Save Lewisham Hospital!

Hospitals under threat, Tories split on Europe, the nastiest sleaze yet bubbling away under the surface – this Government is already starting to look very familiar.

There’s a meeting being held tonight (Thursday 8th Nov) at 6pm to start the fightback against the planned closure of Lewisham’s Accdent and Emergency unit.  More details from:

“A government appointed technocrat (Trust Special Administrator) has recommended closing Lewisham’s children’s wards, critical care unit and emergency surgery to pay massive debts at neighbouring hospitals. He wants to shut Lewisham Hospital A&E and replace it with a non-admitting Urgent Care Centre. Maternity services could be lost too, and half the hospital sold for £17million. He has also proposed a decimation of services throughout South East London, with massive job losses, privatisation and sell-offs.

The Save Lewisham A&E Campaign is now officially underway. There’s a Public Meeting on Thursday, 8th November, 6-8pm in Lessoff Auditorium at the Hosptial (Speakers: Jim Dowd MP, Heidi Alexander MP, Mayor Steve Bullock, Dr Louise Irvine, local GP and BMA council member and others).

A demonstration ‘Hands Around Our Hospital’ is planned for Saturday 24th November: 2pm, march from Loampit Vale roundabout to Lewisham Hospital, 3pm, link hands around Lewisham Hospital. Be there.”

  2. We Are All Truly Fucked Now!

Yes indeed : the Tory govt. enabled and abetted by the poodle Clegg and his twisted followers. Sleaze, corruption, financial rape, and now killing the poor for fun and profit. That’s The Torie⚡⚡ for ya!

  3. We Are All Truly Fucked Now!

A great post from the previous thread which I will keep reposting until it becomes reality:
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? . . .”

  4. Re: Lewisham Hospital Closure Threat:

This will be an absolute travesty for South East London as this is now the only main hospital/A&E Dept left for the area.
I relied on Lewisham Hospital for most of my life, literally, being born there over 47 years ago and also giving birth to both of my children there too, and then of course going thro life and the general accidents and scraps that incur, both myself and my children. It was always a comfort to know that within a few miles and a short car/ambulance drive, professional help was at hand.

I no longer live in the area having moved to West Midlands a few years ago, but that does not stop me feeling passionate about this and I urge, even beg, the powers that be….. PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE THIS VITAL SERVICE THAT SOUTH EAST LONDON RELY ON SO HEAVILY, YOU WILL PROBABLY END UP SAVING COUNTLESS LIVES IN DOING SO.

    Many thanks,

    Patricia C

  5. Universal access to high-quality care is essential for the effective control of a disease such as TB. A government that chooses to unpick the net of social protection, as the current coalition is doing, will damage one of the most important defences we have against epidemic disease. — • Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet at

First they came for Lewisham ….

    • Anyone know how this googling works? In looking for articles on this story i came across other bits of text that doesnt appear ib the blogs.. Eg ‘anarchists’ ‘socialists’ ‘radicals’ etc not sure how it gets there. Any ideas? All a bit weird.
