Fuck Sotheby’s, Fuck The Rich, Let’s Take The Class War To Their Front Doors

sothebys-protestWalking through Mayfair you would not believe that this could be a country where the poorest are abandoned to survive on just a few pounds a day.  Mayfair screams money, and there the rich play openly, driving their sports cars, holidaying in luxury hotels and sitting outside expensive restaurants whilst a few hundred yards away people bed down in shop doorways.

Of course the people working in those restuarants and hotels do not share in this vast wealth – most are working for a minimum wage that will not even pay for the basic necessities of life.  These people do some of the hardest work in society, working long hours for fuck all, cleaning up the shit and detritus of the rich.  And after Wednesday’s budget they will be made even poorer to pay for a huge inheritence tax cut for the children of millionaires.

At Sotheby’s auction house in the heart of Mayfair, billionaires bid for scrappy pieces of art, spending more on trinkets than most families will ever earn in their entire lifetimes.  Yet the cleaners and porters who work there do not even get decent sick pay, and four of them were just sacked for complaining about it.  The rich, and the lackies like Sotheby’s that serve them, treat the poor with utter contempt, as if the only purpose of these living, breathing human beings is to generate them ever more wealth that all, ultimately, comes from the work we do.

In the past during periods of such grotesque inequality the rich lived in terror, hidden away behind locked doors, praying that their guards and servants did not slit their throats as they sleep.  Yet now they flaunt their fortunes for all to see, laughing and braying in the London sun as they boast about their property portfolios and bark orders at those they consider beneath them.  There is no indignity too great that it cannot be inflicted on the plebs, the chavs, or whatever they are fucking calling us this week.

The class war is real, it is destroying our lives and they will take everything unless we start to fight back.  There should be no comfort for millionaires whilst  children go hungry –  the rich should not be permitted to eat and sleep and enjoy their pampered lives as if everything is as it should be.  This has gone on for far too long, and it could be stopped in a heartbeat if we re-learn to act collectively on the scale that is required.

So fuck elections and get out on the streets.  Advance to fucking Mayfair, starting this Wednesday, and support the sacked cleaners who lost their jobs for daring to raise their voices.  Join Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) earlier in the day and say Balls to the Budget.  Come to the Fuck Parade in Camden on Saturday and fight back against rampant gentrification.  Wherever there is trouble run towards it, because it is time to rediscover our pride and show our strength and our rage.  There is fucking more of us than them.  Let’s start to make sure they know that.

Disabled People Against Cuts are gathering outside Downing Street at 10.30am on Wednesday July 8th, full details at: http://dpac.uk.net/2015/06/wednesday-8th-june-at-westminster-and-online-balls-to-the-budget/

The protest demanding the re-instatement of the sacked Sotheby’s workers is on the same day, meet outside the United Colours of Benetton, at Oxford Cicus from 5.30pm or head to Sotheby’s at 34-35 New Bond Street, London W1A 2AA, more info at: http://www.uvwunion.org.uk/upcoming-events/2015/7/8/shame-on-sothebys-reinstate-the-sothebys-4

In the meantime everyone is piling on Sotheby’s on twitter @Sothebys and their facebook page.

Class War’s anti-gentrification Fuck Parade is meeting outside Camden Tube at 7pm on Saturday 11th July, info at: https://www.facebook.com/events/1476014982689696/

If you are outside London or can’t make these protests please help by sharing, tweeting and blogging about them.  Feel free to post details of protests around the UK in the comments.

  1. Sorry Johnny, there’s a difference between standing up for the disenfranchised and trying to stir up hatred towards the ‘rich’ – many of which aren’t even that rich to begin with. The inheritance tax levy is entirely right, £1m is not that much (in comparison to the true parasites in our society, that is) and will most likely have been hard earned, all while having tax applied to it during the person’s lifetime. If you’re going to target people, target the bankers and corporations that got us into this mess and refuse to show any regret or compassion. The middle classes are already paying more than their fair share, but I guess you and certain other socialists see them as the easier targets. Kind of how the middle classes and the government see the poor and working classes as the easier target than the mega-rich.

