Government Scraps Benefits Calculator And Plugs Private Sector Cronies Instead

entitled-to-ssClaimants keen to found out how much better off they would be by taking a job can no longer do so on a government website after the popular Benefit Calculator was quietly disappeared.

Instead claimants are being referred to the privately run entitledto website, where they will be subject to gaudy randomised adverts inviting them to take out private health insurance amongst other things.

Of even more concern is that claimants wanting to know how much benefit they will receive if they take up a job are restricted on the site to only carrying out two searches.  If they want to do anymore they have to pay (see below).

What entitledto have done for this free advert on a busy government website is unclear.  It will certainly generate them a tidy sum in google advertising revenue.  Entitledto is run by a former DWP economist Dr Phil Agulnik.  How cosy.

  1. Makes no sense if you want to help claimants, but makes every sense if the opposite is true. The Benefit Calculator is a simple bit of programming which anybody could knock up given a good knowledge of the benefit system. Wouldn’t it be nice if somebody did this and put the fucker online for free?

    • Indeed, now’s the time for the open source lads to step up. This is the way it has to be with everything, across the board, every time they try to force us to spend money we find a free alternative which leaves them and their business chums out of the loop. Got no food? Learn foraging. NHS charging? Go for a free alternative, energy healing, whatever.

      • It’s a bit creepy that you can only get results by email. Why should you have to reveal your email address? Why not just display the results of a calculation in the browser, immediately, for you to print out or save to a flash drive or to disk as a file?

        • got your email you cant say i dont use computers or whatever should you get faced with a needy situation . in other words big brother is watching you

  3. I’d delight in turning prominent Tories into artsy lampshades, and other miscellaneous gee-gaws,handicrafts,etc.

    • John McArthur

And thus you become no different from them.

      • Jester McFail

There’s a sayin John do unto them what they would do to you, But do it first. By the way these so called elite fuckers are planning their next round of mass murder, They deserve everything that’s coming to them! Rant over.

    • A bit over the top-I’d settle for making them do workfare tidying up after trade unionists. Non-painful, but humiliating.

  4. I was fully expecting to read that the “gaudy randomised adverts” invited the reader to commit suicide…

Anyway, if anyone reading this does know the benefits system, I can do the coding…

    • Another Fine Mess

I think the coding might be the easy bit.
They say they employ more than 10 people, so that’ll be 1 to run the website then, and 10 others trying and unravel all the mess IBS makes.

  5. If it’s brown, wrinkly, and smells like shit, …. it very likely …. is!

  6. Yet another example of the corruption, greed and self-interest that we see so often from our politicians/government. Don’t really see a need to ascribe this to any particular party either.

  8. hey have you seen the daily record today ?

Esther McVey has revealed shocking plans to force unemployed Scots into jobs with no guaranteed hours or wages The Tory employment minister says that when the new universal credit is brought in, poor people will have their benefits stopped for three months or more if they refuse to accept zero hours contracts.

private health insurance, I swear you couldn’t make this up could you, in fact this past couple of years I have seen some statements (mainly by tories) that
have me thinking I’m living in an alternative universe.

    QUESTION;
“How much has been spent on this doomed fiasco?

When will ministers accept that it is not fit for purpose and never will be?

Whose head will roll if it is abandoned?

What happened to the security measures within the software?

How long before it is abandoned, leaving one of the largest bills for a failed project in British

    • GEOFF REYNOLDS

A good contact of mine has told me that he was approached by two separate headhunters recently, asking if he might be interested in becoming director general of Universal Credit.

The incumbent, Howard Shiplee, was off sick for several weeks earlier this year, and another source has told me that he is still not back working full-time – it was suggested that he is only fully working for one day a week. This source suggested that Shiplee was still very ill – he has apparently had a form of bronchitis that turned into something more serious.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) press office insists there are no plans for Shiplee to step down, and said the focus of the welfare reform programme is on plans for further expansion in the summer.

But you have to bear in mind that the same department consistently denied there were any problems with the Universal Credit IT project, right up to the point last year that the National Audit Office revealed just how deep and costly those problems were.

