology that serves only a handful of people at the very top.  It is only in the interests of the rich that we spend our lives striving, suffering or both, rather than creating a world that works in the interests of everybody.  If we have to strive for anything then it should be to topple these bastards once and for all.

Would that have mattered? Labour would have been almost as bad, as they would still have wanted to convince Tory voters that they can be as tough as the Tories… And didn’t Labour promise to be tougher on the unemployed as one of the election manifesto promises? We have to remember that for the past 20 years Labour has pursued exactly the same neo-liberal agenda as the Tories. Labour has never really advocated socialism, just running capitalism more humanely, as if that were possible. (In truth there are some forms of capitalism that are ‘nicer’ than others, but all varieties of capitalism are predicated upon exploitation).

The only way of making real changes is a complete rethink about the way our world is run, the way it is organised. We need a world in which workers in their industries control those industries in theirs and wider societies interests, not primarily seeking profits, but providing for real human needs and desires where any financial surpluses generated are used to invest in areas of need.

For this to happen, we need to start imagining a future where perhaps all of us receive an unconditional citizens income, where those in ‘full-time’ work are working four hours a day, for four days of the week, and where the whole meaning of work is extended to embrace parenting, and many of the other activities that are at present regarded as subordinate to paid work, but which enhance all our lives immeasurably.

It can happen, but only if we start to imagine something different to what has gone before, and a large part of that needs to be, in my opinion, getting rid of the present political system with it’s built in bias against those who do not have great wealth. In short this present political system is in need of abolition.

      • the UK is and has been a one party state since the last war – bring on the next one cos its only gonna get worse

    • Problem is George, most people on this site decided not to vote Labour or not to vote at all. And before anyone gives their penny worth, Labour was never ever this bad. I am fucking gutted Labour never got in.

      • Do It To Julia

And with good reason, Bernadette. The only ‘campaigners’ on this site for a Labour victory were the self-interested disabled ‘lobby’ as they incessantly pleaded that we voted Labour – as if – in the fond hope that that they might wring out a few ‘concessions’ from Labour and that the ‘genuinely unemployed’ would be ‘left alone’ in the ‘WRAG group’ or whatever.

But what really grates is that the ‘disabled’ lobby knew damned well as did their able-bodied counterparts that Labour would have put the boot the into the unemployed (those on the meagre subsistence allowance that is JSA) on a magnitude greater than the Tories could only dream about. Imagine toffy-nosed Rachel ‘we will be tougher on the unemployed than the Tories’ fucking Reeves at the head of Work and Pensions – it doesn’t bear thinking about.

Labour are bad, bad bastards. Their record speaks for itself.

        • Do It To Julia

Just a few points from Labour’s atrocious record:

It was Labour who gave birth to the welfare-to-work industry.
It was Labour who introduced sanctions.
It was Labour who introduced workfare.

There was no hardship allowance payable under Labour unless you were in a ‘vulnerable’ group.
There were more claimants on unpaid work under Labour than under the Tories.

And these are bastards we were being urged to vote for! UN-fucking-believable!

          • But who else could have got in? The Lib Dems were in disgrace and the other parties were too small.

          • Do It To Julia; I personally did alright under the last Labour government, so yeah, maybe I too am being ‘self interested’. But my stance is this, you can reason with Labour, argue the toss so to speak. And yes, for me they are and still remain, the lesser of both evils. What do we do? Wait 20 years until we get something like the SNP in England, It ain’t gonna happen.

        • labour has betrayed working people, the poor and disabled and they seem to still be totally oblivious to what they have done – they are as foul scum as the bastard tories

          • Aye very true. Trouble with the Labour party is they’re all social climbers and on the make for more and more ££££ for themselves. That’s all they think about. With one or two exceptions that is.

They really are a fould odious bunch. At least the tories make no pretence of being anything other than total bastards. The Labour party are total bastards but try to put a smiling friendly face on it despite vowing to hammer benefit claimants harder than the tories!! What kind of way is this for the Labour party to behave? That’s why they’re detested by people now.

Only sensible thing for them to do would be to implode and disappear for good and let another party rise up to take their place with real socialist policies.

In England that is. We in Scotland already have that party in the SNP..

            • EveryLidlHelps

Yes, well said Raining. I wish to Christ I had the SNP on my ballot paper back in May, but being in England had fuck all to choose from.

Never vote Labour again. I’m no raging left winger by any means but I feel like they’ve stolen the very party from us. Tory lite as Tory shite!

Need someone new to believe in.

              • If the SNP has stood in England Labour would have been totally obliterated and be nothing now but a distant memory….