Stick to reporting facts on unemployment etc, these opinion peaces just come across as jealous and bitter playing the appeal to emotion in order to engender liberal guilt. You do a good service when you keep things empirical, blogs like these though are just whiny and embarrassing.

    • £1m is not that much eh, think you’re on the wrong side mate.

    • I think you have read into this what you choose to and not what Johnny is actually saying. The class was is not nor ever has been a war raged on the rich by the poor, rather the other way round. Im assuming you are not truly poor, may be an incorrect assumption however.

As we can all see from the ‘progressive’ policies of the Tories, they started with the poor but are also attacking the lower middle classes. The super rich do live lives of obscene luxury whilst being waited on by those at the bottom of the economic ladder, who are increasingly expected to and/or coerced and blackmailed into working harder for less whilst their working conditions and rights are stripped away along with their pride and dignity. The fact that these cleaners have been sacked for attempting to voice their opinions, should I think be the issue most important here. Why does this not concern you?

The super rich, the corporations, corrupt politicians are all waging war on the poor and the middle classes and have been doing so covertly for many years. Only now, they they are able to do it in a far more overt way, having propagated, brainwashed a substantial section of the population, and the media into believing their poisonous rhetoric propaganda and often blatant lies.

I am a non violent person, however, I am enraged at the inhuman treatment of the most vulnerable in our society as well as the treatment of the working poor and the middle classes.

Unless we all unite and stand together in a united front against such tyrany, then our human rights will be lost forever.

The powers that be are slowly but surely putting in place measures to make protesting an illegal act or even worst, curtailing the possibility of people even being able to meet openly. Are not our public spaces being secretly sold off to private corporations etc? Their main tactic to do so is divide and rule and creating Fear.

I see no real evidence that the richest in our society care one hoot about those less fortunate who are suffering when It would cost them so little and actually would make them feel more human and less obsessive about consuming or boasting about how much wealth they are managing to accumulate? Where are their voices in all this. Well I agree with Johnny, many are sipping tea in cafes and resturants in places like Mayfair, many never having had to suffer financial restraints, let alone trying to survive impoverished existances.

If companies such as the ones mentioned in Mayfair by Johnny, really had a conscience, or any moral fibre they would treat their employees or workers with respect and place far more value on the good work they do.

Can you imagine one of these people having to clean their own toilet?

        loo
yep, spot on, you and j v..

      • Outraged from Turnbridge Wells

We caught something on the Travel Channel the other day while we were channel -hopping. Extreme yachts it was called. The gap between the rich and poor is nothing short of nonsense!

    • The whole system whereby the rich get richer and fuck over the poor can not function unless it is propped up by a middle class. These smug, sans culottes as they were known in France, are pandered to by ruling politicians, to blur the contrast between the super rich and poor. They are ‘adverts’for a consumer driven populace, and a lifestyle that many aspire to. The ruling elite know this and keeps the attention off themselves. We dont want ‘Social mobility’, they can shove that up their arse, we want to eradicate the need for it.

      • That’s true, but now the ruling 1% have more or less finished with us, they are going to go after the middle classes next – in the next 15 years many of the jobs they do will be automated, and already many people doing ‘middle class’ jobs are part of the precariat, along with those who work in supermarkets and fast food joints and are often on zero hour contracts. Some of us would probably say that it serves them right, but that would be to side with the 1% in their game of divide and rule.

Right now we need to be showing solidarity with all workers, whether full-time employed, part-time, those on zero hour contracts and the unemployed as well as those affected by disabilities. Only with this kind of unity can we begin to start an effective challenge to the shit thrown at us by the 1% and their little helpers the politicians of all parties.

    • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

£1m not a lot? Fuck me. If I had £100k I’d never have to work again, never mind a million.

      • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

Sorry to sound “whiny and embarrassing” but I have 10 quid til a week next Friday. But a million quids not a lot?

