RIP Julia Kelly: Another Tragic Suicide After DWP Threats

julie-kelly1A woman who founded a charity to help people suffering with chronic pain committed suicide after a battle to claim disability benefits ended with the DWP demanding that she repay £4000 in backdated payments.

Julia Kelly was just 39 when she took ker own life at the end of last year.  In an  inquest into her death the Northampton Chronicle reported that the coronor believed the “upset caused by the potential withdrawal of her benefits had been the trigger for her to end her life.”

According to a statement made by her father at the inquest, Ms Kelly had attended three tribunals in her attempts to gain disability benefits.  Mr Kelly said he “firmly believed” correspondance from the DWP triggered her death adding:

“Not to be believed by the DWP that she was suffering chronic back pain and also to be accused of wrongdoing and be told her payments might be stopped – we believe she snapped and could not take it any more.”

Despite this the DWP made a nasty statement which attempts to suggest she had thousands of pounds and was therefore not eligible for out of work disability benefits.  According to a spokesperson for the department “If a claimant exceeds the threshold with thousands of pounds in savings, they may no longer be entitled to the benefit.”  It would not take three tribunals to establish how much someone had in savings.   There is far more to this than the DWP are suggesting.

The news of the inquest into her death comes on the same day that Iain Duncan Smith said that stopping people’s benefit is ‘compassionate’.

The charity founded by Julia Kelly, which her father has said he will continue, can be found at: http://www.awaywithpain.co.uk/  Please support them if you can, they are also on twitter @awaywithpain

  1. Police break down door of Mansfield man’s flat after DWP told them he could be suicidal

    Mansfield Chad – 6th March 2015

Police officers smashed down the front door of a Mansfield man’s flat after the DWP tipped them off he could be suicidal.

Kevan Ramsdale was settling down for the night in front of his TV with his headphones on when two policemen walked into his bedroom.

Kevan 52, said he was shocked and surprised to see the two men.

Mr Ramsdale who is in the process of making a claim with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), said: “I was talking to someone about my claim being delayed and I asked the woman on the phone if she had seen a Channel 4 Dispatches TV programme the night before showing how many people had committed suicide after having their benefits cut.

    • This is what happens in prisons – other cons/the screws say that you mentioned being ‘suicidal’ – so you get put on ‘suicide watch’… sat in a perspex cell on the end of the landing wearing fuck all and shitting in a bucket in full view of everyone, screws, lawyers walking past, not to mention being woken up constantly You should NEVER mention that you feel ‘suicidal’ in a prison. Obviously, the DWP/Jobcentre have learned from this an have now added this new terror tactic to their arsenal/’toolkit’ – CUNTS!!

Dad-of-three killed himself after benefits were stopped and he was threatened with eviction

First published Friday 6 March 2015 in News

A FATHER-of-three from Nelson took his own life after his benefits were stopped and he was threatened with eviction from his home, an inquest heard.

The body of Benjamin Del McDonald, of Vaughan Street, was found off Gib Hill Road, where he played as a child, last November.

His sister, Mickayla Carr, told Burnley Coroner’s Court Mr McDonald was “a happy-go-lucky person” who “doted” on his five-year-old daughter.

Mr McDonald, 34, suffered from depression and was reported missing by his ex-partner, Joanne Almond, on November 19 before being discovered near Marsden Park Golf Club that afternoon.

RIP JULIA KELLY, so fucking sad… beggars believe that they call this compassion…what now? pain(s) is/are often draining, mind numbing, on top of the cause of this/these symptom(s), there is no way round it, denial of it is futile…and certainly no one wants to make it worse by doing activities that exacerbate/worsen it….the anxiety of finding a way of springing into action often does…the prism through which many see life is totally removed from being human…it’s like they get all of their info on whats good and bad from a book!

  8. A public inquiry into her death is needed. Even if she legitimately owed £4,000—why didn’t the DWP allow her to repay small amounts each week?

There’s a double standard when a MP named Maria Miller is treated very differently by the Government over claimed expenses.

i’ve had to work very hard to overcome and heal from the profound/severe affects of child abuse…this is actually my 1st viewing of this vid (below) as i’ve only just found it..it is presented by prof joe sim…it does contain the work of dr bob johnson the vid is very profound, raw, and powerful..if one wants to view it, it can be found here…punishment; a failed social experiment….imo very relevant to this post…punishment simply does no good and much harm, if we are to create a compassionate society the lessons shown here must be learnt…. find the alienation speech of jimmy reid, as powerful today, in fact even more so than when it was 1st penned/spoken….

