Boycott Workfare Week of Action 25 April – 2 May: No workfare! No sanctions! Whoever wins we will resist!

Boycott-Workfare-action

From Boycott Workfare

As the general election campaign gets underway we are already seeing politicians calling for more of the same policies. More workfare. More sanctions. Yet we know that these policies have been a total disaster. It is shameful that workfare and sanctions are supported by all the main political parties. This is why we are holding a week of action in the week before the election. We need your help to expose and challenge workfare and sanctions policies and the political lies that underpin them.

Workfare undermines paid jobs and wages and results in sanctions. It does nothing to improve the chances of people finding a job and exploits those forced to carry it out. Last year over half a million people had their benefits sanctioned. The number of benefit sanctions imposed by the DWP now exceeds the number of fines imposed by the courts. People are being left with nothing for up to three years. There is now overwhelming evidence of the harm being caused by sanctions. Sanctions are damaging the health of claimants and leading to hunger, homelessness and deaths.

Your actions have already had a huge impact in challenging these policies. Dozens of organisations have withdrawn from the schemes following public pressure. Over 500 voluntary sector organisations have now signed the Keep Volunteering Voluntary agreement to say they oppose workfare and sanctions and will not be involved. 25 councils have also said they will boycott the schemes. All this means it is getting harder and harder for the government’s private providers to find workfare placements. Hundreds of placements have been cancelled and your actions have made a real difference.

The week of action is a chance for everyone who opposes workfare and sanctions to demand an end to these cruel policies. However you can contribute join us to take action from 25 April – 2 May:

  • Join in with online actions throughout the week!
  • Ask charities you support to sign the Keep Volunteering Voluntary agreement!
  • Speak out! Tell those promoting workfare and sanctions what you think of their policies!
  • Hand out our know-your-rights leaflets at your local jobcentre!
  • Plan actions at a workfare exploiter near you!

Remember to let us know what you plan so we can help to publicise it!

“TELLING LIES IS NATURAL FOR THE DWP”

    11 February 2015
    QUESTION;

    Dear Tom Evans,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request which we received on 2 February 2015.
    You asked:

‘Please provide a copy of any policy or guidance to assessors at work capability assessments
(WCAs), directing assessors to do either, or both, of the following:-

    ANSWER FROM THE DWP;
In response to Q1, there is no policy or guidance of this nature for assessors.

    …………….THE TRUTH;
The following text is an extract from the latest version of the WCA handbook. This is to be used by HCP to make sure they carry out WCA correctly.

To use the DWP own words “This guidance is for healthcare professionals who undertake Work Capability Assessments on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.”

“4.1.4 Taking of Notes during an Assessment by Claimant or Companion
From time to time you may encounter a situation where the claimant is accompanied by a companion and either the claimant or companion may wish to take notes during the assessment.
Persons who are entitled to be in attendance are always entitled to take notes. This is because it is for their own purposes and not an official record of the process.
To attempt to deny the right to do so is likely to be contrary to Human Rights legislation.
To request a copy of the notes is unlikely to be helpful – it will place you in the position where you will be obliged to review the notes and comment on their reliability.
However, you should record in the medical report, the fact that notes were being taken. The following warning should also be given and the fact documented in the report. LiMA will offer the phrases as an optional addition.
For any handwritten report, on the rare occasions when this is necessary, the report should be annotated on the front cover.
The form of words you should use has been clarified on legal advice. Please replace any copies of existing desk aids you hold with the one incorporating the following form of words:
“Where notes are taken by you, we consider it of assistance to both myself, as the examining HCP, and yourself to point out the following:
    1. It is your right to take notes for your own use and benefit.
    2. The notes will not be included in the Report I make save for the fact that notes were taken and further, they are not accepted by myself or the DWP as an official record of this assessment.
    3. If the notes are subsequently produced at any time for any purpose, such as part of an appeal process, I the Examining HCP, my employer and the Dept of Work and Pensions reserve all rights to challenge anything in the notes in the event we are asked to comment on the content of the notes at a future time.
    4. You are free to use your notes as you choose but if you chose to publicise the notes (other than in connection with correspondence with the DWP or under any appeal procedure) I would ask that you do not publicise my name.” ”

“You must have noticed that whenever anyone asks the dwp about claimant deaths, they try to hide the evidence by stating they cannot breach claimant confidentiality”

In this freedom of information request from Anita Bellows, Anita asks the DWP, how many of those people that died and were investigated, had been sanctioned?

