Occupy Wonga On May Day!

wrongavia DPAC

On May 1st 2014, get ready for some direct action, Occupy London are proud to present OCCUPY WONGA!

In 2011 the Occupy movement had a clear message “The bankers are the problem”. Now in 2014, we are on the edge of complete debt slavery.

Pay day loan companies are the new economic fascists, their “clients” include, victims of the Bedroom tax, Fuel Poverty, Benefit cuts, Atos and all people suffering from the Governments Austerity program. Companies like QuickQuid, the Money Shop and Wonga are not helping us, they are holding us in debt bondage further extending the widening gap between rich and poor.

We see the most vulnerable people in society being charged Immoral Interest rates, the very people the government should be protecting. If you feel that something should be done about Payday loans, join us in London on Mayday 2014.

Occupy London hereby call for a complete end to Pay day loans and an immediate stop to all pay day loan advertising. On Mayday we will be paying Wonga some interest, but not with 5853% APR.

May Day Itinerary:-
12:00 (High Noon) Assemble at Clerkenwell Green
13:00 March sets off
14:30 Rally in Trafalgar square in honour of Tony Benn and Bob Crow.
As soon as the rally has finished, we march.
When we arrive at the target we will occupy a space and hold a general assembly on site.

Supporting this action on the day will be:-
*Disabled People against Cuts (DPAC)
*Fuel Poverty Action
*The Resistance Movement Of The UK
*Class War

good on ’em, i feel nothing but utter disgust and contempt for these types of loans, that take advantage of poverty/savage cuts in benefits, i am not a fan of any type of loan or credit, although i can sometimes see the need, and pinch nose 1st…they drop one even deeper into dire mire….they do not, cannot form part of a civilized/humane culture and should be stopped…

  2. Wonga, part of the banking system in disguise.
If they cannot get you one way they will come up with all sorts of other products to keep the masses in debt.
    And hence control.

  3. Reblogged this on Beastrabban’s Weblog and commented:
This is good news – Wonga and the other pay day loan companies are usurers, pure and simple. They and the return of the pawnshop are both a symptom and a cause of the growing poverty in this country and the return of 19th century living conditions. They have been repeated criticised and action demanded to curb their usury by any number of authorities, organisations and groups, including the archbishop of Canterbury. It’s about time action was taken.

  4. does mike sivier on vox political have a problem with people disagreeing with him?

    • Yes. Quite reassuring to see you write that – I found the same the other week, when I posted a comment on his blog. I was pretty balanced in what I said, but my criticisms of Labour (I also criticised the Tories) ignited an unnecessarily heated, and frankly slightly offensive response from him.

      • Agree. many post have disappeared in recent days from what appear to be interesting articles. Doesn’t make sense especially as Labour have been absent for 3 years and give the impression, by supporting the Tories on stuff that they don’t want to win the next election. They are not providing the people with any alternative. i won’t be reading anymore of his material

    • Labour these days are pretty much the same beast as your Tory only with a less charismatic leader than Dave. For the jobless voting either will result in sanctions and mandatory work placements/community sentences. You can easily wind up old school Labour supporters though for a bit of sport comparing old union strong Labour to new spineless brigade. See them go go go.

    • Pig in Space

      Yes!

  5. The organisers of this clearly aren’t thinking clearly; wouldn’t it make FAR more SENSE to hold it on a weekday similar to the rail strikes? Holding the thing on a day when the capital is empty renders it all pointless. Do better..

  6. justanotherhomlesstramp

hope its worth it stockport and london are far apart saving up my giro!

  7. Credit Unions – these should be the future.

  8. Decent, liveable incomes or unemployment benefits, not credit, should be the future.
Free housing from the state too, instead of private landlords.

Why has the country especially the sick and unemployed, been suffering to help those with mortgages who could afford to get into debt?

    • Credit Unions are a better and more ethical way for banking. They don’t just offer credit. There are more and more of them setting up in answer to the horrors of pay day loans and the destruction of life that companies like Wonga are causing

So, yeah, we need jobs, decent pay, benefits that are compatible with life and credit unions.

Please don’t write them off because of their name, they are nothing like Wonga or the high street banks! 🙂

  9. Of Topic, To all, Have you see the video posted on the Resistance Movement as above? I feel sick to the stomach, Please let people know x

    • Inexcusable thuggery. Whatever they suspected him of carrying, he didn’t do anything to warrant treatment like that.

  10. Lucy, the girl/lady who filmed and constantly questioned the so called ‘Officer’ is a hero in my book. She did not give up the fight. I would have been arrested as I would not have been able to stand by and watch such cruel and sadistic treatment to a vulnerable man. That lady needs a medal.