        • Lottery Winner - the 'secret millionaire'

I know, but £1million quid, never mind £100K is a sum of money that is very likely to just ‘disappear’. Supposedly, you don’t feel ‘safe’ until you have at least £100 million. Lottery winners burned through a lot more than a million quid and ended back up in the dole queue; you wouldn’t need to be a rocket scientist to achieve this, it is very easily done.

And if you have ever been poor you will also feel poor. It is like people who go from the dole to a decently paid job; you will find that there cupboards are always stocked to the brim, they hold on to stuff they don’t need need ‘just in case’. I am loathed to quote him, but Jimmy Savile was spot on when he said: “A tenner is always a tenner”.

      • Merchant Banker

100K – it depends on you circumstances. It is a handy ‘nest-egg’ to have tucked away. But if you were on benefits its a different story. If the DWP didn’t know about it it would act as handy ‘cushion’ to survive sanctions etc. But it the DWP did know about it it would exclude you from benefits entirely under the capital rules. So you would be stuck with ‘capital’ of £100K. What are you supposed to do with that? You aren’t going to be able to buy much property with that – not even enough for the deposit on a rabbit hutch in London. If you invest it and received 7% per annum which is a good return and is achievable with slightly ‘riskier’ investments it would still only be £7000 a year to live on. £134 wouldn’t even cover your previous entitlement to say JSA, Housing Benefit and Council. Of course you could ‘dip into the capital’ to ‘top-up’ but this would also erode the returns on the capital. And the initial capital would eventually evaporate. Or maybe you could set up a successful business, but with £100K?! If you were dependent on £100K to live of you would just be paying for your own poverty with that amount of capital.

        • Merchant Banker

It goes without saying that if you could scrape by on such a small amount you would at least be free of the Jobcentre. But you would still, as we say, be: capital rich(ish) – income poor. You would need a lot for ££s. 1 million just might suffice if you were very, very careful and wise. But is is still hardly enough to buy a decent property and retain enough capital to generate a ‘decent’ income from. You also have to take into account the effect of inflation on your capital. If you are spending the investment gains you are in effect spending the capital because of inflation. So, you really need quite a large amount of capital if you want to enjoy a decent income without running out of money before you die. As Einstein would say: it is all relative.

          • Merchant Banker

Basically, if you are born without the resources i.e. poor and unless you win the lottery it is virtually impossible to ‘break thorough’ into financial independence. The ‘system’ ensures this and is deliberately designed to that intent. If you are born poor, you will live poor, you will die poor.

            • Will you go to heaven poor? Maybe the afterlife is for the rich only. The wealthy got monks to pray for them to ensure their place in the mystic realm

          • BOLLOCKS TO AUSTERITY

I reckon i could live on £100k until i retire in 14 yrs time.

            • 100K divided by 14 is only 7K a year. You could scrape through for 14 years providing you didn’t have any housing costs. it defo wouldn’t stretch over 40 years. 100K on you 18 birthday isn’t going to stretch to retirement. I think the point is that 100k is not as large a sum as it first seems especially if you are cut adrift from social security, not working, or otherwise earning and entirely dependent on it as your sole income for survival.

    • @Laszlo: Before accusing those below you of jealousy and bitterness, whey don’t you examine your own belief that somehow you deserve to be better off than others, that somehow your work is worth more than the person who cleans your local pub toilet, or the person who stacks the shelf in your supermarket? Scary, isn’t it? The idea that we are all equally worthy and deserving of respect, dignity, and the good living that comes from wealth? That nothing at all sets you apart from the rest of us except for your sense of entitlement?

£1m is not much? No, I suppose it isn’t to you. But it’s the difference between life and living death to those who just lost the ILF that enabled them to get to the toilet, and do something apart from watching the paint yellow on their sick room ceiling.

A miniscule fraction of it is the difference between feeding your child and watching them starve, to those who are about to lose Child Tax Credits. You’ve probably never been to a foodbank. Did you know you can’t keep going back? Most of them will only let you use them three times during the course of a year.

Be in no doubt here. If, when it gets right down the wire, you’ll spend your time defending what you’ve got (because you’ve “worked hard” for it, or whatever bollocks you use to justify it), rather than stand with the rest of us so that everyone can have an equal share in the privileges of human society and civiliation, then you are the enemy.