…………………..Strangely the DWP have gone quiet and now need more time before they reply.

    Dear Anita,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received on 07 February
    2015 . You asked:-

Esther McVey confirmed during the Work and Pensions Committee
session on the 4th of February 2015, that DWP conducted 49 peer
reviews after deaths of claimants, but Chris Hayes said that ‘we have
found no particular case where, as a direct result of sanctions alone,
that has led to someone being in that situation’.

    ncedocument/work-and-pensions-committee/benefit-sanctions-policy-
    beyond-the-oakley-review/oral/17970.html
I would like to know how many claimants out of the 49 peer reviewed
cases had received a sanction. This includes previous sanctions and
sanctions at the time of their death.
And if it is within the cost limits, the number of sanctions for each
    claimant will also be useful
    .

It is occasionally necessary to extend the 20 working day time limit for issuing
a response. In the case of your request, I need to extend the time limit
because the information requested must be considered under one of the
exemptions to which the public interest test applies. In this case it is section
    36. This extra time is needed in order to make a determination as to the
    public interest.

Accordingly, I hope to let you have a response by 07 April 2015.
If you have any queries about this letter please contact us quoting the
    reference number above.
    Yours sincerely,

Claimants can request that their assessment is recorded. However, there is no legal
right to an audio recorded assessment and it should be noted that neither DWP nor our
Supplier has a legal obligation to provide an audio recording service or equipment.

  6. Reblogged this on Christopher John Ball and commented:
Workfare is unjust – that ‘should’ go without saying but we sadly live under a regime with the intent to drive down wages. Workfare is also an indicator of what David Cameron intends in regard to cuts to public services. People will still want certain things done and the Conservatives intend to make up for the staff losses with workfare. For those who support workfare, ask yourself. When it comes to my annual pay review why will I be viewed as being worth more than £0? If the person next to you is doing your job but on workfare you can be sure that that is an indicator that YOU will not be in a job for long.

  7. they all fucking lie

just wait till universal credit comes in for every one! you will have bigger things to worry about than trying to stop workfair.

just a reminder that labour does not want to nor claims to represent us… http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rachel-reeves-says-labour-does-not-want-to-represent-people-out-of-work-10114614.html the keir hardie labour party who built it’s very foundations on the organizing of downtrodden/unemployed people…

    • Rachel Reeves MP –
“We are not the party of people on benefits. We don’t want to be seen, and we’re not, the party to represent those who are out of work,” she said. “Labour are a party of working people, formed for and by working people.”

With the ideological outlawing of the unemployed Rachel Reeves is being true to the political left hardworking families only principle.

    • Does anyone know the real link to the interview of Reeves. If you can find it you will see that this has all been taken out of context (as usual) and her actual interview was totally different to how she comes across. I don’t particularly like the woman, but I get so angry when the whole interview is stripped away and just this paragraph is printed by msm!

Found it – NOW READ THE FULL INTERVIEW PEOPLE!!!

  11. If Miliband had a spine Reeves would be sacked and he would say Labour is the party of the welfare state and proud of it. It is the welfare state that made Britain a modern, civilised country where the poor were treated with dignity, education was available for all, jobs were not slavery, old age was not poverty and medical treatment was free on demand. It is the welfare state that raised quality of life for all. Labour should be proclaiming it as their greatest achievement and pledging to rebuild it.

Annoying to then discover this earlier video:

Watched another guy righly annoyed that he’d been sanctioned through MWA, but then also complaining about those chosing not to attend (see pt3):

Wish them both all the best, I truly do, but God these views are frustrating to hear!

      • Giles Wilderbeast

I guess the job centre and I D Smith, Festor McVey and the rest of the cnuts regards anyone signing on as being “owned” by the DWP. Like cattle, or sheep, or “stock”… or slaves. And they can send you, as their “stock” to work (for nothing) to whatever company they like. Apart from that just tell the dirty barstewarts to go take a flying fcuk! I mean if they’re going to sanction you anyway whatever you do then the least you can do is tell the filthy nazis what you really think about em!

revolution has to come from the young when more are treated like this youngman…then things might change..if the guy reads this dont accept that woman “is nice just doing her job”..they are not nice they are complicite

Not again! Why does Ed always look odd when he is trying to look ‘normal’?