    • She was brilliant, stayed calm, persistent, kept on asking the thug officer to stop assaulting the old chap. I think she is someone who has done such filming before. That’s a testimony to how crap this country has become isn’t it? People getting experienced in filming assaults by the police. We need a world where we don’t have to be ever vigilant, constantly recording, keeping evidence. The need to be alert to this, at every juncture of our lives is very oppressive.

I know what the credit union is I helped start up one where I live for loan parents when I was part of a community association.
It is the poor saving, while repaying loans themselves, to lend, at high risk, to the poor which the high street banks reject and is only small amounts.

It does not get them on the proper ladder. Debt is a dirty word which we all pay for in one way or another.

    • lone parents, not loan parents.

      • What the hell is going on with wordpress, I typed in property ladder and I get proper ladder??????

        • I know what you mean, we have inherited a lot of things intended for the poor. That kind of inheritance always has a bitter sting in the tail. But credit unions are expanding a bit, they are starting to offer mortgages or are planning to. I think they are safer to use than the banking system and more open about what they do and how they do it, they aren’t going to send the bailiffs around or further bugger up life for those who have borrowed from them, with epic, compounding interest either, which is a distinct advantage over scum like Wonga. Credit Unions aren’t perfect, but compared to Wonga, they are fairer and people are less likely to get into unmanageable debt because of them.

Cue: Pile on of people who have all had dreadful experiences with credit unions! I’d be interested to know if they have gone bad too. Long time since I had contact with one.

          • I think that credit unions do a great job, and in principle they are a great idea as they are largely democratic. However, the bigger they get and the more services they offer should be a cause for consideration. The more like mainstream banks they become the greater the risk that they might wish to move away from their mutual roots – just as most building societies became fully fledged banks in the 90s.

Whilst credit unions remain very local, operating in areas that have a ‘common bond’ it means that people do feel a great sense of ownership, but as the tendency to amalgamate and form bigger credit unions increases, then the feeling of local ownership becomes diluted, and the risks of people defaulting becomes greater. However, having said that, as far as I know the level of actual default remains very low.

People do need access to credit, and that would remain no matter what kind of economic system was in place, and credit unions, with all their faults are far better than loan sharks, of either the legal or illegal variety.

            • Sibrydionmawr

I thought you were, described by one joker as the voice of reason. How does credit benefit anyone except those that want to get us into debt?

Credit is subsidizing wages and allowing the state to palm people off onto credit unions (for the working class) with no bail out like for high street banks for default.

              Democratic Not!

It is making the poor, help the poor, while the bank robbers will only lend to the rich or students with the potential to become rich and then ask for bail outs from the state which we all pay for in one way or another, telling everyone that it was SUBPRIME lending that was the fault. Absolute codswallop.

A COMMON bond the working class do have, it does not include a stuck up wordsmith like you.

it was never never land, buy now pay later, put it on your plastic etc buy a house you can’t lose, except many can no longer even dream of such a thing, no jobs, poor pay, etc etc, as rents and renting soar, unfettered credit was/is used as an instrument of mass destruction..well here we all are, with nothing to spend coz it all went for profits before people…. http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jan/12/right-to-buy-housing-scandal

                • guy fawkes

Yes OBD, I watched the daily politics programme which is spouting rents are to increase, that means bedroom tax increases also as it is linked to rent rises.
All to increase house prices for those that have plenty of homes to sell other than the one they are living in.

  12. One wonders if that fat flying porker pig IDS is somehow connected to Wonga and all the other pay-day money lenders. I have to consider this as he is rather inventive on his CV.

I can’t see how a false CV would automatically land him the job running the DWP. If I attempt to use a fake CV to gain employment I would probably end up stuffed with a sanction for four weeks for purposely cocking up my chances of employability.

  13. Off-topic

With the latest Internet Explorer 11 virus / hack scare going on until Microsoft can fix the problem and that Windows XP is obselete, I’m hoping that all DWP computers crash and fail forcing them back to using the old-fashioned paper and pen filing system, used before all JCP’s went over to digital JSA / ESA filing and claims.

My JCP still uses Windows XP on its job points and all the computers used by the staff are using Windows Xp Professional. Might be lucky to walk in the office one day and all computers on site are infected with ransomware.

    • I fucking don’t; my job search via UG saves me shelling out on toner. And saves the environment eh?

      • ‘G O D’ didn’t clearly read my above earlier comment about the DWP going back to using paper and pen if their systems ever crash under ransomware. Get some glasses, you trolling fool.