      • Tell me about it! I got sick to death of reading posts pre-election from those saying their was no choice at the last election, where in reality the Bedroom Tax would have been axed and UC put on pause by now had Labour won. Of course Labour were way off where they need to be (benefits cap being just one example) , but there were some glimmers there. There was only ever one choice: Labour or Tory; something that the idealism of too many posters did not take serious enough. Just see how very real this Tory government is now!

The best hope of a left prospectus – and meaningful opposition – now, is to vote in Corbyn as Labour leader; that’s £3 for those with even that money to spare!

        http://www.labour.org.uk/blog/entry/how-to-vote-for-our-next-leader-and-deputy-leader

If I am to be very honest, I don’t see which campaign groups brought an end to the welfare reform policies of the last coalition government? UC and the Bedroom Tax for example. WCAs, workfare, scrapping of the ILF etc., all painfully being on course; the efforts of campaigners seems to add a voice, and chip away a little between elections – great in itself but never enough. Am I missing a great achievement from the last 5 years? (genuinely asking!)

        • Av, it’s not so much about idealism – been there; done that – as about being no longer able to make the choice to support them after certain principles have been abandoned. And they well&truly have been.

It would be very much like voting Tory. And like someone in an abusive relationship deciding to stay rather than risking the alternative/being on their own and having to start to rethink how they lived their life. I could not, in all conscience, have voted for the Labour party of now, despite my MP bring someone I used to have a great deal of respect for.

The case for voting in the lesser of two evils can only last for so long & (for me and I understand for many others) had run it’s course.

It’s heartbreaking & very frightening but is also the reality. These people have made it abundantly clear they are not ‘for’ us; will not save us and feel that their role is to be just slightly less heartless than the conservatives – but largely to join in with them. It’s not enough. I won’t put my cross against that.

      • Jeremy Corbyn has just been on SkySnooze. Colin Brassneckier suggested to him that he was the “Michael Foot of the 21st century and that Tory supporters has been joining the Labour Party in order to vote for him to make sure that Labour was unelectable for the next decade”. Corbyn: “Michael Foot was a great literary and political figure of the 20th century”. Brassneckier: “But hopeless as Labour leader” Corbyn: “Let’s not keeping looking back especially at a time when so many are reliant on Foodbanks and we have record numbers of homeless living on the streets.” Ad break.

        • Another voice

It’s interesting that Michael Foot and the politics of the ‘radical left’ is always brought up as being a turn off, isn’t it? It may have been the case during Thatcher-era, but I don’t know how well that hypothesis stacks up after the onslaught of Thatcher and Blair combined for a good chunk of people at this point.

It’s worrying how normalised foodbanks are becoming, and welcomed Mhairi Black’s correction of Ms Patel’s comments on food provision as part of the welfare state. Might see if there isn’t a clip of that Sky interview on Youtube – thanks!

  2. Brilliant and sincere exposition of the scandalous abomination being inflicted on the most vulnerable in our midst by the pseudo democratic corporate thieves at Westminster. ‘Hats off’ to you Johnny. Thank you.

  3. Johnny, one of your most moving and heartfelt articles.
When it appears many of us bloggers are feeling the tightening of the screws on our online activities, we can be sure that you will prevail to tell the truth of all our suffering.

Ive been reading, and relying on your blogs now for a number of years, and the comfort it brings me personally to know that I am not alone, and my thoughts are shared helps me to remain sane, in a world filling up with dark agendas.

To me you are my Martin Luther and for that I will always have hope.

    • We all know that a majority of people in the UK are against austerity but when Ed Milliband repeatedly stated that he would rather have another general election than deal with the SNP surely he realised that his statement would make it pointless supporting Labour in England and Wales. I agree labour should and would have won the election if Milliband had spoken up against austerity and if he had stated that he would deal with the SNP and others who were against austerity. It looks like the Tories will find it easier to crush the poor than eradicate foxes.

I feel the same – keep the faith Loobitzh

  4. BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

DWP JCP SCUM tried her best to find something to Sanction me for this morning, but failed to do so. This was despite discussing problems I’m having & seeming to understand, almost to sympathise, or so I thought. What a fucking bitch. Trying now to bully me into doing voluntary work or attending some ‘skills’ course shithole, though neither is actually mandatory

    • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

Save your fucking breath Jobcentre bitch cos if it’s not mandatory I’m not fucking doing it, so up yours you DWP cunts

  5. BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

Is it legal to threaten JSA claimants with daily signing as a alternative punishment for refusing to do voluntary work?

    • They have their own perverse agenda mate. I’ve experienced it personally and that’s why i put ‘DWP + JCP = SCUM’ in a lot of my posts. It describes these bastards to a T. The absolute lowest that anyone can stoop to; trying to con and cheat people every day of their lives. Where a successful day is if they’ve managed to remove someone’s benefits and seen them out on to the street.

      • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

she tried to make out that I’d applied for a job beyond my qualifications ‘cos I don’t have CSCS, but when the clever twat read job description, for a Labourer, it said “CSCS preferred but not essential”.

        • Sad bitch would have been in ecstasy at the thought she was gonna get another sanction totted up to get more brownie points from her line manager. But then she found out she’d jumped the gun. LOL!

This is not a new thing for those pricks. Incompetence is a way of life for them.

They’re shitting themselves and out to save their own arses because they know they’re one step away from being in your shoes.

        • EveryLidlHelps

You’re not in Wigan JC are you? Is her name Christine? I had her a couple of years ago. Thought she was a clever bitch.

Gave me 9 jobs over the phone to apply for and next sign on said none of them had heard of me. When I showed her all the email applications she was fuckin’ dumbstruck. The liar hadn’t contacted any of them!

    • BTA; It is illegal to use intimidation to make someone who is not well, for example, to work in an environment that would create anxiety. Shame you cannot tape the bitch on your mobile?

  9. Hard Working People & Work Pays !!! Now they the hard working people are paying for it CUTS. So the Tory voters are now moaning about Work Don`t Pay. The only reason the Tory voters are moaning is to drown out the disabled people. Class System those at the top get heard [to a point].

    • How much work pays. I’m a single working mum last year I increased my hours. I saw none of the extra money I lost my council tax benefit and the rest went on increased rent contribution. Last month I was told as I had 5 year continuous service I was entitled to Either 5 extra days holiday or 5 days extra money. I would have seen none of the money so I took the holidays!!

  14. Benefits staff to strike over working conditions

    Glasgow Evening times – 13th July 2015

Benefits staff will strike for two days next week in a dispute over working conditions.

Public and Commercial Services union workers will walk out next Monday as staff demand action on lack of resources, unfair targets and staff shortages as they struggle to implement the UK Government’s Work and Pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith’s flagship Universal Credit policy.

The roll out has been plagued by delay and controversy and allegations of cash squandered on IT equipment.

The union complains of an “oppressive management culture” and staff shortages.

Several hundred staff in Glasgow will strike with colleagues in Bolton in Greater Manchester where the bulk of telephone and on-line Universal Credit work is conducted, on Monday and Tuesday.

  15. what you said was right, Johhny, but what do you advise people to do? Times are getting tough, and they are only going to get tougher. The great mass of people couldn’t give a flying fuck about anyone else. This mentality goes all the way back to Thatcher who said that there was no such thing as society.
With regard the Labour Party, as a political entity they are fucked. They are utterly bankrupt. What those wankers don’t seem to understand is that the more they try to ape the Tories, the more voters they lose; and ED Milliband. Whoever thought that he was ever electable needs to be sectioned and pumped full of psychotropic drugs. The bloke was utterly fucking useless, and the moment he loses, the first thing that he does is resign. During the time he was leader, thousands of people must have said that he was Electoral Shit, but he knew best and he ignored them; then when he fucks up big time, he just resigns. What a FUCKING INSIPID ABSOLUTE SACK OF SHITE WANKER!!! And now, because of him everyone on the jam roll is going to suffer.

    • Roger, it could have been slightly better if Labour had won. People on here just gave up by listening to the hype. Once again I AM FUCKING GUTTED THAT LABOUR LOST.

  16. New blue labour are not the opposition now. They are allies of the scum extreme right wing bastards in power.
It’s my belief they shouldn’t be allowed to use the word Labour in their name! Fuck them all!

    • tombo. of course Labour are not the opposition NOW. Why would they be?
They lost and have to sit on their arse for the next 5 years picking their noses. All the bastards, that slag them off, slag of their Leader cause he did not look the part. FUCKING PRETENTIOUS BASTARDS.

  17. BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

Why are the DWP continually attempting to pressurise me into doing things that I don’t want to do and which are not mandatory by law? This ceaseless nagging is nothing short of bullying & harassment. They won’t take NO for an answer. Just who the fuck do they think they are? It’s like the law no longer exists. IDS IS A DICTATOR. The UK is not a free country. There is no Democracy, no justice, no one to represent us. This is Tyranny.

    • BTA, Play them like a game of chess, their move, your move, so on and so forth. They are after all, THICK AS FUCK

      • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

Very true! Maybe I will think of something. Apart from suicide.

        • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

They are thick but inhuman, like robots. I could end up on daily signing and make sure my shoes have dog shit on them each day. Or release some fleas under her desk. Where do I get fleas?