You say “whiny and embarrassing” as if that isn’t exactly how you sound with your “hard-earned” “tax applied” £1000,000.00 while poor people starve. Maybe you should listen to yourself.

  2. Protests are useless unless you have at least 100,000 people protesting. The best protests are disabled protests of the storming of parliament clashing with the mass media.

All these people that work on lower wages that voted Tory are the ones to “suffer” with the budget on Wed because their wages will be cut. What double standards that now the Tory voters are moaning about the Tories. The simpleton of politics can`t help you.

Disability is a Equality & Human Rights Issue. Not a political issue to demean oneself to even protest over human rights.

  3. Business Disability Forum

The Business Disability Forum is the UK’s national employers’ network specifically focused on the topic of disability. The Employers Forum on Disability officially became the Business Disability Forum on 1 October 2012. This was done to better reflect the role of the group as a bridge between disabled people and the world of business.

The group has about 350 members, including 100 multinational corporations, small and medium sized enterprises and public sector employers, employ approximately 18 per cent of the UK workforce. Members include employers from banking, education, health, broadcasting, telecommunications, manufacturing and retail sectors

    TRAINING:

The Business Disability Forum offers training courses and workshops on different aspects of disability management and confidence to the membership generally; it also tailors training to meet the specific needs of a particular organisation. Most courses are either free or discounted for Business Disability Forum members, while non-members pay the full training fee. Most of the trainers and presenters are disabled themselves. In 2010, nearly 1,500 people attended EFD training events.

Training methods vary. In addition to face-to-face training, the organisation offers telephone tutorials, expert speakers to events and online training – or a combination. One example of online learning is ‘Disability Confident’, developed in 2004 by Skill Boosters, a company specialised in inclusive learning, in partnership with the Business Disability Forum. Disability Confident is an interactive learning resource which uses case scenarios and activities as a basis of learning about best practice, legal obligations and how to maximise the access and contribution of disabled people as employees and customers.

Move beyond disability awareness to become disability confident

Would staff in your organisation know the right way to deal with a customer or colleague with a physical or visual impairment and be comfortable about doing so rather than feel awkward or embarrassed?

This learning resource provides the practical steps you need to take in order to serve disabled customers, and to work with disabled colleagues and staff.

  4. Through the suppression of wages, and attacks on benefits, the vast majority of the UK population is being systematically degraded into a ‘service class’ to satisfy the needs of an increasingly hubristic, super-rich elite. https://mpbondblog.wordpress.com/2014/09/28/the-financial-elite-is-now-totally-out-of-control/

”All in this Together ?” …. At best, a cynical lie

    • Loving the Jobs market.

The biggest attack on the living standards of the majority of U.K. citizens is the ever unquestioned open doors migration policy.
Without a never ending source of desperate hungry vulnerable workers to service minimum wage/black market jobs and keep wages low and living costs high, the lower classes would still have some clout.
Historically, the population maintenance of the working classes has always been encouraged by sitting governments via the building of social housing to enable workers a reasonable living standard and hence through affordable on both sides lifelong assured employment balance the N.I. contributions to pay the pension bill.(an ever increasing figure which dept has been passed on to ever further generations of tax payers by an unending list of governments).Indeed, every kid brought up in a council house who gets a degree was practically a ‘Loss’ to the system.(They will become self employed or start a business, leave the country, but what ever the smart ones do the first thing they will realise is that paye hrly employment is for Twats)
As it stands, nobody here will question the use of immigration as a tool by those they wish to challenge because they feel it would point the finger at the immigrants, despite the fact those blameless immigrants often rue the day they ever came and feel disillusioned, cheated and abused. Many leave with nothing but depts, nightmares and fresh grey hairs.
There will never be an end to the pool of exploitable human beings whilst this policy is in effect, and the purpose of the policy is to undermine You.
The unavoidable end result of unlimited third world immigration is a third world U.K.
      Until that is addressed you are just pissing in the wind;
chewing the fat_ wasting your keyboard strokes, time and effort.
Endlessly marching and complaining about your situation will hasten the change because your attention is in the wrong place.
You cannot claim any high ground whilst the hungry and poor of the world offer to do the shitty jobs, eat everything from the reduced shelf and live three to a room until they get social housing..
; you will be seen as lazy trouble making layabouts comparatively unworthy to these grateful slaves and nobody will give a toss if you march on an auction house.
If you wish to share the inheritance of your forebears earnt through 1000 yrs of civil and world wars, endless technological and social progression and countless lives spent from 12 to 65yrs of age with a nose to the grindstone?
;Move out of your house, bugger off to a 3rd world country and give all your remaining chattels to an orphanage.
When you are starving, you will probably see whats what.