  14. The way to get rid of austerity, workfare, bedroom tax, benefit cuts to the poor in or out of work, total loss of state pension the sole food money in old age, is to use the power the poor have more now than in a generation on Thursday 7 May.
    http://www.anastasia-england.me.uk

The poor now outnumber all other voters, especially in England.

A group of parties reaching the threshold of 323 MPs gets to rule a majority government.

Neither Tory nor Labour on their own or even with a partner will gain this number of MPs, in this most predicted severe hung parliament.

The SNP and Plaid Cymru will be a fair few of the required, but natural allies to these are, in England:

    – Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC)
ex Labour MPs and councillors who left or were expelled for being against austerity cuts, and trade union officials, all as the 122 and rising MP candidates.

    – Mebyon Kernow of Cornwall
Tory and Lib Dem sitting MPs have single figure majorities, and
the poor now outnumber all other voters in Cornwall.

    – Class War
    Double dole and pension.

The example of the Suffragists/Sufrragetes, who petitioned and campaigned for 100 years to no effect to Tory or Liberals (now called Lib Dems) MPs, shows nothing else will change government,
but changing who is in government.
    http://www.anastasia-england.me.uk

A coalition world-wide has worked successfully with more than 2 parties in it.

    • Without wishing to be rude, I don’t really understand what this website is.

      • Oh I am pleased to get some feedback on me little website, thank you.

PARTIES FOR POOR VOTERS IN 2015

My intention, as a voter and victim of welfare and pension reform, is to inform the mass of poor voters – numbering tens of millions of us:

        – new party logos and
        – names of parties to vote for,

        – of parties getting nil media coverage,

        – to recognise on the ballot sheet

        – to put your pencil cross in the box by the side of,

        – in the polling station informed to you on your poll card

        – for the general election on Thursday 7 May of the national UK giovernment called Westminster down in London.

THE POOR NOW OUTNUMBER ALL OTHER VOTERS

Because the poor, in or out of work, of all ages, have more power than in any other election this year.

        Why?

VOTING AREAS WHERE THE POOR COULD VOTE DIFFERENT AND MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

There are voting areas called marginals, which are:

        – where the sitting MP has a lower majority that put him or her in the job as MP,

        – than the huge number of poor voters in that voting area, called a constituency.

        Especially in England.

HOW A GROUP OF PARTIES COULD SAVE THE POOR?

Each small party will not reach the threshold of 323 MPs on their own, to form the UK government.

But there is a way that voting these new parties will bring about secure and majority government that can rule,
by a group of parties reaching 323 MP threshold.

        THE BIG PARTIES ARE SMALL

The predicted most severe hung parliament this year is because neither Tory nor Labour will get sufficient votes to rule government, even with
        1 partner party.

This is what is called a minority government, and means laws will have a hard time in getting passed by the government.

        THE SMALL PARTIES ARE BIG

As the poor can vote different this year, they can bring into Westminster new MPs that will be naturall allies to Labour and change Labour utterly back to the party it was.

THE CELTS ALREADY OFFER A FAIR FEW OF THE NEEDED 323 MP THRESHOLD

The Scottish SNP and Welsh Plaid Cymru are proper left wing parties that focus on helping the poor.

        BUT NOT ENOUGH

But Labour / SNP / Plaid Cymru with the 1 Green coalition, in support and confidence manner, will still be insufficient to not be just equal to the
Tory / DUP / UKIP coalition.

        DUP is the Ulster party.

NEED MORE DIFFERENT PARTIES IN ENGLAND

So voting different this year, gives the poor the best chance in a generation to bring new MPs into the UK Westminster government down in London.

Multi party coalitions work all over the world very successfully.

We are just not used to them in the UK, because we have not had the need.

We just have had one party in government and one party in opposition throughout our history.

PEOPLE HAVE STOPPED VOTING FOR THESE PARTIES

We will never again get enough people out to vote, of all income levels, to bring about majority one party government again in the UK.