          • No need to worry about finding fleas, all JCPs are already infested with vermin – jobcentre staff. Shoot the fucking lot of them and get real humans to work in those fucked-up places.

          • I’ve got a neighbour called Daz, his 1 bedroomed flat is infested with the blood sucking hideous little fuckers. If you want, I’ll get him to sort you out with some prime grade uber strength feline fleas. How many do you want, 10, 20??

        • BTA, Whilst sitting in the jobcentre I often think about how easy it would be to slap one of the bastards in the face. I don’t discriminate, man, woman or robot. They really are so close to us and the security guards are so far, far, away to intervene. In my dreams in my dreams. Nice though!!

          • One of the ugly security guards in my JCP is a fucking right cunt with me. I don’t even like the look of his face for a start. A right fucking moronic twat who struts around the building probably looking to start a fight with someone who had their money stopped for some illegal reason.

Every time I have to see the bearded little twat I want to knock his teeth out and put him in a coma for life.

            • I watched a JCP ‘Security guard’ pick on a guy who was waiting, like me, to use the phone. The guy was just waiting in the que. But the bollocks brain security guard thought he would pick a fight because someone was BLACK. Evil fucking bastards. Ku Klux Clan comes to mind.

      • I’m already one up against the jobcentre. Most of the applications I make on UJM are fake just to satisfy my weekly jobsearch. Hell, most jobs on UJM are fake or old jobs constantly reposted so why not do fake job applications myself. UK recruitment.net (whom often flood that crappy website) is the place to go when you want to make pretend job applications. I do it all the time whenever I see any job from UK recruitment.net advertising my sort of work in my local area.

        • Hey Fen, we could set up a business helping the jobseekers ‘fake’ applications. Its got to be easy. We don’t charge anyone (unless their loaded) and have a good laugh at the same time as making sure no one gets sanctioned. I have time on my hands and am willing to fuck JCP over.

          • UK recruitment.net ( a right fucked-up dodgy agency that I have extensively delved into via companies house website – and is run by just one person using a mail-drop address in Glasgow, and reposts every job going from totaljobs.com) is the one to use to cheat and fuck up UJM job activity recording.

            • Fen, I am up for it. I have time on my hands.

            • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

But I do apply for real jobs every week, several per fortnight, Pickers, Packers, Warehouse, Production, Operatives, Assistants, etc etc none fucking stop. I just don’t get them because I am unemployable, but that doesnt keep the bastards happy. They are never fucking satisfied and never will be.

              • I do apply for real jobs each day online, but if I can’t make up my weekly JCP quota as there are fuck all jobs available in my travel to work area then how else can I make it up to 20 jobs per week applied for??

                • Fen – if you’re on JSA then the legal test to satisfy Actively Seeking Work is ‘two or more steps’ usually interpreted as taking 3 or more steps, and that has to be reasonable to your individual situation – it can mean taking less than two steps in any given week, or none, if, for example there were no suitable jobs to apply for.

It seems that you’re already doing more than enough without having to provide fake evidence. And it’s good to remember that a step towards getting work can also be something like looking at the re-training options, or revamping your CV (for the umpteenth time!) The test is also a weekly test, not a daily one, so you don’t have to do something every day.

It’s the law that counts, not what’s on your Jobeseeker’s Agreement/Claimant Committment that counts – that’s just a guide really, you don’t have to do all of it, though it’s wise to use it for reference. You can find out more here:

                  http://www.cpag.org.uk/content/ask-cpag-online-how-can-you-avoid-jsa-actively-seeking-work-sanction

You can also find some very useful help on this matter on the Unemployment Movement website, but you’ll need to create an account there before you can access the forums.

                • Uk Recruitment net is a one-man band operation that is only operating on the internet and uses a mail-drop postal address registered to a Glasgow commercial rented office. This dodgy website steals jobs from totaljobs.com all of the time and passes them off as its own work.

Pass this around to other people that UK recruitment Net steals people’s personal details once they sign up to a registered contract with the website and that they can be liable to be fined if they break such contract with the employee terms and conditions.

The terms and conditions section is curiously not currently available when I checked it this morning…

  18. James Gasekll

Have you noticed the hatred some people show towards those who struggle with the benefits system. Of course, these are the very same people who have jobs so they don’t care if someone else has to struggle with having their benefits stopped by the JC or DWP. I heard one selfish guy say that all those on job seekers allowance should clean up dog shit for their benefits! I’m sure this is called hatecrime.

    • No your wrong. I work now but I went through the system as a single mum. I have respect for every one of the unemployed and hate what this country is doing to everyone

      • Kat, R. I work but still I go thought the system. I will never give up fighting for my fellow man and woman. By the way James, I clean up a lot of fucking crap as well.