  10. The consequences of the DWP’s harsh and uncompassionate welfare reforms are tragically apparent in these latest suicides; this recent article (http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/feb/18/cuts-suicide-timebomb-mp-madeleine-moon-mental-health) is prescient.

  11. Yet another.

  12. Stephen Wright-Serious Time+Dub 1993

  13. Shocking – do the DWP really think that people would even cross their doorstep if they weren’t entitled to JSA or ESA – they go to sign on to claim benefit they are entitled to and get credit for their National Insurance contributions – nobody would go near them if they had loads of money. Where is everyone’s NI contributions and tax deductions going if it isn’t going to pay welfare benefits then?

  14. Up here on Tyneside we have the highest rate of suicides in England. On Wednesday yet another victim’s body was found washed up on a beach a short distance from where I live, the latest in a spate to hit the area (South Tyneside) in the last couple of years.

It’s hardly a coincidence that the north-east is the jobs blackspot of the UK, where the unemployment rate is still well above the national average, and where many older workers – particularly middle-aged men who are statistically most at risk of taking their own lives – are virtually trapped on benefits due to ageist attitudes amongst employers. Add to that the corrosive culture of intimidation and bullying they are subjected to at jobcentres, with the constant threat of being sanctioned on the whim of some arsehole “work coach”, and it’s hardly surprising that some are pushed beyond endurance into ending it all.

And let’s not forget that the architects of all this misery being inflicted upon claimants are self-professed “Christians” – Blair, Cameron, IDS, et al. Were they not commanded by their faith’s founder to “do unto others as you would have them do to you”? (Luke 6:31). IDS should be forced to explain, using his holy book as the source, how stopping people’s benefit is “compassionate”. He couldn’t, of course, because he’s a total hypocrite like the rest of the callous God-bothering brigade that swell the ranks of his loathsome party.

    • overburdenddonkey

      trevor
sad but so true, they inflict/project their good and evil crap onto us so as to claim virtue according to rote learning, twisting words from a book so as to become a doctrine/dogma/ideology to profit from, to crush others with…ruled by ‘god’ fearing twats….

    • dirt_under_their_feet

From the holy book of IDS, Cameron, Blair, et al :

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ …

Thereupon IDS tells the nation – look at all that I’m doing to help the poor, as by removing their benefits and any support, I give them so many more opportunities to find ways of feeding and housing themselves; and by further undermining the job market, the wonderful chance of their own job creation; and then I also heal the sick as well, so that the can have the same opportunities as everyone else…

He really is completely ideologocally insane. Unfortunately an insane person in a very powerful position, with a lot of ways available to him to damage and destroy the lives of others.

May all of the suffering he has caused become his own suffering, and the same for everyone else involved with the furthering of this reign of terror.

      • Just to add that insanity is not a defence, though, for the suffering that is being caused – I’m Dangerous & Sadistic is being encouraged and cheered on from the sidelines by ?xxx? others; as well as directly enabled by those who are equally, if not doubly, responsible for his actions.

        * the left & right should really be the other way round in the above verses to make them apply exactly in this case ….

  17. DWP + JCP = SCUM.

There has to be a day of reckoning ahead for these pricks. They have to be made to answer for their crimes. I refuse to believe that as a society we have to stand back and watch, powerless to act, as they just walk away from the carnage they’ve caused and the lives they’ve ended/destroyed.

Trouble is the DWP and it’s employees are hiding behind acts of parliament that have been insidiously passed by successive governments to blame the victim and make them the guilty.

Many DWP/JCP employees should be doing jail time for what they’ve done and the cruelty they’ve used on the most vulnerable.

  19. sad news. tragic. ugly to say but from
dwp view on out of work ” stock ”
    a suicide is a job ‘ created ‘…
we know they fiddle the jobless numbers
    those sanctioned,on work program,
    doing workfare,doing voluntary etc not
    included in jobless figures..
million sanctions last year is a
    million ‘new’ jobs ‘created’.
they dont just fiddle the dole figures
    but also the crime figures..
today the home affairs commitee report
found over 30% of crimes..often rape
and other violent crimes were just
dealt with by handing out cautions ..
‘ out of court disposals ‘ and
    ‘community resolutions ‘.
in 2012 more than 10,000 serious
    violent crimes dealt with informally.
    with ‘ community resolutions’ there
merely would be an apology or
    compensation instead of prosecutions
    and cautions..these politicians seem to
fiddle anything..as for ian duncan smith
saying benefit sanctions are an act of
“compassion”..i think we send him to
    the hague via hatton.

