The total number of claimants claiming out of work sickness or disability benefits rose by 15,000 between March and April provisional DWP statistics report.
2.485 million people were claiming Employment Support Allowance or Incapacity Benefit in April, representing a steady rise of 1.2% since November 2013. This comes despite the horrific Atos regime which has seen hundreds of thousands of claimants being stripped of benefits after being assessed as ‘fit for work’. The number of people on out of work sickness benefits should be plummeting, and it was until just over a year ago.
It is hardly surprising that people are still becoming ill or disabled despite the magical Atos assessments. The UK did not have significantly more people on out of work sickness or disability benefits than other comparable countries even before the despised Work Capability Assessment began. It is unusual however that the number of people unable to work for health reasons should be rising at a time when unemployment is allegedly falling.
There is growing evidence that Iain Duncan Smith’s welfare reforms are damaging people’s health. Some parts of the UK have reported soaring malnutrition linked to benefit cuts. A report produced by Citizen’s Advice last year told of people being unable to meet special dietary needs due to sanctions or having to beg or go through bins to find food. Homelessness charities have said that sanctions are causing people to lose their homes. And a damning report by the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland claimed that 35% of psychiatrists said at least one of their patients had been admitted to hospital as a consequence of the stress of Atos assessments.
Using hunger and homelessness as a weapon against benefit claimants will not incentivise people to find work, it will demolish lives. Forcing people with mental health conditions into stressful and demeaning assessments under the threat of destitution will not magically cure them of their condition – in many cases it will make it worse. Iain Duncan Smith really is making us sick, and with more workfare and sanctions on the way then things are only going to get worse.

Yes, IDS is making us ill. I’ve been on medication for the past 2 years as a direct result of DWP bullying tactics. And I still can’t even get a sick note.

Actually Geoff that’s complete shite sir; those that mistreat animals/pets in the UK are often given little more than a slap on the wrist or a fine at most due to political correctness protecting the criminal’s human rights. If however you had said criminals are treated better than the jobless and/or disabled you’d be spot on. In most cases a criminal record will mean you stand more chance of getting a job or at least less chance of being sanctioned. I rather agree with Void’s view, but would still be interested to know how a 1.2% change over 8 months compares, generally, to fluctuations in the figures. For context.
The figures were falling month on month pretty much since the introduction of the Atos assessments. 1.2% is would not be huge and could be down to fluctuation normally, however the number should be plummeting due to so many people losing benefits due to the WCA which was supposed to take over a million people off sickness/disability benefits. It appears that no matter how fast Atos are declaring people fit for work, new claimants are coming into the system. There were also lots of people in long term unemployment benefits who probably should have been on the sick, undiagnosed mental health conditions for example. Often this group didn’t want to go on the sick as they considered it giving up. It’s likely the conditionality for the dole has become too much for a lot of these people and they’ve gone onto ESA.
Absolutely right Johnny, figures should be plummeting at an alarming rate but the system has gone into reverse thrust.
The action has caused an equal and opposite reaction that the plebs never thought to factor into their ill thought out policies. Hopefully we might see the botched system in meltdown, rather like the fiasco of universal credit and the passport office………
Another factor is that people with either disability or mental problems were frightened to report a change of circumstances about their conditions for fear of being persecuted further and having their existing benefits stopped after being sent to ATOS.
The fear, misery and total discontent at what has been thrown at them has exacerbated the crisis, somewhat like throwing petrol on a bonfire.

I have told JC advisors that by forcing everyone onto UJM they’re just eliminating themselves, and asked supermarket staff what it’s like making yourself unemployed – while they’re teaching customers how to use the automated checkouts. I also watched questiontime last night and the audience did clap the odd comment by ids. Although I don’t like him as most of us who visit this website , the majority of people don’t experience the hardship and bullying from jobcentre and work programme staff as we have so they just see ids as a hardened politician.
They might think of him as being a bit of a fool but they have no idea what hardship his policies have put decent, honest people through.
It’s unlikely UKIP will win a single seat at the next election so it’s still a conservative or labour choice. At least the community work for benefits has not yet been forced on us.