This is why these protests turn out to be as potent as a bloke with a two inch wood boffing a woman whose muff has chucked out seven bastards. The protests don’t get the numbers because people are apathetic, only thinking of themselves until the Gauleiter IDS’s spotlight falls on them.

Shock dossier: Iain Duncan Smith’s department is trying to ‘fudge’ figures on welfare cuts deaths

The Tories are trying to ‘fudge’ figures on welfare cuts deaths in a shock dossier which claims they’re too ’emotive’, Mirror Online can reveal.

The news has prompted fury from campaigners, 220,000 of whom have signed a petition to find how many people died after being found fit for work.

Iain Duncan Smith’s department is waging a legal fight against a request for the figures, claiming it’ll reveal them in its own time.

Today Prime Minister David Cameron insisted the data “will be published and is being prepared for publication as we speak”.

Upmarket cars in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge torched ‘deliberately’

Police in Edinburgh have appealed for information after two cars were set on fire.

The fire service were called to Dean Terrace in the Stockbridge area at about 03:00 on Sunday.

The cars, a BMW 116d and a red Mercedes 220 CDI, were found to be well alight. Police believe the fire was deliberate.

No one was injured in the blaze but officers said they were “keen to hear” from anyone in the area who saw anything suspicious early on Sunday.

Det Con Douglas Mogg said: “Both cars have been completely destroyed by the fire, which appears to have been started deliberately.

“Witnesses in the area heard a man talking with a local accent at around 2:45am followed by a loud bang and then flames coming from the cars.

“I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of Dean Terrace around this time to please contact police on the 101 number or speak to any officer.”

Let’s get one thing clear the Tories and their rich friends agenda is to destroy any remaining rights the working class have.If you are poor or disabled then basically you are finished as the Welfare State is gone. You only have to look at the cull of the unproductive sick and disabled to realize something is really badly wrong in this country. It’s total fucking class warfare. If you are in any doubt about what direction the UK is going in then read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist. It shows you just how the working class are treated like whale shit by the rich.

Ultimately the Tory plan, with the help of parts of the media, is to eliminate the poor as they are not important. Anyone who is not classed as ”economically successful” by the government will be deemed as a threat and therefore will be targeted. Equally, the incurably ill, the physically and mentally disabled will be viewed as “useless” to society, and a threat to economic growth.

The Tory plan is to continue to cut and withhold benefits that consequently starve people, making them homeless and taking away any hope or fight they have left – as they are doing now. The Tories believe it’s easier to drive people to succumb to their illness or commit suicide so they cannot be blamed,or so they think.

You may think this is a bit over the top, but poor people are dying right now because of evil Tory policies. We need to act now before the shit really hits the fan. You may think that you are safe now, but down the line they have your name on their list. You have been warned.

Benefit cuts deaths: Revealed, how Tories are trying to ‘fudge’ figures claiming they’re too ’emotive’

The news has prompted fury after 220,000 people signed a petition to find how many people died after being found ‘fit for work’

But Mirror Online has seen a crucial document which exposes how the Department for Work and Pensions is set to avoid scrutiny.