  23. GEOFF REYNOLDS

“You are witnessing just the tip of the iceberg, many thousands have already died and many more will follow ”

The figure of sixty that the DWP initially said they have investigated was nothing but a smokescreen for the real death toll.
If deaths a couple of years back was initially 10,600, just think what the actual figure is now, now the cutbacks are starting to hit home.

Just have a good look at the governments impact analysis on the introduction of the 2012 welfare reform acts, they are nothing but a hastily cobbled bag of shit to rubber stamp the changes needed to invoke poisoned laws.

“One death should have made alarm bells ring, thousands of deaths is nothing short of Ethnic cleansing by the state on an industrial scale”

It is hard for anyone who has not been a victim of DWP bullying to understand what all the fuss is about.

I have been the recipient of the most heinous evil, ever perpetrated on a disabled person, many on this very site carry the scars of protracted abuse.

For two and a half years i have not slept properly, plagued by nightmares and letter after letter from faceless decision makers and bent judges………….

Is this the price one has to pay for having a disability?

Relentless torture that exacerbates the pains that you already carry while being made to exist on thin air.

CHRISTOPHER GRAHAM THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION CZAR, SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR COVERING UP THE CLAIMANT’S DEATHS.

    • GEOFF REYNOLDS

“THE ONLY REASON THAT THE DWP DOES NOT RELEASE THE REVIEWS INTO CLAIMANT DEATHS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE GUILTY AS SIN”

EACH AND EVERY SUICIDE POINTING DIRECTLY AT THE ARCHITECT OF EVILS DOOR.

HE IS BUT A DEAD MAN WALKING……………

  24. The DWP like to talk about “thousands of pounds” as if it is a vast sum of money when in actual fact the sum in question was probably hardly enough to pay for the deposit on a new fridge.

  25. IDS must be pleasantly surprised that the JCP work coaches enforced his nefarious whims beyond his wildest dreams and the worst nightmares of claimants.

    • They either adapted really quite fast, looked around for alternative employment, retired if they could or were got rid of – sink or swim in the swamp.

There seemed to be a lot of moving ‘advisers’ around alongside the introduction of their Stricter Benefits Regime – or moving ‘customers’ if need be – to a more effective ‘Benefits Refusal Adviser ‘ (BRA).

      • Have been sanctioned by several JCP work coaches in the same office the idea of one bad apple or unique “Benefits Refusal Adviser” is not in my experience.

        • I think I struck really very lucky at one point (for around a 3/4 month period and before being sent on the WP). Before that, a completely nasty ‘bit-between-the-teeth’ one who tried to issue a sanction doubt at 1st interview … then later on the really, really vicious one who had ‘I Love My Job and My Job is to Cause You Harm’ written all over her … with a few variations of the same in between.

It was only a few short years ago (about 5?) that I signed on for a while and there was not quite ‘none’ of this, but far less. It was Income Support rather than JSA tho’, & was on a different floor of the building – so going ‘upstairs’ in 2012 was a really steep learning curve – to put it mildly. I was aware of an overall change in 2012 with security guards everywhere watching every move/challenging and and running over to issue a telling off at the sight of a mobile phone.

Definitely not just one or a few bad apples now – they’re virtually all rotten to the core or they wouldn’t still be there.

          • (The after-effects have not gone away 12-15 months on & impact on how I now am at work & more generally). As they say though – supposedly – what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger …

I’m not sure this would be the same exactly if I hadn’t been able to ‘do enough’ – & be lucky enough – to avoid a sanction though – it cost a lot at the time and will stay with me. As people on here have said – impossible to understand unless or until you have been (in) there.

          • *Aware of the overall change @2008.

      • Sorry Shirley, shouldn’t that be “moving ‘stock’ to the slaughter?”