    • The people who show hatred towards us un-employed should fuck off to another country. They really don’t see how hard it is to find work nowadays that isn’t a scam, fake, agency, zero-hours, or other bollocks.

Try using universal jobmatch to search and apply for jobs is a waste of time as every job posted on there goes to another recruiting website. No longer are there any directly posted jobs on UJM as no employer will touch that rotten-to-the-core website no longer after it was hosting fake, scam, mafia and porn jobs last year.

      • Fen, have you seen the duplicate jobs over and over and over again?
Different agencies same jobs. What a piss take. Why cant someone hack the bastards?????

        • Hi Bernadette. Yes, I seen loads of that re-posting and repeating stuff in my local area. I’ve also seen the same jobs (identical wording, job roles, salary) posted in more than one local town/city in my part of the UK.

And they say that UJM is a revolution in applying for jobs. Not if I see one job posted in more than one location and yet the job title and role is identical in each town. Something is truly fucked up here.

        • The next time you or anyone else goes onto UJM, press the F12 key on your keyboard (if on internet explorer 11). The F12 key when I pressed it (whilst logging into UJM) bring up a ‘debugger’ pop-up window…

          • **Part of the debugger console script used by universal jobmatch –

            • CARS Solutions UK has been previously seen under the name of Reestart and one other recruitment agency name. Currently, whoever runs this agency likes the name of CARS Solutions UK. It could change back to reestart tomorrow, next week or even next month, but that gem of a job description will stay the same regardless under the eventual name change.

            • I never knew until now that it was Safestyle UK spamming universal jobmatch with that job advert for more than one ”opportunity”.

Here’s something I have dug up from totaljobs.com with that same telephone number…

              http://www.totaljobs.com/JobSeeking/Product-Advisors_job63007900

            • “A fully expensed company car will be provided after your completion of training and following the probation period.” But what they don’t say is that you will never complete your ‘training’ or your ‘probation’ period. And in the meantime you will be expected to shell out for your petrol and for running costs for your own vehicle, neither of which these scammers have any intentions of refunding. Oh yeah, and you can forget about being paid as well! Why waste your time with this shit and UJM in general.

              • And the not so funny thing is if your work roach told you to apply for this shit and you pointed out that it was such an obvious scam, and politely told them not to waste your valuable job-searching time you would be sanctioned for 26 weeks for ‘refusal of employment’. That is how Monty Python/Kafkaesque the jobcentre is.

  19. Good post JV thank you!

There are political motives to dismantle the welfare system but there is also a socioeconomic fractionalisation, a cultural shift that does not grasp or is outright hostile to signing up to a social contract.

Could be said that it took the catastrophe and sacrifices of two world wars to forge the social contract of the post war welfare state.

  20. My Joke centre is holding a jobs fair tomorrow between 10am and 3pm. Guess who has to fucking attend that load of old bollocks knowing full well that NO proper company or supermarket will even be attending the event tomorrow and that because they won’t show up there won’t be any offering jobs with these companies.

Instead, It’ll be a load of dodgy local recruitment agencies running the event trying to off-load any old rubbish jobs in the pretence there is locally available jobs out there in my area. I’ll have a look around for a few minutes then piss off back home and do something more fucking useful like housework and some gardening in my back garden than giving away my CV to some fucked-up scammy agency.

The last time my town held a local jobs fair all we got was the Army recruiting stand, Anglian Water had a trade stand and every other trade stand was a fucking employment agency. Not one local factory/warehouse in my town, nor any of the supermarkets – Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, Aldi, LIdl was at that previous event.

As for tomorrow I really don’t hold out any prospect for real employment opportunities for me if all I get is every trade stand a fucking agency trying to hook me in with promise of real work (but with shit pay and wages only when they feel like it) and no proper direct employer such as any of the local factories/warehouses/shops/supermarkets here.

Even the jobcentre completed ballsed up my CV today when signing on after I had asked them to print a few copies off for me ahead of tomorrow. My CV looks a fucking mess with words running into each other, sentences all over the place, large gaps between sentences, dates missing and bits of my training/work history missing.

That’s the last time I ask fucking tosshead government numbnuts anywhere near my CV if they fuck about with it and make it look unusable to any employer. I certainly WON’T now take paper copies of my jobcentre CV with me tomorrow as I wanted to as it looks fucking shabby and amateurish and sentences fucked up big time. If I can find a proper typed out CV of mine I will take that one instead of a completely bollocked-up jobcentre CV.