      • GEOFF REYNOLDS

“is SHIPLEE, of the UNIVERSAL CREDIT fame, working on a ZERO HOURS contract then?

        • Doubt it, Geoff. He’ll be on full pay and expenses, even though not actually fulfilling his contract terms as laid down when he took up the position of DWP lackey.

  12. If you dont already you should pass these gems on to Max Keiser on Russia Today, This is the sort of thing he loves to bring up on “The Keiser Report”.

  13. Not surprised at anything this deviant shower get up to. All about money and exploitation from start to finish. Deny benefits, sanction people, charge people for using a friggin’ online calculator. All part and parcel of the same con.

It all boils down to the same thing; we’re being conned and shafted stupid and no one helps. In our hour of need we were left to our own devices. That’s ok if you’re up for the fight, like me, but a lot of people are not and can’t take it anymore.

  15. Reblogged this on Beastrabban’s Weblog and commented:
Another piece of government privatisation to supply more public service work for their cronies. And from their point of view, it’s even better as the unemployed have to pay for the service after two searches.

  16. They do or did run, more likely now the latter, do these better off in work calculations at the jobcentre.none have been offered in recent times here at least.

Given the current state of the uk job market which now seems predominantly agency vacancies, where you cannot be sure the vacancy actually exists or what term, and applications 100+ are common also or zero hours contracts.such calculations aren’t always easy to make with certainty.

  17. Benefits Calculator – how do you benefit calculate a sanction or the big fat ZERO in contract.

    • I won’t use their new-fangled benefits calculator. It’ll have disaster written all over it as per usual from the Department of sanctions and no help.

  18. And so it came to pass, that a few days after my JCP claimed its two remaining public phones were wonky, they finally removed them from the walls. Stuff the 0845 number if I have to phone them over something, I’ll use their alternate 0800 benefit number (if it is still available) and have them pay for my calls to them.

  19. Reblogged this on Vox Political and commented:
Is anyone surprised? This government has a history of scrapping sources of useful information – ESA mortality statistics, anybody? – and now it has handed benefit calculation over to a commercial site that pushes readers to take out private health insurance – and cuts them off if they won’t pay after two visits. It’s all part of the plan to push us onto private health and welfare, of course.
    Avoid.

    • If the public phones and jobpoints are being phased out, is it high time that all JCP staff were also phased out as well?

All benefit claims and queries, along with job searching has gone digital now. There is no excuse to keep JCP staff in this day and age, except to issue sanctions. They should be replaced by automated machines where we clients, to get our benefits, use a touch-screen (multiple choice questions) to determine whether or not we are eligible for payments that week or not.

      • When they introduced mandatory universal jobmatch use. The local Jobcentre to me put a sign on the job points saying they wasn’t working worked fine . The public phones got taken away not long ago they got used every day i was in Now if a job comes up you need to phone using you’re own pittance .

They will never do away with the staff Who would be our jobcoach then? lol
The staff would be sorted any way with the redundacy pay out no need to sign on

        • Obi Wan Kenobi

          Elite:

The use of Universal Jobwank is NOT mandatory.

The only mandatory elements are to create a profile and public CV after you have done that you DON’T have to use it to search for a job.

Also once you have created your public CV there is nothing stopping you making it private after that.

          • Well i got told it’s mandatory. I will log into my universal jobmatch to find and apply for jobs i can do in my claimant commitment . A looked into it check this link https://www.gov.uk/government/news/jobseekers-required-to-use-universal-jobmatch

A have to take print outs every time a sign on every website a use they put it into my claimant commitment That a must search indeed s1 jobs scotcareers and employer websites 4 times a week I have to put it in my activity history . They gave me a job log then took it away then gave me one then took it away and said a was to put it all in my activity history

Before no jobs to match my skills was fine Now forbye looking for a job to apply for a have too look for one a can’t and say why a never applied

            • Obi Wan Kenobi

They can only make it mandatory on a jobcentre Internet Access Device (IAD), not on your own home computer.

              Universal Jobmatch – Your Rights.

