Talking About Cannabis: The Racket Continues

October 28, 2009 · 11 Comments

Some people just won’t stay dead.

We were happy to leave Debra Bell of the one woman organisation Talking About Cannabis to drift into well deserved obscurity.

After a well publicised split with school teacher Mary Brett we’d hoped that her incessant ego and dishonest diatribe might have quietened down.  Alas it was not to be.

Debra finally got a book published, which is due for release next year.  Desperate to wring every last penny from her son’s personal problems she’s been signed up by Hammersmith Press, a flaky operation who claim to be medical publishers but run a sideline in unscientific drivel.  Which we suppose should suit Debra rather well.

Not content with that, but Debra is now offering consultations to families of problem drug users. For a mere hundred quid (you heard that right) you can have a “coaching, support and information session” from an untrained, unqualified nutjob.

What’s more, her son William is now looking to cash in as well.  William Bell is offering telephone consultations, once again for a cool hundred quid.

Now we’d always felt a bit sorry for poor old William.  Having his personal life splashed over the newspapers in furtherance of his mother’s desperate attempt to carve out a career for herself cannot have been pleasant.

But our sympathy has faded.  Basically a kid who smoked a few spliffs (and the rest) charging vulnerable families a hundred quid for a fucking phone call is pure shysterism.

Which is why we’ve decided to reveal that William Bell is in fact Oliver Woodbridge. He’s got a facebook page and everything, where he lists his interests as “sleeping, smoking, singing, playin football, bein tall (an effort btw), sexing, hexing, vexing,”.

Here’s a picture of him, he’s the one on the left next to the bloke with a spliff in his hand.

Could you expand on the William-is-Oliver part?

I can’t afford a hundred quid to ask Debbie.

Debra’s been using a pseudonym, although fuck knows why when she gives away enough to make it perfectly obvious who he is to anyone who knows him

Her son’s real name is Oliver Woodbridge and that’s his facebook page linked.

And given that he’s already appeared on gmtv and he’s now attempting to charge people for consultations on behalf of an anti-cannabis organisation then i would say its in the public interest that he has pictures on his facebook profile of him in the same frame as people who appear to be holding spliffs

Is her real name “Debra” Woodbridge?

    Ha ha!

Doesn’t David “Claude” Raynes advise Debs?

I believe david raynes and debra have had a little fall out.

Yes, Debra Woodbridge is her real name, should have mentioned that

As for the criminal lawyer hubby, well it’s probably not in the public interest to name him, although a quick scan of TAC’s petition may prove fruitful :)

they really ain’t the sharpest tools the Woodbridges

Debra Bell’s real name may well be Woodbridge but she is not married to an “eminent criminal barrister”. The only barrister of that name in the Bar Council directory is a woman.

I also checked solicitors (just in case). There is only one male solicitor of that name on the Law Society list as registered to practice in England and Wales, and he has an exclusively civil practice.

A Benjamin Jack Woodbridge appears as a signatory to the petition on Debra’s website, but neither of those forenames belong to the solicitor mentioned above.

I suspect Benjamin Jack is Debra’s husband but he’s not a criminal lawyer -of any sort.

Benjamin jack is not Debras husband, her husband is a lawyer, check the petition linked above if you want a clue (the clue being he’s the only person on there called woodbridge but not debra)

then google him and youll find a pic and everything

OK, but Julian isn’t the only other Woodbridge on the petition. There’s also a Benjamin Jack Woodbridge. I’m afraid I didn’t look down any further when I hit that one. So who’s Benjamin Jack? One of her other sons, maybe?

I’ve googled him as you suggest and you’re right. But Julian W. still doesn’t show up on the Bar Council list, which is odd (he turns out to be a barrister, not a solicitor). What I said above included all those called Woodbridge on both the Bar Council (barristers) and Law Society (solicitors) lists.

I’m afraid that none of this convinces me.

I certainly think Debra is hypocritically cashing in on her son’s illness by charging a hundred quid for a consultation and that she’s blaming cannabis for what could well be genetics (she admitted on BBC News a while back that her or her partner’s brother had schizophrenia).

JV, could you post links to prove your case, please?

I will then attempt to disprove them and if I can’t I’ll agree with you.

Have you read Mad Mel’s rant in today’s Daily Mail?

john, no offence, but i dont have the time or inclination to reveal sources and thoroughly outline how i came to this information which was already common knowledge to many of us and first revealed in a comment on the ukcia blog

although they didnt have the william/oliver wannabe gangster spliff money shot :)

the woodbridges are perfectly welcome to sue me if im incorrect

    OK, JV, no problem.

If I get time, I’ll track down the UKCIA blog entry.

I’m more interested in the Nutt saga now anyway.

    Cheers, John.