Anna Soubry is on a mission to cheer up Sundays and her solution is shopping.
The small business minister has been out promoting the case for extending opening hours and sharing her recollection of what the seventh day used to be like ‘Chez Soubry’.
It was the most “miserable” day of the week and as far as she is concerned it was a myth that families came together on the day of rest.

no one should work on Sunday. After all, Cameron said we are a Christian nation, and shiny Dave surely cannot have been lying. He can’t have it both ways.

      • My only definite day off in the seventies was Sunday as most shops had to be closed. For some it was of course a day of Christian worship, but to most it was a day when you could do something different, and I used to look forward all week to Sunday, as it was my day out on my motorcycle. Lake District, North Yorkshire Moors or the Trough of Bowland being favoured places by many in north west England, where I was living at the time.

Now Sundays are just another day to go shopping for stuff that’s not needed and the exploitation of bullied workers paid abysmally low pay and
        crap working conditions.

Camelot, the company behind the National Lottery, has avoided millions of pounds in corporation tax by exploiting a legal loophole that HMRC failed to close.

The company saved an estimated £10m in tax in the last two years through interest on loans taken from its Canadian owner via the Channel Islands Stock Exchange. Its owner is one of Canada’s largest pension plans, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan board. The revelation comes as the National Lottery has doubled the price of its tickets to £2

Teachers’ is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors having reported $154.5 billion in net assets on December 31, 2014. It has an excellent track record for investment performance with an average annual return of 10.2% since inception.

Teachers’ owns and manages a diversified portfolio of Canadian and international assets. Through its fully owned real estate subsidiary Cadillac Fairview, Teachers’ owns properties that include the Toronto-Dominion Centre, Toronto Eaton Centre, and the Rideau Centre in Ottawa. Through its private equity investment arm Teachers’ Private Capital, Teachers’ owns or has had interests in companies such as Easton-Bell Sports, Helly Hansen, Munchkin, Plano and Shearer’s Foods.

  33. There are three kinds of rich and only the first has my respect and should be allowed to keep their wealth in my view. First there are those like Taylor Swift, who became rich through their talent and providing stuff that people want. Good for them.

Then there are those who got rich through semi monopolies, inherited wealth, or selling people what they can’t do without, like housing. Whilst they may be legal, I don’t like them.

Then there are those who just stole or extorted their wealth. Jail them.

A joint directive by the former chief medical officer of the DWP, BILL GUNNYEON, in liason with DAME CAROL BLACK who met the insurance industry mant times before doing away with the sick note, the start of the rot………………………….

          25. UnumProvident would propose that IB should be retained for those disabled people who are genuinely incapable of undertaking any work whatsoever. The remainder should be transferred to a form of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) which is sufficiently flexible to recognise that they have limited capacity to work. JSA claimants are required to look for work, and indeed are supported in that process by JCP. This simple administrative move sets the expectation of a return to work both for the individual and also for potential employers.

          13. UnumProvident is actively engaged with the Government, policy-makers and large employers to share best practice and to see where our systems and approaches might be applied more widely. We are currently working with the Department of Work and Pensions on this, and have had discussions with officials in HM Treasury and the Prime Minister’s office. We have met with officials to help better understand the nature of the IB casebook, and to discuss how our commercial experience and expertise might be more widely applied. In addition, we will shortly be supporting the National Employment Panel in its work on the New Deal for Disabled People through a secondment of one of our senior managers.

but if you look at the meaning of the word, “THEFT”, it states this:

              Definition of “theft”
              1 Basic definition of theft.

            6. Consequently, UnumProvident believes that the high numbers of people on IB do constitute hidden unemployment. Indeed there are over one million disabled adults who do not have a job but who want one, most of whom we would contend from our commercial experience, would be able to do some work. This group at least must surely constitute hidden unemployment.

I didn’t think you were joking. That quite hefty box of electronics in my chest cost over £17 grand but my procedure is routine. It does what it says on the tin – it re-synchronises and paces my heart whether I’m elated or (usually) pissed off and I’m normally unaware of it. However I wasn’t subjected to a psychological examination to determine whether I had the correct the attitude, it was a case of “you need cardiac resynchronisation therapy” and that was it – cardioverter/defibrillator duly implanted.