MULTI PARTY BEYOND JUST TWO – STABLE GOVERNMENT

So what my little website tries to inform, is a means for the poor to recognise parties not being given any media coverage at all.

And for me personal website to inform the poor that they have more power in voting than they have ever had, if they vote different.

LABOUR NEEDS LEFT WING PARTIES TO BRING IT BACK TO IS ORIGINAL WAYS

Labour worries about how they are viewed by the right wing press and have no intention of ending sanctions, workfare, Universal Credit with its permanent sanctions or reversing the rise in retirement age that then means nil state pension for life for the poorest with no other pension provision.

THE MEDIA AND BLOGS ARE NOT INFORMING THE POOR OF NEW PARTIES THAT ARE NOT SMALL BUT BIG

As the poor now outnumber all other voters and there are so many voting areas where that is the case, the media not informing people is working against stable government.

WITHOUT THESE SMALL LEFT WING PARTIES
        BRINGING IN MPs INTO WESTMINSTER
THE TORIES WIN IN 2015 AND STAY RULING FOR NEXT 5 YEARS

Because without these new parties’ MP in Westminster’s government after Thursday 7 May, there is another nightmare scenario being seriously discussed.

The Tories will remain in power, even if their MPs lose their seats, in a caretaker government for 5 years fixed term parliament of UK government.

323 MPs OF MULTI PARTY TO ADD TO LABOUR / SNP / PLAID CYMRU AND FORM A POWERFUL MAJORITY GOVERNMENT

But a group of parties of the left of at least 323 MPs would shut the Tories out of government and form an unassailable majority in UK Westminster government that rules over the whole UK, despite devolution.

So anti austerity, abolition of the welfare cuts and all other legislation to help the poor relying on government, would get passed, as Labour would have to tow the line of the new left wing parties that only you, us, the poor can bring into UK government this year.

WHAT DOES SUPPLY AND CONFIDENCE COALITION MEAN

A supply and confidence coalition is when parties keep their identities and is what multi party coalitions out in the world do and succeed in keeping together in a majority government.

UK GOVERNMENT CANNOT GO ON AS IT IS

We need to do things differently.

        Why?

Because one party ruling government has come to an end, because voting for them has gone out of style for all ages and income levels.

THE POOR ARE MORE AND ARE AT HOME

This general election gives the poor the best chance in history.

Not least because of one factor.

        The poor will be home.

The rest will be away from home on holiday.

        Why?

Because it is the May Bank Holiday week.

Charter flights are usually Sunday to Sunday to go on a package holiday abroad.

        CONCLUSION

The public lost interest in politics and so lost the understanding of politics and government and around voting and constitutencies and all that.

And why would people in UK see a potential, if we never had a government of a whole group of parties in our history.

AN EXAMPLE IN EUROPE OF MULTI PARTY COALITION

SY.RIZ.A is written with those dots because it is a merger of many little socialist parties and a socialist green party.

SYRIZA reached a good number of MPs, but was a few seats short and so sought a partner, which is the norm in most of Europe for many years.

SYRIZA only needed a few seats so invited ANEL. And they are happily working together.

And you see Mr Tspiras – the head of SYRIZA – and the head of ANEL just as much as each other on local telly or EU telly.

SO HOW CAN I SAY THIS BETTER ON ME LITTLE WEBSITE?

I have tried to make it clear to people without knowledge of voting and politics about how much voting power they have this year.

        And why and how.

WEBSITE IS FOR SMALL PARTIES AS A RESOURCE AS MUCH AS TELLING THE BASICS OF VOTING TO A POLITICAL ILLITERATE POOR

The website is as much for the small parties, as it is for the voter.

The activists inside the small parties expect people to have a lot more knowledge than they have.

The voters just do not have even the basic knowledge about voting and politics.

It is like an illiterate third world country where the logos more than the party name are what are shown in posters everwhere, with simple messages, especially in graphic form.

Class War is the best one to do that on posters, banners and on their website.

Mebyon Kernow and Plaid Cymru could, obviously toned down a bit for their audience, take a leaf from Class War’s straightforward message.

THE MEDIA REALISE THE STRENGTH OF THE POOR VOTER

There is a resounding silence about the small parties as the big parties realise what power the poor have.