  21. Fen avoid recruitment agencies like the plague. P.S have you checked out peopleperhour. com? Helped me out a little bit when times were tough. Fucking hell who am I kidding things are still the same!!!!!
    Nonetheless, check it out x,

    • Each time there is a jobs fair in my town, every employer bar the Army and Anglian Water trade stalls is a fucking employment agency. Yet the last recent jobs fair held in Peterborough, all the employers there were proper employers like Tesco, John Lewis, etc and not one single recruitment agency was attending that event.

My town always gets the crap and dodgy stuff when it comes to finding and sustaining employment. Recruitment agencies are a fucking plague where I live and need to be wiped out.

  22. The politicians do not necessarily want people to get jobs, they want us to stop claiming benefits and die. They would shoot us if they could.

    • Johannes, I could not agree more with your statement. Other than, they don’t want jobcentre staff either!!!!

  23. Job Offer – have you been out of work for 30 years !! We can help you get a job no problem just sign up to our cash cow company & we will do the rest leaving you in limbo about any payments. What you do is give us your NI number & we will run your NI & ID. You can not prove you are you anymore with DWP/ jobcentre Identity fraud.

  24. I got a job sending Cease & Desist letters. Don`t worry DWP/Jobcentre I you keep losing them I have taken photocopies of all of them.

and is the reason that there is no democracy as it has been sold off to gain power… ie persuading people to accept poverty is not a cure…true reassurance is action to end need….but being a sign post as opposed to weathercock still stands as a decent analogy, imo…and i know change cannot come fast enough and i weep…my opinion has long been shifted to the need for reliable supplies of vitality giving vitals of life for all….imv the snp have began too shake up WM… what do you want or need from this conversation…?

              • To these old ears a young lady with the politics of her Labour Party predecessors schemed with a sgian-dubh tongue.

The SNP have to decide if they are truly a left of centre Scottish national party or are a de facto socialist faction reshaping British politics by usurping the Labour Party. IMHO that socialist scot/brit political identity crisis makes them vulnerable, dealing with that identity contention is long overdue the more it is suppressed the greater the political rupture within the SNP.

                • overburdenddonkey

but what do you see as an alternative….? i know we the people must also keep the pressure up but not just on the snp per se…but to continuously ensure that who ever is in power ie control vitals of life, provides them when we’re in need, in fact they should have no say or command over our basic needs @ all….
the UK state, and indeed the EU, no longer require our productivity, so we must also ensure others ways of meeting our needs are in place, @ least a decent income via UBI….perma-culture and self build eco-villages etc… http://www.allofusfirst.org/

              • Fuck foodbanks

Capitalism over produces. The shops are over-flowing with food. A great quantity of perfectly good food is destroyed deliberately. Nobody, absolutely nobody, should be reduced to the humiliating and degrading position of having to go to a fucking ‘foodbank’ in the UK. Why the fuck do we just accept this shit and shrug our shoulders as if it is somehow normal. How the fuck can a human being walk past a supermarket that is not only over-flowing with food but their fucking bins are over-flowing with food on their 20 mile hike in the pouring rain on the way to their nearest ‘foodbank’. Does that not seem kind of odd, does it not jar, does not quite seem right. Just what the fuck is this shithole of a fucking country all about.

  31. “It is not true, yet, that tens of thousands of people have died due to welfare reforms, although the number of deaths is growing.”

Actually, 10,600 people died after “leaving ESA” as the DWP delicately put it (read: getting kicked off from ESA) in column 3 in their latest benefit-related death toll from 2011: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/223050/incap_decd_recips_0712.pdf

Many have since tried to get the DWP to release further benefit-related death counts occurring after 2011, but the DWP found such FoI requests “vexatious”.

The latest petition offers some hope: https://www.change.org/p/hm-courts-and-tribunal-service-publish-stats-showing-how-many-people-have-died-after-their-benefits-stopped

So sign it if you haven’t already.

But the DWP are not exactly rushing off their feet to release any more benefit caused deaths: http://thirdforcenews.org.uk/tfn-news/over-235000-signatures-yet-dwp-wont-release-benefit-related-death-figures?utm_source=change_org&utm_medium=petition

So yeah, what we have here is not just a class war. It is massmurder. And if we expanded the meaning of genocide then it would be just that – genocide. A modern form of eugenics where undesirables are simply left to die.

  32. “Even if jobs were abundant, and they are anything but, they are too ill to take them.”

Their not going to be employed anyway, they are often visibly unwell.People can be seen coming in the jobcentre telling staff they have just been told their ESA is stopped and they are told to claim JSA instead. If their not sanctioned in five minutes it will be a miracle as they look to ill to do anything let alone work.