Fucking hell they will have job advisors in every hospital soon. so what’s all this stuff about rest aiding recovery??

              • @bobchewie
You do need to rest after a surgical procedure or serious illness, in my case it’s six weeks after implantation of my device, the same as recommended in the case of any heart surgery or a heart attack. The hospital gave me a timetable – during the first fortnight I had to do as little as possible and even have my groceries delivered. Now I’m in the middle of my recovery period so can do a lot more, but I can’t indulge in anything strenuous until I go to clinic and be cleared, another month. So still no swimming for me.

  43. The £93bn handshake: businesses pocket huge subsidies and tax breaks

    The Guardian – Tuesday 7 July 2015 21.00 BST

Guardian’s analysis reveals that hidden subsidies, direct grants and tax breaks to big business amount to £3,500 a year given by each UK household

Taxpayers are handing businesses £93bn a year – a transfer of more than £3,500 from each household in the UK.

The total emerges from the first comprehensive account of what Britons give away to companies in grants, subsidies and tax breaks, published exclusively in the Guardian.

Many of the companies receiving the largest public grants over the past few years previously paid little or zero corporation tax, the analysis shows. They include some of the best-known names in Britain, such as Amazon, Ford and Nissan. The figures intensify the pressure on George Osborne, the chancellor, just as he puts the finishing touches to his budget. At the heart of Wednesday’s announcement will be his plans to cut £12bn more from the social welfare bill.

Yet that sum is less than the £14.5bn given to companies in direct subsidies and grants alone.

In 2012-13, the public gave a £20bn subsidy to private investment. The construction industry gained more than £7bn in exemptions on new housing and land duty. “””

      • “”””• Government procurement from the private sector: £15bn Capita, Atos, G4S and Serco alone received £4bn worth of public-sector contracts in 2012-13. While procurement provides the public with services, it is not always about securing value for money for taxpayers, as the business secretary at the time, Vince Cable, acknowledged in 2012. He said: “There is a role for the government using procurement in a more strategic way.” “””””

      • geoff reynolds

And to put this debate in context, let’s consider a couple of pertinent facts.

The latest poverty figures showed that the number of people in ‘disabled households’ who were living in ‘absolute poverty’ rose by a shocking 300,000 in one year. Thirty per cent of households where there is at least one disabled member are now living in poverty.

In a recent study of out of work disability benefits, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said, “Public spending forecasts for these disability benefits in 2018–2019 project them to be at their lowest level as a share of national income since the late 1960s.”

…………AND NO A MENTION OF THOSE THEY KILLED

When the Work Capability Assessment was extended to all claimants, ministers confidently predicted it would lead to a huge fall in the caseload Ms Pickles refers to. The rigorous process would weed out the malingerers, which they believed existed in large numbers. Frequent references were made to people ‘parked’ and ‘languishing’ on sickness and disability benefits. Many were fit to work but had simply stopped trying, the reformers implied.

However, with over five million assessments having been carried out, at great cost to the taxpayer and great stress to sick and disabled people, the numbers of claimants have not changed significantly. The latest figures available from the DWP for the outcomes of reassessments of existing claimants show:

    – 95 per cent of claimants were entitled to Employment and Support Allowance.

    – Within this, 7 per cent of claimants were placed in the Work Related Activity Group

    – 88 per cent of claimants were placed in the Support Group; and

    – 5 per cent of claimants were assessed as Fit for Work.

  61. Warrington dad wins legal battle over disabled son’s loss of benefits while being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

    Liverpool Echo – 8th July 2015

Craig Mathieson challenged the Government’s rule that sick children stop receiving disability living allowance after 84 days in hospital

A Warrington dad won a landmark legal battle against the Government after his disabled son was stripped of £7,000 of benefits while being treated at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Craig Mathieson took Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith to court after his five-year-old son Cameron, who had cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, lost his disability living allowance (DLA) in October 2010 – two years before the youngster died.

Today five judges at the Supreme Court backed Mr Mathieson’s argument that this decision was “grossly unfair” and ruled Cameron should have carried on being paid DLA.