The poor are now half the population of the UK, not a minority.

        ANY CLEARER ANON?

Feedback on making me website clearer would help, please.

My aim is to get back my full state pension, that is vital food and fuel money and to help me gain disabled aids, as nil any benefits, nil state pension for life, disabled, chronic sick, unable to work so listed in the economically inactive.

Economically inactive just means left in ever deeper poverty, even after a lifetime in work and still paying the 75 per cent of taxes we all pay, in or out of work, from the stealth indirect taxes and VAT, you paid from 18 to 100.

        Thanks.

        MY MESSAGE MUST BE CORRECT

Now that the general election is getting closer, parliament shuts up shop end of month and the electioneering gets going in earnest.

I am banned from more and more blogs.

The professional politicans know my message has the potential to rip apart the austerity agenda and show that the current political class threaten lives.

And it is all I can do to help people, by the millions, facing penniless starvation, when I am stuck in a Tory safe seat deep in the countryside.

Safe because no-one comes out to vote.

Safe because none of the small parties can run in every seat because the trade unions give all their money just to Labour and very little to the parties who actually offer help to the poor.

This is the Vote or Starve election.

But the poor are not being told about the parties who actually would end starvation.

Re the comments about sanction related deaths.
When they took me off long term sick, it took 3mths for them to sort my money out (why?). That meant no rent or anything. They were supposed to back date all the payments. They only did so with the rent, I only received half of what I was owed.
If it hadn’t been for my family helping me out with the rent etc I would have lost my home and everything and at 57 that would have devastated me and I don’t think I could have lived through it.
For the past 2yrs I have been going through hell. I’m sicker than I ever was and only just surviving on the 72 pounds that they say I have to live on. After having to pay 20 for part rent and bedroom tax plus now we have to pay part community charge, another 5 per week. It doesn’t leave much for the rest of the bills.

I really believe that the gov’s aim is to kill us off by whatever means they can. A sort of “Cleansing of the poor” if you like.
I wonder how many deaths are still occurring that are people in a similar situation to myself.
I dread the signing on week as I know that I’m going to me spoken to like I’m something that has been brought in on a shoe.
Most who go to the section I go to are of similar age and status as myself (I’m 60 this year) and the staff taunt us with petty stuff trying to get us to react so that they can sanction us. I reacted by writing about it on the Sheffield Forum (no sanction that way).
They know no common sense employer will employ us, they can’t even find jobs for the young. Yet they have extended the retirement age. I have 6 and half years left of being bullied by them.
I wonder how many of us will survive it???

  16. Reblogged this on Beastrabban’s Weblog and commented:
Johnny Void here urges everyone to get involved with the week of action against workfare. Among the statistics he cites showing the destructive effect workfare has had on our society is the fact that more people have been sanctioned than have been sentenced to pay fines by the courts. Nevertheless, he also points out that the public pressure against it has had an effect, as 500 voluntary organisations have sworn not to get involved with it. This piece includes advice on how you can help promote the anti-workfare cause.

An “unreserved apology” had been issued by the government to the family of a woman who was sent a letter encouraging her to find work even though she has been in a coma for two months.

Speaking in the Commons, the Minister for Disabled People Mike Penning said things had clearly “gone wrong”.

Sheila Holt, from Rochdale, was invited to “intensive job-focused activity”.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk said the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) was hounding disabled people.

Sheila Holt’s case was highlighted by Mr Danczuk during a debate on the effects of welfare reform on the sick and disabled.

Mr Danczuk said: “Sheila has suffered from severe bipolar [disorder] since childhood and regularly has traumatic experiences.

“She has not been in employment since she was 16 years old.

However she was pushed into the Work Programme before Christmas and she was finding it extremely difficult.”

He said members of her family repeatedly informed Seetec, a contractor carrying out work capability assessments for the DWP, that she was not well “but they continued to get harassed by those organisations”.
    ‘Threatening her’

Ms Holt’s father Ken said her last job was 27 years ago and last year she was forced to go on a job-seeking course for eight days.

After each day she became more and more agitated until she “cracked” her father said, and was hospitalised following a “manic episode”.

But while in hospital she suffered a heart attack on 17 December last year and is still in a coma after suffering brain damage.