  33. With the ‘jobs fair’ being held today in my pisstake jokecentre between 10am and 3pm, I found it really interestiung that my slot given to me by my jCP advisor to attend was shunted to between 1pm and 2pm – surely the worst time to attend the event as all of the employer trade stalls will have got the people they wanted to employ by 12pm.

I’ll fucking go when I want to and at a time most suited for me in case there was to be any real employer at the event and not some pisstake joke employer like one of the many recruitment agencies that infest my town and nick all the jobs available.

In any case, I doubt very much any real employer will be there at all, with the likes of Tesco or Morrissons or ASDA to say the least – but as I mentioned on here last night, a jobs event stuffed to the rafters with dodgy employer agencies desperate to grab as many workers as possible and pay them the absolute minimum wage they can get away with and only offer work as and when they feel like it.

Unless there are any real and direct employers today, I shan’t hang about and waste my valuable time by going from stall to stall asking about any work going as I know from being at a previous jobs fair it was a wasted game for me and I would have been better off at home instead making prank phone calls to the benefits office (whom deals with my meagre pittance) – not my JCP.

  34. Johnny, I agree with you one-hundred per cent. If we ignore the advances in technology, it’s quite clear that the lifestyle of the wealthy has hardly changed for hundreds of years. For the poorest, apart from some brief respite for a couple of decades after the second world war, things are pretty much the same as they have always been.

That means that despite one of the most progressive, socialist governments the world has ever seen (Atlee’s), eventually it all returns to business as usual. True socialism or communism (see dictionary definition of communism) can never be consistently achieved in this system, as the only aim of capitalism is to concentrate wealth in the hands of a fortunate few. Even a lesser aim of wealth redistribution is impossible. The only answer has to be revolution.

No matter how bleak things seem, the only things worth doing are to use every means at our disposal to draw attention to the plight of the poorest of us, to expose hypocrisy wherever it is found (and it is everywhere), and to argue for the ultimate rejection of this system and all that it stands for. If history shows anything, it’s that complacency is fleeting. The struggle continues.

Thank you for this article, and for everything that you write.

    • Jackie Bird is not the only one riding the BBC (Scotland) gravy. Just look at the very familiar faces on TV and radio that have been around for literally decades. Then they are the unseen ‘behind-the-scenes’ staff and multi-layered ‘management’. Incidentally, BBC Scotland also has the distinction of harbouring the longest serving continuity announcer in the UK who has clocked up more than25 years (Gillean McDougall) with most of the others not far behind, Morag Irvine and Graham Anderson coming a close second and third. Or Tony Currie who looks like a dinosaur he has been on the BBC payroll for so long. Lots and lots more examples but too numerous to mention. Maybe, not as familiar names as Jackie Bird but nonetheless hiding in the shadows riding the gravy train, Jackie is just more ‘in your face’ although, I reckon Jackie Bird has been gracing our screens for a lot longer than 25 years.

      • looking forward to retirement

Come to think of it…we have been listening to the same voices and looking at the same faces on our tvs and wirelesses for what must have been decades lol How do they get away with living it up at the licence payers expense for so long whilst the rest of us struggle by on zero hour minimum wage jobs. 45. So much for the shitty jobs fair at my jokecentreminus today. There wasn’t any national retail chains, no local shops, no local factories / warehouses or local trade businesses plying their wares to us jobseeking plebs having been told to attend by our nonce advisors.

All there was today was a handful of pokey job stalls offering bugger all in the way of any jobs and even then they were telling people interested in the jobs on offer to apply online (have they heard of paper application forms – these people running the event?). No real, proper jobs or training schemes where the money is to be had (retail/warehousing/factories/office jobs/care work) were to be gained today from this so-called jobs freebie event.

This jobs fair was the worse one I have ever had to go to. In fact, so bad and shitty I walked out of the dumb-fucked building barely five minutes being there and sodded off to ASDA instead to check out the latest CDs and DVDs on sale. Then went home to do some gardening work in my back garden.

There was fuck all for me in the way of proper jobs I am interested in, and that which I wanted on my fucked-up claimant commitment, so why the flying fuck was my advisor so keen to get me to drag myself there today in the hope I might get somewhere in the local jobs market? I could have joined the Army but they won’t have me at my age. I’m past their minimum recruiting age, so that is a bollocked-up idea no good I thought.

The JCP should in future stick to what they know best and carry out illegal JSA sanctions against us JSA plebs, and not go anywhere near a jobs fair ever again, after today’s waste of my fucking valuable time. I’ll be having words with my advisor the next time I see her and tell her to mind her business and let me get on with applying for jobs my way, which I know at the end of the day to be the best action.

        • The Committee is not automatically opposed to a benefits system that
incorporates conditionality. However, we share the view, expressed by
Citizen’s Advice Scotland, that sanctions must only be used as a last resort for those who have consistently and deliberately refused to engage with jobseeking requirements without good reason.