        • That was more or less how it felt at the time …. “Hello, I’m your new executioner … sorry, I mean ‘adviser’. Now, are you sitting comfortably …? Let’s begin [to try to ruin your child/ren’s life chances]…they don’t mean anything to me, and I may even qualify for a bonus!”.

  28. Council contracts worth millions given without correct tendering process, DWP report reveals

    Bournemouth Echo – 5th March 2015

A lack of financial controls and the pressures placed on staff led to the controversial Dorset Waste Partnership failing to comply with legal requirements, it has been claimed.

A damning report into the partnership has revealed “serious non-compliance” with both Dorset County Council’s own rules and the legal restraints on all public bodies.

Monitoring officer Jonathan Mair’s report states that contracts worth £765,000 and £808,000 were given to two contractors without any compliant tendering processes.

More than 28 hire vehicles were also operated without their details being passed to the Motor Insurers Information Centre – a criminal offence.

As reported in yesterday’s Echo, Steve Burdis, the director of DWP, has now been suspended from his £70,000 post and is facing disciplinary action.

The DWP, a partnership of seven Dorset councils, sparked concern when it reported an overspend of £2.8m, including more than £1m used for hire vehicles.

An investigation by the South West Audit Partnership has concluded that there were serious weaknesses in DWP’s financial management processes and a lack of controls in place around hiring vehicles.

  30. Mum of dead disabled teen says nothing has changed with care trust

    Oxford Mail – 26th Feb 2015

THE MOTHER of an 18-year-old who died under the care of learning disability services in Oxfordshire has questioned the service’s openness.

Sara Ryan spoke out after a Care Quality Commission inspection found that staff and service users were “concerned” about how the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust was handling Connor Sparrowhawk’s death. It did not detail what these concerns were.

Headington resident Dr Ryan said: “I’m not surprised because the way that the trust handled the situation with Connor was appalling.”

The report, published yesterday, stated: “This was clearly causing distress and affecting staff morale and unrest with people using services and their families.”

Connor drowned in a bath in July 2013 after suffering an epileptic fit at The Slade, a short-term assessment and treatment centre for people with learning disabilities. The unit he died in was closed to admissions in November 2013.

        “CORPORATE MANSLAUGHTER BY THE DWP”

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 is a landmark in law. For the first time, companies and organisations can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter as a result of serious management failures resulting in a gross breach of a duty of care.

The Act, which came into force on 6 April 2008, clarifies the criminal liabilities of companies including large organisations where serious failures in the management of health and safety result in a fatality.

The Ministry of Justice leads on the Act and more information is available on its Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 webpage.

HSE welcomes and supports the Act. Although the new offence is not part of health and safety law, it will introduce an important new element in the corporate management of health and safety.

Prosecutions will be of the corporate body and not individuals, but the liability of directors, board members or other individuals under health and safety law or general criminal law, will be unaffected. And the corporate body itself and individuals can still be prosecuted for separate health and safety offences.

The Act also largely removes the Crown immunity that applied to the previous common law corporate manslaughter offence. This is welcome, and consistent with Government and HSE policy to secure the eventual removal of Crown immunity for health and safety offences. The Act provides a number of specific exemptions that cover public policy decisions and the exercise of core public functions.

  32. Just heard from a mate who got a letter this morning from the despicable and odious ‘WORKING LINKS’ pleading with him to contact them and let them know if he got a job etc. All the details basically they want to know. Could that be so as they can collect their blood money fee? It makes you wonder doesn’t it? Considering this all started over two years ago!

So two years and counting and they’re still harassing this guy at home with demanding letters. It would be interesting to know where the person stands as far as the data protection act. Should a company, that you indicated you didn’t want to contract with them in any way, still have your personal details on their computer system? Surely any details should have been deleted when the said person indicated he wanted nothing to do with them?

Pretty desperate the measures the scum will stoop to in order to collect their fee eh?

    • This happened to me with ingeus, they. Basically threatened me I’d haveMy tax credits sanctioned if I didn’t co operate with them and attend meetings after I’d signed off. I only ever did induction with them and. Found my job by myself. Then they kept ringing me even after I’d told them back off. I never signed their data waiver. They r all scum. And then they tried to find if . Was still employed 2 years on so they could cash in again..