He said: “If they had left her alone she would not be in this condition. They were threatening her with cuts and she needs the benefits.

“I just believe it’s all wrong, you should be chasing the people who are fit, get them to work, not them that are not fit. It’s outrageous.”

Mr Penning said: “I apologise, unreservedly, to the family as the minister responsible.

“The family have every right to be aggrieved and I hope she makes a full recovery.”

“Is George Osborne really talking about this country. He might as well be the chancellor of Mars, as most people do not recognise the imaginary world he lives in”……………….

Everybody i speak to is struggling to make ends meet, being evicted or begging…..

“Yesterday the Dwp said the government stood behind Mike Pennings apology”

…………while Sheila laid in hospital dying, SEETEC the private, for profit company handling her work programme, sent a letter.

      It said;

“WE HOPE THAT ALL THE ACTIVITY COMPLETED SO FAR HAS NOT ONLY SUPPORTED YOU TO ACHIEVE YOUR ASPIRATIONS BUT HAS MOVED YOU CLOSER TO THE JOB MARKET”

Sheila’s own family have said, if it was not for IAIN DUNCAN SMITH, SHE WOULD BE ALIVE TODAY……………………………..

Two hundred and eleven thousand, eight hundred and twenty two names adorn the petition being presented to the DWP tomorrow, asking for the dropping of sanctions.
The petition is handed over by Gill Thompson, sister of David Clapson, another of the DWP’s death toll………………………..

  23. This through my letterbox:
“SCOTTISH LABOUR HAS A BETTER PLAN FOR WORKING PEOPLE. IT’S A PLAN FOR SCOTLAND THAT WILL MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY…..WHEN WORKING FAMILIES DO WELL SCOTLAND DOES WELL.”
    Do they have any idea??

  24. Back to the original post – here is the full interview with Rachel Reeves. I don’t like the woman but the MSM have totally taken this out of context (as per usual).
Here is the full interview and you can see for yourself what she actually said!
    http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/mar/17/labour-vows-to-reduce-reliance-on-food-banks-if-it-comes-to-power

    • They didn’t take anything out of context! That’s exactly what Reeves said! She also stated that Labour were going to be tougher on welfare than the Tories. Was that statement taken out of context too?

It’s clear the Labour party are filled with self serving, neo-liberal, careerist politicians who don’t give a damn about someone who’s out of work and struggling.

      • She is heartless, just like her Tory counterpart, McVey. I’ll be voting SNP, as they are the party that Labour would be if they cared about the rest of us and not just “Working families”. She intends to close down the foodbanks, yeah, probably she does, but that doesn’t mean Labour will do away with the need for them – they will do away with the people who need them instead.

        • Absolutely JCP, i’ll be joining you in voting SNP. As a former life long Labour supporter, i feel alienated by the self serving class of politicians that currently try to impersonate real Labour people. It’s clear that Labour has no time for anyone who is unfortunate enough to have fallen on hard times and to be on benefits. Lose your job, for any reason, and you face a monumental battle to get any benefits and to be able to keep them without having to be pimped out as a slave to greedy companies who are not prepared to pay a worker a wage for his labor.

I felt conflicted the past couple of months thinking about the GE because i can’t bear the thought of those toffee nosed tits being in power for another 5 years. But at the same time i detest this ‘New Labour’ with a passion. All the red Tories are saying ‘oh a vote for the SNP is another vote lost for Labour and makes it easier for David Cameron to again take office.’ I don’t care anymore. I want to vote for a party and an ideology that i do agree with.

          Go SNP.

  25. New Labour you will be obliterated in Scotland and the sooner the better you Red Tories along with Cleggy and his faction of reprobatres. Milliband, Cleggy, Cameron, Farage all the same and I don’t think Salmond is any better or his successor either.

  26. Too many millionaires in politics serving capitalists. Capitalism is okay, extreme capitalism where people are on zero hour contracts etc is dangerous.

  27. It is Absolutely Important that People Vote to Help the Poor and Vulnerable
have a Voice and Get the Tory and Liberal Democrat Scum Out of
    Office Now and Forever

Just as Germany will Never Again have a Nazi Government it is
Important that Never Again the United Kingdom has a Tory Government
while they have been as Obnoxious as the Con Dems