“”HER MAJESTY’S COURTS AND TRIBUNALS SERVICE, FAIR , INDEPENDENT AND IMPARTIAL”………..

“FORGET IT MATE, IT;S JUST BULLSHIT!”

NOT ONLY WAS IT THOROUGHLY BIASED THAT I WAS EXPECTED TO APPEAR IN FRONT OF THE SAME JUDGE, DAVID WALL, WHO HAD STOLEN MY D.L.A. WEEKS EARLIER, BUT HE TRIED TO OVERRIDE MY REQUEST FOR A DIFFERENT MAGISTRATE……………

THERE ARE CERTAIN EXPECTATIONS LAID OUT IN LEGISLATION AND THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT SPECIFICALLY STATES EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO A “FAIR TRIAL”.

NOT MANY PEOPLE WILL BE AWARE OF THE WORD, “REPUSAL” AND IT’S IMPLICATIONS DURING A TRIAL OR TRIBUNAL.

SIMPLY PUT, REPUSAL MEANS THAT IF THERE IS SEEN TO BE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST WHERE A BIAS MAY BE EVIDENT, THE JUDGE CAN ELECT TO STAND DOWN OR THE APPELLANT MAY REQUEST IT……….

WHAT HAPPENED IN MY TRIBUNAL IS THAT JUDGE WALL AND HIS FEMALE DOCTOR, TOOK IT UPON THEMSELVES TO TRY TO PROCEED EVEN AFTER MY OBJECTIONS WERE RAISED………..

    MY OBJECTIONS WERE CLEAR…….

IN MY DISABILITY LIVING ALLOWANCE TRIBUNAL SOME WEEKS EARLIER I HAD MADE IT CLEAR THAT I WAS LIVING ON £32.32P AND HAD BEEN SINCE JULY OF LAST YEAR.

I HAD A PARTNER AND A SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD SON AND OUR DIETS WERE AFFECTED BY THE LOSS IN BENEFITS.

THE JUDGE WAS INFORMED THAT WE WERE PURCHASING OUT OF DATE FOOD, EATING STALE CREAMCRACKERS AND CUP A SOUP.

MY ABILITY TO MOBILISE HAD BEEN TAKEN AWAY AND MY SON HAD TO PAY, BOTH FOR HIS MEALS AND TRANSPORT TO SCHOOL.

NEVERTHELESS, THIS EVIL JUDGE UPHELD THAT THE REMOVAL OF MY DLA WAS FOUNDED BECAUASE I HAD FAILED TO FILL IN A 35 PAGE QUESTIONNAIRE.

STRANGELY IN A FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST TO THE DWP, THEY ADMITTED THAT IT WAS UNUSUAL FOR SOMEONE TO RECEIVE A QUESTIONNAIRE IF THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES HAD NOT CHANGED, AND THE CLAIMANT COULD INFORM THEM, IF IT HAD.

NATURALLY I INFORMED THEM MY CIRCUMSTANCES HAD NOT CHANGED, THEREFORE FULFILLING MY OBLIGATION.

WHILST IN THE COURT CHAMBER, I ASKED JUDGE WALL, IF THE TRIBUNAL PROCEEDINGS WERE BEING MONITORED, EITHER AUDIO, VIDEO OR BY A COURT STENOGRAPHER, HE REPLIED NO!

UPON ASKING HIM HOW A REPORT IS MADE BACK TO THE DWP, HE SAID I DO IT.

I PUT IT TO HIM THAT ANY REPORTS EMANATING FROM THE JUDICIAL CHAMBER WERE NEITHER FAIR, INDEPENDENT OR IMPARTIAL………..

NO WONDER IT STATES THAT YOU CAN BE IMPRISONED FOR MAKING A RECORDING OR FILMING A COURT PROCEDURE.

    TO PUT IT MILDLY;

“YOU ARE BEING SHAFTED AT EVERY LEVEL BY THE MOST BIASED, UNFAIR JUDICIAL ARRANGEMENT EVER TO BE DREAM’T UP”

SORRY, MY MISTAKE, THE WORD IS “RECUSAL”

      From: lotus

      5 March 2013

      Dear Ministry of Justice,

Please clarify the law on the recusal of judges.

If anyone in any court before any judge feels that there is bias or
apparent bias in the way the judge is conducting the proceedings,
they can ask the judge to recuse themselves or step down simply by
      saying

“I hereby make an oral application for you to recuse yourself on
grounds of your bias or apparent bias”

However, my understanding of the law on recusal or stepping down is
that the judge must immediately stop the proceedings and pass the
matter to a more senior colleague to continue the proceedings.