Unbelievable hypocrisy from the Committee – “last resort” straight from the mouth of IDS, since when did a SP Committee take its orders from Citizen’s Advice Scotland.

Conditionality is the problem support for that “last resort” destroys any credibility the SP Committee may have had concerning welfare.

          • overburdenddonkey

well that gets to the nub…better than, is simply not right….no sanctions, no conditionality, and a 40% increase in payments is the only justice…

          • Northern Powerhouse

It also destroys any credibility the SNP may had concerning welfare, and any credibility the Scottish Parliament may have had concerning welfare.

The Scottish Parliament’s tacit approval of the uttermost barbarism that is inflicted on the most vulnerable under “conditionally” and “last resort” sanctions is a brutal kick in the teeth to the rotting bodies of David Clapson (RiP)and the millions of other victims of the DWP who have now taken up residence in the DWP Cemetery, and who all have one thing in common – they were all sanctioned as “last resort for consistently and deliberately refusing to engage with jobseeking requirements without good reason.”

The Scots have been conned. There would be no improvement to the barbaric system of “conditionality” and “last resort” sanctions in an “independent” Scotland. In fact, it would probably be a lot, lot worse! Be careful of what you wish for!

Shame on the Scottish Parliament; Shame on the SNP; Shame on Citizens Advice Scotland; Shame on Wee Nicola; Shame on Wee Mhairi and the rest of the SNP cohort sat at Westminster. They can all go to Hell!

            • overburdenddonkey

we’ve not been conned…but the sanctions system goes way beyond what anyone could describe as being reasonable (reflective)…say payments were @ decent level of £140/wk and a sanction of last resort was @ max £30/wk, then many would accept this, as being reasonable..that it’s not reflective, is why i believe sanctions and conditonality should be ended…

                obd
“Vote “YES” for an end to sanctions – GUARANTEED” rang out the Referendum posters and leaflets. Conned?… 😉

It is a good point though that sanctions are a disproportionate deduction from an already inadequate level of benefits. Is is all relative as Einstein would say: If JSA was £1,000,000 a week and a sanction was £1,000 would you go along with that? 😉

              • Its a SNP con of conditionality overburdenddonkey what ever way you read it.

Shame on Citizens Advice Scotland claiming to represent scots claimants while upholding the “last resort” agenda, is there not a funding conflict of interest.

Conditionality in social security is the invitation to coercion and slavery maybe it is time for the SNP to put the money where their mouths are – compensating sanctioned Scots £ for £ and/or a Scots povery bounty that would double up JSA.

Tell me about it!

‘£2.3billion Jobseekers Allowance. £2.86billion pension credit. £3.62billion in housing benefit. £2.83billion Income Support and Employment and Support Allowance.

As the welfare debate is spun by this government, these are the figures you will rarely hear.

These are the estimated amounts unclaimed last year by people who are perfectly entitled to claim benefits – including disabled and unemployed people, carers and pensioners.

According to figures quietly released last month by the Department for Work and Pensions, the total amount unclaimed is likely to be between £11.6bn and £13.23bn a year.’

    • Claiming JSA is an intrusive process which entails civil servants demanding to know every last detail of you personal and financial circumstances. And it is for this reason that a lot of people just live of their savings, partners earnings or other means rather than submit to the whims of the jobcentre. I have personally done this and I know of many others who have done similar. So, that in itself is ‘unclaimed JSA’ and no doubt a sizeable amount.

The house, designed by professor Phil Jones of the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, costs no more than the average price of social housing to build, and was designed as a prototype for the UK Government’s commitment to zero-carbon housing and a new house standard of energy efficiency.
However, the UK Government dumped both of those commitments in March of this year, claiming it was not cost effective.

Problem is George, most people on this site decided not to vote Labour or not to vote at all. And before anyone gives their penny worth, Labour was never ever this bad. I am fucking gutted Labour never got in.

  83. Labour Established the Welfare State and the National Health Service

It is the Tories who have Undermined this Helped by the Zombielike

Tell me about it!

  84. It Angers Me the Apolitical Zombieism of too Many

There Needs to be Demonstrations Calling for Welfare Benefits to
be Increased Full Housing Benefit Defended and to Scrap the Bedroom

Min wage shifts 6 – 2. I have no transport & would be expected to walk 1 hour+ in all weather over an hill the size of a fucking mountain. I’d have to get up around 3.30am & leave home at 4.30am. Silly bitch Work Coach/dole clerk asked me if I can ride a bike. Get real. I’m in my 50s not fit & havent ridden a bike since I was 15.