      • A Cease and Desist letter sent as ‘signed for’ should sort it all out – once you mention that harassment is a criminal offence punishable by up to six months in prison, and that you would consider any further contact from them as harassment. Keep a copy of the letter, of course, and also the receipt from the post office for the cost of the postage and that it was a signed for delivery. Also, follow up by checking out the tracking on the Royal Mail website, as it will state when your letter was delivered and should have the signature of the person who received it.

If they persist in contacting you, keep a log of it all, and do report it to the police, though I doubt you’ll have any problems if you send them a letter that you can prove you sent, and they received. Should cost you less than 2 quid, which is a bit steep, but probably worth it for peace of mind.

        • An email can also work – if passed ‘high enough’ up the chain of command and including mention of seeking legal advice regarding what “may amount to harassment …”.

    And it gets worse… http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/345/pdfs/uksi_20150345_en.pdf

The UC if you earn to much and get your UC cancelled, you can be bared from claiming it again, for I think 6 months, if your earnings go down rule.

Basically if you are on UC, earn a good wack, then hit hard times you will be expected to have put aside enough to carry you over for six months as instead of UC being based on each months earnings, it will take into consideration past earnings as well.

There was an article on insidehousing about it, but I think its now a paywalled site to keep the general public out.

the stab impact is no money, until one is given leave to submit appeal to the FtT….there are circumstances where one can reapply ie it is 6 mths from the initial claim or one’s conditions have worsened, which they obviously will if benefits are stopped…

    • New universal credit rules which could leave 200,000 claimants waiting six months for their benefit have sparked fresh fears over increased tenant rent arrears.

The new regulations, which were quietly laid in parliament last week, have been described by social landlords as likely to lead to increased hardship and evictions.

Regardless of the merits and shortcomings of UC in principle, the constant need to tweak it here and tweak it there in order to cover all possible circumstances will doom it to be an expensive failure. Just as with the tax system, building on successive layers of complexity to cater for anomalous circumstances will result in a huge, inflexible, inefficient behemoth of a system that neither operators nor operands will understand. Epic fail in the making – and all So predictable (and predicted).

Surely this is a penalty for working, or pursuing any type of employment that may only be temporary.
I always thought that benefits covered a specific period of time and that if you did not get enough for that specific period you got benefits.

Of course, Income Tax and Tax Credits are calculated on an annual basis are they not. Is this a means to try and draw benefits in to the same type of regime?

So let me get my head around this… in a self employed situation where someone has been s/e for over a year and the MIF applies.

If the person has a good 6 months and reports on a monthly basis and receives some U/C. Then has a great few months(due to the nature of s/e work) and gets no U/C for 3 months. Then month 10 U/C will either use MIF or the 1st 6 months s/e even though the client has no income from s/e

Please someone tell me if I’m following this right…:)

It may force a claimant, not to declare income. It is forcing people to be benefit cheats?

This is not the first time IDS has “tweaked” UC and won’t be the last either.

However, the REAL issue is the programme itself which will cost billions more to the taxpayer even in theory yet UC for some unknown reason is discussed as being right in theory when it is not and Raven above starts with “Regardless of the merits and shortcomings of UC in principle,…”

UC – the merging of the benefits and tax systems means EVERYONE will get EVERY PENNY they are entitled to or more simple not a penny more not a penny less.

YET the 2009/10 latest (yes seriously!) figures is £8.34 billion per year in tax credits, WTC and CTC, goes unclaimed but will have to be paid in UC

The last time the benefit non take up figures were released was also in 2011 and for 2009/10 and revealed welfare benefits unclaimed which will also have to be paid in UC – this one stop shop assessment for all benefits. So:

£6.7 billion in HB that goes unclaimed will be paid
£2.2 billion in all forms of IS will have to be paid
        £1.7 billion in JSA unclaimed
£2.7 billion in Pension Credit that goes unclaimed

and there is more but that all adds up to an additional cost of at least £20 billion more per year as everyone gets every benefit they are entitled to

        Bollocks to paywalls 😀

    “300 SNOUTS IN THE TROUGH”

Almost one in five staff members employed by MPs and peers also have lobbying or outside interests, an analysis of data by the Guardian reveals.

There are currently 113 passholders in the House of Commons who declare outside interests to other bodies, while another 206 in the House of Lords have similar links, the analysis of parliamentary records shows.

Those in possession of parliamentary passes include a defence industry lobbyist who was once suspended from the Palace of Westminster and people with links to banks, gambling firms and low tax campaigners.
Has Ed Miliband got what it takes to be prime minister?