It is the feeling felt by the person requesting the recusal that
triggers the judge to step down and pass it to someone else.
However, judges who are bias are even more determined to continue
to the predetermined end-point and rarely step down which is
      contrary to the law.

It is clearly wrong for a judge to continue to preside given that
the application for recusal has been made and there is a risk any
decision will appear to be prejudiced by that application.

just had a letter from scarborough law courts that state, JUDGE DAVID WALL AND HIS FEMALE DOCTOR, WENT AHEAD WITH MY CASE, IN MY ABSENCE, AFTER I HAD LODGED A LENGTHY OBJECTION UNDER THE TERMS OF “RECUSAL”.

THEY HAVE UPHELD MY ESA REPORT FROM ATOS USED TO STEAL MY INCAPACITY BENEFITS.

WATCH THIS SPACE WHEN I TAKE ATOS TO COURT…………………..

  16. Does anyone have problems with parking, where I live neighbours and their friends are constantly playing musical cars with my parking area, leaving me with no place for my family to park their cars, some have 4 cars per household which makes it difficult for anyone delivering to my address.

    • I’ll come round tonight with a paintbrush and a pot of yellow paint, and paint double yellow lines outside your property’s access.

A more useful suggestion is to contact your local council to see what they can do or not do about people clogging up your parking space.

  17. Credit Unions the collectives shortcut into banking and the economic enslavement of the poor, the old Social Fund was better than the pretentious Credit Unions.

    • The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. IDS must be laughing his fat, hairy ass off what with his huge pay cheque earned for what can only be described as mass slavery and destitution against us all.

    • I believe the social fund awarded grants to the sick, unemployed etc., not loans or directions to a credit union as this government and the last have done.

  18. I guess the national tv news won’t bother covering anything that happens today. It will be like nothing has happened but at least it’s a form of fighting back and all we can do is try to get our thoughts over to the people who have all the influence and power. Not that they care though.

    DWP LYING. SURELY NOT?

    Dear Ms Conner,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request which we received on 28 March 2014.

    You asked:
    QUESTION
What is the exact date that ATOS will cease their contract in regards the assessment of
    claimants for work capability assessments.
How much are they paying back to the DWP in regards to the cancellation of the contract.

    ANSWER
An exact date for the cessation of Atos’ contract with the department for the provision of Work
Capability Assessments will be set in due course.

In reply to point 2, I can confirm that the Department holds the information you are seeking.
However, the information you have requested is exempt from release under Sections 41 and 43
of the Freedom of Information Act. Section 41 exempts information which, if disclosed, would
constitute an actionable breach of confidence against the Department.

Section 43 exempts information which, if disclosed, would be likely to prejudice the commercial
interests of any person. It protects not only the commercial interests of third parties but also the
commercial interests of the Department. As required by the FoI Act the use of the exemption in
Section 43 requires the public interest for and against disclosure to be assessed. On balance I
am satisfied that, in this instance, the public interest in applying the exemption outweighs the
    public interest in disclosure.
If you have any queries about this letter please contact me quoting the reference number above.
    Yours sincerely

“the rules are yet to be written”

    25 March 2014
    Annex A

    Dear Stephanie Herne,

    Thank you for your Freedom of Information request received 11th March 2014. You asked;
that we provide all guidelines and any other relevant information regarding the Help to Work
scheme which commences in April 2014 at Jobcentres for Work Programme completers.

    answer/
I am unable to provide you with this information at this point in time as I believe that it falls
within exemption 35 of the Freedom of Information Act. This exemption relates to the
formulation of government policy. I consider that the exemption applies because it is intended
to protect the space within which government can think and develop its policies without
prejudice. I maintain that the information you seek falls into this category.

As required by the Act, I have also considered whether the balance of the public interest
comes down in favour of not complying with your request. I consider that there is no
overarching public interest argument in favour of releasing this information for the following
    reason(s):

The Act acknowledges that good government depends on good decision making and therefore
needs space in which to formulate policies based on the best advice available with full
consideration of all the options. Ministers also need to be able to conduct rigorous and candid
risk assessments of their policies and programmes including considerations of the pros and
cons without there being premature disclosure which might close off other, better options.
The Help to Work operational guidance is in the testing phase of development. The support
through Help to Work is due to start on 28th April 2014, at which point the guidance will be
    available.
If you have any queries about this letter please contact me quoting the reference number
    above.
    Yours sincerely,

    DWP Central FoI Team