              Check this link out. http://refuted.org.uk/2014/03/26/jobmatchrights/

            • Jester McFail

It’s only mandatory to create a public cv and account on uj. They can’t force you to give permission to look at your account. Don’t let the bastards tell you otherwise check out refuted. They tried it on with me for about 2 months stand your ground untick the box that allows access, state the data protection act and give them everything in writing they CANNOT dictate how you provide your own jobsearch details.

      • Jobcentre staff are as antiquated as the TV licence… time for them to go!

  20. In the 1970s you used to be able to get leaflets about benefits at the Post Office and Jobcentres (or were they UBO;s and DHSS offices in those days). I preferred them to the benefits calculator. Instead of answering questions and eventually getting told what you’d get, you could find out what the rules were and what everyone got.
The benefits calculator lied to me: stupid thing presumably didn’t know its own rules. It never asked whether I had an occupational pension, and nowhere on the site was it explained that if your pension was more than £50 your CONTRBUTION-BASED jobsekers would be reduced.
Anyone else been misinformed by the benefits calculator? Bet the new commercial site is even more useless.
Bring back booklets with catchy names like DB33c. They rocked.

  21. This online benefits & grants one is till free though..

    http://www.turn2us.org.uk/default.aspx

  22. Just use ‘throw-away’ email addresses to get more than 2 quotes (if that’s how they restrict?) to stay anonymous (except from NSA/GCHQ ) – try one of the free and easy-to-use browser plugins at Trashmail.com – no affiliation. FWIW IYDKA – use the Tor Browser to stay anon.

  23. I use turn2us. The .gov calculator told me my child tax credit entitlement was zero when in fact I am awarded £2400 p.a. the turn2us calculator gave a correct figure with precisely same info inputted. If it smells like fish ?

  24. How long can coalition politicians get away with claiming that as soon as Universal Credit is rolled out (they usually say “soon”) all of the social evils like food banks and poverty will be banished overnight? The DWP has already introduced an impossibly severe sanctions regime countrywide ahead of Universal Credit, brought in the Claimant Commitment and what not, so we have all the bullying and evils associated with Universal Credit with none of the so-called benefits. How long can politicians keep saying that Universal Credit is being perfected and is on its way when we all bloody know that it isn’t? As far as I know there’s only some thousands of single people without children on Universal Credit in the pilot areas. I don’t think any couples or self-employed people have been used as guinea pigs yet. In the pilots a huge proportion of Universal Credit claimants have had terrible trouble budgeting their monies and many – many! – have fallen into arrears as far as their rents are concerned.

Surely Universal Credit isn’t ever going to happen?

    It’s fucked isn’t it?

  25. If you need more than two benefit calculations just create more free email addresses (and change your postcode if need be)

  26. JK said: The Benefit Calculator is a simple bit of programming which anybody could knock up given a good knowledge of the benefit system. Wouldn’t it be nice if somebody did this and put the fucker online for free?
Some people have. Just use ‘benefits calculator’ as a search term to see what I mean. Entitledto is right, if the word is followed by the phrase ‘free information’!

it is shit. It doesn’t ask if you are disabled and how many hours you could/not work or if you could hold down a job. Or ask any other costs of living. Housing benefit would go if in work. In other words in most cases if sick or disabled in particular you are actually much worse off than on benefits. A lot of things we’re ‘entitled to’ we don’t or won’t get. Doesn’t ask your financial commitments or take into account inflation, buying food, care costs, whatever. This week NHS wants to start charging the patients even skint ones for crutches, wheelchairs and so on. What do you do if you can’t pay at all? Get thrown in a corner to starve to death? Probably while also meant to be on daily signing plus zero hour contract jobs plus work related activity plus workfare plus wank programme.
    Think they resurrected Thatcher.

“Don’t lie there starving and moaning, get up and work! It’s your fault you didn’t get born rich or with powerful friends. Namby pamby luxuries like a stick or a wheelchair are not for you, you are a useless eater.”

Fuck it…. aren’t there some vengeance-demons we can unleash on the ‘government’?