Of more than 300 staff working for parliamentarians in Westminster with outside interests, the Guardian has found that only a maximum of 11 are likely to be required to sign the lobby register when it is introduced at the end of next month – and only then if they meet a minister or a senior civil servant in the course of their activities.

‘There are physical threats and intimidation as well as psychological abuse. It’s systematic coercion and control.’

The government’s Modern Slavery Bill, launched by the home secretary last year and currently going through Parliament, aims to provide new powers to protect people who are trafficked and held against their will.

‘The first step to eradicating the scourge of modern slavery is acknowledging and confronting its existence,’ she told the Guardian at the time. ‘The estimated scale of the problem in modern Britain is shocking and these new figures starkly reinforce the case for urgent action.’

The modern slavery minister, Karen Bradley, told the BBC previously the issue was a hidden crime.

‘It’s going on in streets, in towns, in villages across Britain and we need to help people find the signs of it so we can find those victims and importantly then find the perpetrators.’

  41. R4 08/03/15:-
    :
“Job Centre staff may be required to identify vulnerable persons who may be susceptible to being radicalised …” … [and ‘report’ their suspicions to the powers that be ?].

    – Not a direct quote due to the shock of these being the first words heard on waking up – as if from a nightmare – bur quotes this has just been said, on national radio, in essence. Just when you think it can’t really get much more nightmarish, or more surreal. JCP- employees are well-known for their highly sensitive natures and their ability to spot a vulnerable person, and to generally ‘see’ and try to learn something about the individuals who sit opposite them – see above. They are already drunk with the power they are free to excersise – if this becomes law what next?

Meanwhile, the government have refused to comment on leaked documents(apparently). Perhaps they don’t want to draw further attention to this by commenting. And there is still time for this to be passed in law before the general election (according to R4).

To be read in the style of the Artist Taxi Driver (with apologies – Loudly and with incredulity) –
“Can you imagine?! I mean, can you imagine if this became law?!”+!+!

    • It would no ‘doubt’ amount to a tick box on a sheet and the answer given recorded and then subject to further ‘interpretation’ and given due or undue weight when deciding on a person’s claim – almost inevitably a young person. It would probably fall under the category of deserving a sanction doubt pending investigation of the validty of the claim (?)

It would involve JCP- minions contemplating new claimants with certain characteristics (age/ethnicity/religion/gender/don’t like the look of you much/an intellect/ability to express an opinion/carries a book/looks a bit ‘political’ – has studied politics/religion/”passive/aggressive/does not seem to want to “do enough” to find work/expressed a criticism of Our Great Leader” or even the [stricter benefits] regime) – despite being instructed via a ‘toolkit’ to disregard these and treat everyone evenhandedly – with the question already present in t\heir mind:-

“Might this person potentially pose a risk to national security (my) security?”. Could not make this one up. They’d need a whole new (half-day) training course.

    • @Shirley Nott ” looking at me in a funny way ” apologies to late smith and no apologies to Jones

      “APRIL 2012″

A DWP spokesperson said: “It remains rare to find incidents of self-harm where the benefits system is said to have been a factor, but we are not complacent when it comes to ensuring that our staff can provide the right support and help to those affected.

……………………………………..”CARRY ON KILLING, IT’S FAR CHEAPER TO LAY SOMEBODY TO REST THAN PAY THEIR ENTITLEMENTS, WE ALL UNDERSTAND YOUR MOTIVES”

  43. “The Telegraph adds that job centre staff would be required to identify claimants “vulnerable” to radicalisation, while people who refused to learn English and integrate would be penalised in the benefit system.”

    • @Shirley ” penalised in the benefit system ”
Like workfare and being sanctioned for anything. What if the ” extremist ” claimant took their own life as a result of being sanctioned they would be seen as a martyr and encourage more extremists.
Well done DWP helping to radicalise others

    • Another Fine Mess

job centre staff would be required to identify claimants “vulnerable” to radicalisation
      Will there be targets?

      • Yes of course there will be targets mostly those right in the cross hairs

      • “Categorically, there will not be any targets for this. Almost anyone could fall within this category and so JCP- staff will not need them”. (Fester McVile)

        • @Shirley apart from all those benefit scroungers and especially those fake disabled terrorists.

Not as mad as this seems as several pundits put forward the idea that terrorists must all be on welfare in order to carry out their deadly plots and rehearse.them and that if they had a job no doubt these crimes would not take place as they would be too busy at work to be planning to bomb people

          • It doesn’t sound at all mad as in ‘no madder than anything else that’s already in place’. Particularly if they “have their curtains closed/can afford wi-fi” etc. etc.

It could be enough just to conflate the two concepts – unemployment and the other one – so that the idea is out there and can germinate/take root (so to speak). The vast majority, if not all, DWP and ‘social’ policies were never intended to ‘work’ at the most surface/obvious way (if by some chance they do, it would not have been their first aim). We need only look at and listen to what DWP/IDS and the rest have done and said to date, to know that it is absolutely an ideological propaganda war they want to win:-

So no-one “deserves” anything unless they work for it. Government department(s) to define “work” for this purpose. Even then, they don’t “deserve” it and so it can be removed, in its entirety, for any number of alleged “reasons”. Social security/national insurance contributions and ideologically, an NHS not free at the point of use.

They’ve become so well-versed in the use of ‘extreme’ and previously never-heard of arguments/justifications for their acts – and instilling fear – I won’t use the ‘t’ word. So the ever-widening means of being able to confront/accuse and then punish/cause harm through removal of financial support is an irony too far. Although they’ve evolved a new word to define their (mal) practice – the ‘s’ word – more people now seem very gradually, to be questioning this unethical and in too many cases, lethal, act. Perhaps finally enough people will finally understand and steps will be taken to prevent further escalations?

            • @Shirley actually I just read an article on Cameron and his part I’m stolen nukes and that he often sees anyone who goes against him as some sort of terrorist. And inclined to contact his chums in spook land to fix things for him

              • “You’re either with us, or you’re against us” … the issue of issuing sanctions seems to be black and white, along with the use of torture/the death penalty – as it can effectively be a form of both.

Nothing about DC would surprise me at this point – he just looks so smooth and doughy but underneath that smooth, doughy exterior lurks a heart of iron-filings.

  44. Job centre staff may also be told to identify vulnerable claimants who could become targets for radicalisation.

  48. Have a hard enough time dealing with the inflated egos of the JCP work coaches, now they are going to think they are SIS operatives with a licence to kill.

    • They’d be most likely to include this for new claimants (?) – if it came to it – perhaps – and maybe only revert to thinking about this if all else really is failing/they have it in completely for someone (so anyone, at any time) and they can somehow find ways to make the ‘facts’ fit. The not-speaking English will probably scupper more people if taken to its (il)logical conclusion.

It’s not too difficult to picture a scene in maybe ten (5?) years or so, where people would be potentially even more careful than they might be now about expressing any opinion within the JCP-, other than, “Yes, of course I agree and I think [anything you have just said] is a great idea/will help me to find more work”. “I know you have my best interests at heart – that’s artichoke heart, you understand. I am absolutely not referring to radish in any of its forms, as I have never liked these and refuse to even look at one”. “Please – if you do ever see me anywhere near the awful peppery things, do it to Julia and not to me”.

  49. Reblogged this on Beastrabban’s Weblog and commented:
This is another victim of the Coalition’s murderous system of benefit sanctions to add to the long list of others who’ve died in poverty and despair. Many of them also died at their own hands, ground down and destroyed by this government’s vindictive determination to punish the poor and disabled for simply being poor and disabled.

And the list of victims is a very long one. A year or so ago, Stilloaks on his blog published a list of about 45 people. Tom Pride, Johnny Void and Mike of Vox Political have also published that and similar lists. That was, however, at least a year ago, and there have been many others since. These include two people, who died within the same number of weeks of each other after having their benefit stopped by Ashton-Under-Lyme Jobcentre.

The anodyne statement made by the DWP that it may be necessary for the department to reclaim money that they have overpaid definitely hides the truth about this sad case. Mr Void rightly points out that it should not take three inquiries to establish whether Ms Kelly had the money. I know personally a number of people, who’ve had to fight tooth and nail after the Department mixed up their benefits and kept mixing up their benefits. So much so in fact that I believe this may be a deliberate part of the policy. Just as industrial products have built in obsolescence, I wonder if the system also has built-in incompetence as an additional deterrent to people poor or desperate enough to want to sign on.
